"DCL Klondike Kruisers" - August 23, 2011 PART 2

I have spent hours tonight looking again. I am really liking the idea of driving ourselves. In Ketchikan I read where people rent a car and dibe to Emerald lake and the Yukon. The picture are awesome. They say you can stop along the roadside and see wildlife up close as well.

I have am in the process of finding "must see/do" items at each port.

I would like to see the salmon going up stream and possibly have a samlon meal. I found a couple local brewerys and thought I might try that. I do not drink or like beer, but I am always willing to try the local spirits to see if I find something I like.

We have decided to do it ourselves. We are either going to do private or rent a vehicle and be part of Alaska. I priced out so much stuff last night and mapped it (actually till 2a.m. this morning).

What I want to know is if anyone out there that has been to Alaska has a recommendation for "Have to see/do this"

We have children from 2 to 15 to incorporate in our planning as well.

Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau is easy to do on your own. I read alot on CruiseCritic about the Ports before we went in 2008. There is a blue bus that you can get fairly inexpensively out to the Mendenhall Glacier. Then walk around on your own. There is a nominal fee to see the exhibits in the nature house. There are naturalist around giving little talks and such. We really enjoyed our day. Once back in the city, we walked around for a bit before heading back to the shp.

In Skagway, you can see the salmon. There is a stream real close to the Port. You have to cross it to get into town. Lots of salmon, when we went in August 2008. I have some pics, but they are on the other harddrive. I'll see if I get at them tomorrow and post a few.

I have been reading Cruise Critic for the past few nights as well. Thank you for the information thus far. If you find pics and want to share, I would love to see them.

Yes, very expensive. But luckily we are only 2! We booked the whale watching on our own. We are also doing the white pass and bike ride which is way $$ but we are going to do it any way. Dh wants to do the lumberjack so that is not a bad one. We had to put 1/2 down on the whale watching so that was paid for already and we paid our hotel ahead of time to get a cheaper rate. Cheap is my middle name:rotfl: but I love vacationing so it's not as painful as say gas right now!!!!!

Other than you and Roger and Nancy and me do you know of any others doing the Whale Watch and Mendenhaul Glaicer?
I think I would like to do the Lumber jack also I enjoy watching it on ESPN.
We will see.
Nancy would like to go to the Botanical Gardens in Vancouver and Juneau.
We have been told by our next door neighbor who went to Alaska this past OCT don't miss it.

Julie & her friend are on the same boat as us. Other than that I don't think so.

The local drink is called a............. duck fart!

Sorry I have been MIA lately.

Just returned from the 4/17 Dream sailing and 3 nights at Kidani at AKL with wonderful friends we made in the Med. Had a amazing time but now it is time to shift focus to Alaska. Time to figure out excursions and figure out what we need in terms of clothes and such. Platinum members and concierge have fun booking tonight or tomorrow.:)

Yep, it's official......we're out. I just couldn't get our flight arrangements to work out.

So sad...was really looking forward to seeing Alaska. I rebooked for next Aug (2012), just for the heck of it.....we'll see what happens.

Anyway, everyone have a great cruise...can't wait to hear all about it! Have fun!

Sorry to see you leave, but I hope that you have fun on your cruise in Aug. 2012 I hope that you are able to see Alaska. I will take you off the FE list for this cruise. I just noticed that you joined the same cruise that we are on next April 2012 on the Dream. :thumbsup2 Let me know if you want to play FE on that cruise as I am keeping a list.

I look forward to getting to know you on our April cruise.

Vicki

Hi,

Anyone that is playing FE, please make sure I have your info correct on post 2. If I do not, please let me know, so that I can make corrections.

Thanks,

Vicki

5 months from today we set sail!!!!!!!!!:goodvibes:woohoo:

our info is correct. As we are 4 in a 6A GTY it could be a long time before we get a cabin assignment.

Thanks for the info, I don't think either will get themselves into trouble on their own, and actually not too worried about DS. Probably will not give DD signout privileges as she may get herself lost, not as good of a navigator as DS, but DD is only 11.

Anyone else with older kids on the edge of either kids club? What will you do?

Not sure at all what we'll do on that score yet!

For those of you that live in Washington or Canada. How do you think the border crossing will be the morning of the cruise. We will be staying in Bellingham and are hoping to leave sometime in the morning for Vancouver.

Vicki

Tough to say. It's a weekday morning but there are commuters. With the new passes, those folks should fly through though. I don't think we are planning for anything worse than normal. Typically going IN to Canada is a breeze, it's coming back that takes forever.

We are debating parking near the cruise terminal versus perhaps doing a long term parking at the light rail, maybe in Richmond, and riding in from there. We will see. Lots of time to figure that part out. We did Amtrak last November so will probably drive this time, depending on the parking options.

On the cruise board that is the week before ours, people have priced out certain excursions directly vs going through Disney. Some look cheaper, other's don't. My sadness is that I was not able to find the comparable independent tours that we want to do. We have five of us and what really peeves me is that for Disney, I have to pay adult prices for my 11 and 13 year olds! Whatever, I've had to pay adult prices for the dining plan at Disney since they were 10, so I guess I'm used to "taking it"!

Anyhow, I would love to see if others have found better prices. We are specifically looking for cheaper than $176 for the klondike gold dredge/whitepass railway in Skagway; $199 for the best of Juneau; and $(ouch) 359 for the Misty Fjords and floatplane adventure in Ketchikan. (I did see a floatplane, but it did not include what Disney's did)

I'd love to see what folks find. I've not found anything comparable for what we are looking at for enough less for me to feel comfortable. I'd rather not prepay and be out entirely if there is some odd delay or whatever unless it's a rather substantial savings. We are still quite a ways away from excursion booking but it's a huge chunk of change for what we want to do so...we will see.

I have the same peeve. Both with the DDP and the excursions! And then the kicker is depsite adult prices, neither way enough to zipline!

For those staying at cheap Seattle Airport Motels...be careful, there is some icky icky stuff out there. Some perfectly ok things too but...just sayin'

If the plan is to drive (versus Amtrak) people might be better off heading north and doing like an Embassy Suite or Hampton Inn, just north of the city for a decent rate and early start with no airport ick and nice and close to the highway (while missing that morning commute traffic!). For Amtrak folks, either downtown or Airport would be best.

Part of me is bummed about the Seattle departure but I don't want to wait another year and frankly, sailing between Seattle and Vancouver is of no interest, I've done that lots on a variety of boats so we feel our time is better spent out of Vancouver. Or at least I justify not waiting a year by telling myself that!

We're all done. Excursions booked, documents finished, spa treatments and Palo ressies made...now just to figure out what to bring...

That is such a nice picture - we miss you guys! (As you can probably tell from the fact that I keep stalking the meet thread for a cruise I won't be on :lmao:).
Is any of you thinking about sailing to Canada out of New York? We just booked for September 2, 2012! Would love it if you came along ...

I think we've decided to drive up and park long term parking at the airport and take the skytrain to the port. Post cruise, we'll be at the Fairmont airport, so it kind of works out.

Let me vehemently second that.

Where exactly are you in the PNW?
