I was wondering more about the internet on the ships, particularly the Dream.
I keep seeing all kinds of posts on WiFi, but if I bring my laptop, am I forced to use WiFi or can I hardwire in somewhere?
Obvious preference would be to hardwire into the net from the stateroom, but is this even an option?

No hardwire. Only Wifi.

None anywhere.

O well, haha, I'll have to go wireless

Thanks for the quick reply!

If you are concerned about working on a wireless (unsecure) connection, you can use your internet plan at the ship's internet cafe on one of their hard wired computers. We were not able to use a VPN on DCL's connection, so we used the hard wired connection most of the time for work related stuff.

I don't believe the Dream has an actual internet café (like the Wonder and Magic do). You must use your laptop or one of the laptops borrowed from Guest Services.

I'll put the disclaimer that I'm not absolutely sure that the Magic still has the internet café with hardwired computers since her re-imagining, but I know the Wonder still had them a couple of years ago.

Yes, we got off the Wonder just shy of a month ago. :)

How much is the internet package?

The internet packages start at $19 for 100MB and go up to $89 for 1000MB. All shared by the same room.

I think you'll find their service is really nice, a great improvement over the old by-the-minute program. That was awful, especially since the internet service should be glacially slow at time. Paying the the MB makes it so easy to control. They have a meter that displays how much you've used every time you log on, it is VERY easy to use and crystal clear information. They also send you warning messages as you use up your package.

On the Fantasy (and I presume on other ships) recently there was an internet service desk, manned by a really nice and knowledgeable advisor. He knew exactly how to turn off thing that used MBs on phones and tablets (such as background app refresh or photo uploads).

For us, the previous internet service was a sore point. Today we really enjoy using the service.

A final note...even though you pay by the MB, so the connection speed doesn't affect your cost, it is more fun when the internet speed is faster than when it's slow. There are times of day, weather, and sea conditions that affect it. My advice: just ask any crew member. They use internet a lot in the crew area, and know when the conditions are right for faster service. I've found their advice to be spot on several times. Plus we love any chance to interact with the crew!

Some thoughts...
  • I got 24Mbps on the Wonder in Alaska.... those 1gb plans won't last long in my hands.
  • make sure your virus signatures and windows patches are up to date prior to leaving home and/or hotel to minimize data activity when on the ship
  • Don't forget the free 50mb for signing up the first day.
  • At some terminals... the wifi range also works off the ship. In Vancouver, you can sign up for the wifi while stuck in the terminal waiting to board. Good opportunity to check out the Navigator.

I haven't cruised Disney in years, but there used to be a hardwire plug on the phones in the staterooms. Is that no longer the case on the Magic and Wonder? I guess they could have built the new ships without. Guess a ship is different than a hotel room in that respect. I stayed at a brand new just opened Holiday Inn Express this week, and the Guest book mentioned (and I saw) that there are hardwired hookups for internet.....the book said "for travelers who work for the Government or other employers that forbid the use of WiFi on employer used devices".

Just off the Magic last week, they still have an internet café next to the Promenade Lounge.
