DCL Employee interesting facts

We were wondering how the tips worked too. We went for breakfast and lunch in the dining room and didn't get our server. So how do they get tips for that or is just part of their other tip they get? We felt funny not leaving them a tip.

I found out, from talking with our stateroom host, that they have to share their tips with the people who work in the laundry and one other place ( that I can't remember right now) so they are not pocketing the entire amount that is recommended and added to our shipboard accounts. What they can keep 100% of is anything that you give them in cash above and beyond the recommended tip amount.

I'm not sure this is correct. I've never seen it reported that the room hosts share their tips. I know on other cruiselines that have auto-gratuities (that typically cannot be removed) they are share with the behind the scenes people. But it's always been said that the tips on Disney go directly, and wholly, to the person indicated on the tip coupons.

Can anyone else confirm that the tips are shared?

I know this isn't exactly the same, but I'm a specialty nurse in Canada and I've done a few 3 month contracts through travel nursing companies in the States where they have shortages in certain areas. (At the time the US dollar was worth about 1.5 times the Cdn so they pay was really good.) Working a contract away from home is definitely a different mindset. I worked the same number of hours as the rest of the nurses, but I had to work every weekend and a lot more evenings and nights, but I also tried to pick up as many extra shifts as I could. Why not? I didn't know anyone there and had a small, boring apartment to live in. I reaped the benefits when I went home with a big wad of money in my pocket.

The tips that you give for "dinner" cover all meals onboard. Even though you didn't have "your" server for breakfast or lunch, that server is someone else's dinner server and they get their tips that way.

Likewise your server is most likely serving someone else during breakfast and lunch.

PrincessShmoo has it, but left off one important part:
If you have a breakfast or lunch server who is really awesome, it's definitely appropriate to mention that person on your comment card. Those go in their files and help toward rewards, time off and promotions.

The hosts and servers definitely do not share their tips. Room service & bartenders do pool tips, however.

When I worked for a small ships cruise line, most of our employees not only did all meal services, but they also cleaned the cabins as well. They would work 10-15 hour days for 4-6 weeks straight, with 2 or 3 weeks off. Most of the folks that were hired were young, with no children, so it was fun for them to be able to see parts of the world they wouldn't normally get to see. The employees with families definitely had a harder time and didn't last. But there was a HUGE turnover for crew for sure, because of the long hours and time away from home. But it's free room and board for a long period of time, along with meals as well. So, it can't be all bad. :)
