NOTE: This thread has been edited to reflect a change in dress code on the 7-NIGHT CRUISES ONLY. On those sailings, the suggested dress follows the dining theme for the evening. ALL restaurants follow the suggested dress for that evening, so the previous request for jackets in Lumiere's does NOT apply unless you happen to be dining in that restaurant on formal or semi-formal night. On all other nights the dress in Lumiere's is casual.

In response to requests from several posters we have put together this post to answer the questions most often asked about dress on the ships.

FOR ADULTS AND TEENS 13 AND OLDER

What should I pack?
In short, the less the better. The Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line offer a casual, informal resort atmosphere. During the summer months, lightweight shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans, and tops are all appropriate daytime attire in The Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Central Florida. In the winter, a light jacket, sweater, and socks may be needed for cooler days and nights. Bring comfortable shoes -- like boatshoes, sandals, or sneakers. And don't forget swimwear, sunglasses, a sunhat or visor, and sunscreen - especially for the kids.

Shipboard evening attire for the Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay dining rooms is casual. Button-down, open-collar shirts or polo shirts and slacks are recommended for men. Pants and a blouse or a casual dress are appropriate for ladies. For Triton's on the Wonder and our adults-only alternative dinner restaurant, Palo, it is suggested that men wear jackets and ladies wear dresses or pantsuits. We kindly request that no shorts, T-shirts, or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening.

Aboard the 7-Night Caribbean Cruise there are two evening dinners that require more formal, or "black-tie-optional", attire. Tuxedo rentals are available in advance for these special dinners.

For those Guests sailing on our 7-Night Cruise, we will celebrate the spirit of The Islands with a special deck party. You are invited to join in the fun by wearing festive island wear including colorful shirts, dresses, shorts, or pants. (NOTE: And yes, you CAN wear shorts to dinner on Tropical Night).

What should I wear to dinner?
The attire in Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay is resort casual -- open-collar shirts and slacks for men and pants and a blouse or a casual dress for ladies. In Triton's and Palo, we suggest men wear jackets and ladies wear dresses or pantsuits. We kindly request that no shorts, T-shirts or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening. We also request that swimsuits not be worn in any dining location. However, if you prefer to dine in shorts or comfy jeans, along with your favorite T-shirt, you'll want to try Pluto's Doghouse or Pinocchio's Pizzeria. If you are sailing on the Disney Magic®, you can take advantage of the relaxed dress code at Topsider Buffet. Of course, there's always room service. Or on special occasions, dress up in your colorful island attire, including flowered shirts and muu muus at the themed TROPICALIfragilistic-expialidocious Dinner. During the 7-Night Caribbean Cruise, appropriate attire is also suggested for our elegant and semi-formal evenings when dining with the Master Chef Series and the Captain's Gala Dinner. Tuxedo rentals are available in advance.

FOR CHILDREN UNDER AGE 13

Are children expected to follow the same dress code as adults?
Each parent or guardian would be the best judge of what attire is appropriate for our youngest cruisers. Guests who are age 13 or older would probably be most comfortable wearing attire similar to what is recommended above for all the ship's passengers.

SUGGESTED DRESS FOR PALO DAYTIME EVENTS
The suggested dress for BRUNCH and HIGH TEA on the 7-night cruise is RESORT CASUAL, with NO SHORTS requested. Ladies generally wear sundresses or casual pants, gentlemen wear casual pants and polo-type shirts.

DAYTIME ATTIRE IN OTHER RESTAURANTS
Beachwear and a cover-up are fine in the buffets, Topsider's and Beach Blanket Buffet. Shorts and other casual wear are fine for the inside dining locations for breakfast and lunch, Parrot Cay and Triton's/Lumiere's.

Hope this helps to eliminate some of the confusion. :)

I, for one, had no problems understanding all of this info when it was sent to me pre-cruise. I can't imagne anyone that can understand all of the other info in cruise documents would have a problem with understanding the dress guidelines. I just don't understand why they go to such lengths to provide this info when they apparently do not enforce their own rules. I think this is why folks get confused. They read what they are "supposed" to wear, yet sit next to folks in shorts and tank tops at dinner. I think most folks go to great lengths to make sure they pack the right things, and it really irks me that some just totally ignore it. It's almost insulting. It's not a matter of money I don't think. Disney Cruises are not cheap so you'd figure the ones with enough means to afford a cruise do have appropriate clothing. I'm not snotty and talking about "name" or "designer" clothing, just something that meetst the rules. I don't know many restaurants in my hometown that even allow tank tops.

Not a snob, but I do obey the rules! Maybe it's too much for me to expect the same from others!!!

Thanks, This answered a lot of my questions. Keep up the good work Michelle.

Thank you! I think everyone is right. I am a first time cruiser and even though Disney makes it clear to what to wear, there is still much confusion. I have read many message boards where people that have already been say not to bring what Disney tells you. It is confusing, but I will feel better if I bring what they tell me! Your information helped very much!

I just got back from my cruise. I didn't see anyone wearing coats at Lumieres. Even at Palos some people didn't wear a jacket. It is very relaxed.

Bobby - There are major differences between the host's (DCL's) requested attire recommendations and what you may see guests wearing. Some people abide by the dress code, some don't. Even on my first DCL cruise, which was a 3-day, I was surprised to see a few couples in EXTREMELY formal attire - evening gowns and tuxes - for Palo. Such formal attire was not required, but it fit the elegant atmosphere and I'm sure they enjoyed dressing up.

Michelle posted this at the prompting of some of us to let everyone know DCL's Dress Code. It is not meant to suggest what people can get by with, but what is requested by the host (DCL). There have been and probably always will be debates on what to wear, but her posting is the "official" word from DCL.

Since this thread is for informational purposes only I am going to go ahead and lock it. Questions or comments regarding the dress code can be started on different threads. Thanks.
