I'm sorry, but I am going to post this in another forum as well. Not sure this is exactly the place to pose this question....buuuut.

With Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the 500 yesterday, and my 9 year old son being a HUGE fan, AND our planned trip to Disney (Orlando) in October, does anyone have any input on how we might be able to get from PORT Orleans to DAYTONA USA so my son can see JR's car?

We are using the Magic Express service from the airport to the resort, so we won't have a rental.

Has anyone done this? I understand the ride is more than an hour. Do taxis run that far? I'm a country boy, no taxis where I live. Is it a better idea to rent a car for the day? I have no idea how I would get to and from rental place since we are staying at resort and don't have a means to travel around Orlando.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

First the bad news....Daytona USA closed several years ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytona_500_Experience

Now for the good news.....You can go to the track and take one of the tours. We did the short tour a couple years ago and you get to see the car of the current winner on display. The tour was fun and I'm not a big Nascar fan. They take your group picture in Winners circle and again in the room with the car, but I can't remember the backdrop for that one. All in all with the tour and shopping we spent about 4 hours at the track.

Personally, I would rent a car, go to the track, head over the bridge, and drive on the beach. If you go farther South on A1A there is a lighthouse and museum at Ponce Inlet. You can go up into the lighthouse and see for miles and miles. Only costs about $5 for the Lighthouse park.
