There is another thread where we started talking about how heavy those daybags get (especially if you bring on a 24 pack of coke and your own rum!). Our experience was that our daybags were a real pain to carry around from the time we boarded (at noon) until 1:30 when our rooms were available.
Next time:
I won't carry my books in my daybag - I'm not reading them for that time anyway and they can go in my luggage.
I'm having the kids wear their suits and packing a change of dinner clothes (just in case the luggage doesn't get to the stateroom by dinner). We had them wear shorts, change into suits that I was hauling, plus I had dinner clothes packed.
I'd just wear casual capri's to board. Worse comes to worse, I can wear them in the dining room. I brought my swimsuit - but the kids were in the Mickey Pool, so I didn't need to be wearing it.
Put sunscreen on everyone before we check our luggage at the terminal and throw that in the checked luggage as well (every little bit of weight helps).
I will:
Still carryon my documents - in my purse with my credit card, passport etc.
Still carryon my camera
Still carryon personal electronics (in this case a portable DVD player we use for the plane trip)
Still bring a change of clothes for the kids (they'd wear their suits onboard, but I'm in dinner ready capris if my luggage is delayed).
Still haul a few snacks. The kids had granola bars hanging out in the terminal. But the majority of snacks would go in the checked luggage.
Skip hauling a bottle of water. There is a drinking fountain at the terminal that will do for the short amount of time it takes to board - and plenty of water on board.
If I have any prescription meds, I'll carry those on as well. As well as valuables, breakables and cash. (Not anticpating much of any of this - well except we carry on tip money in cash).
