Day 1 On route to WDW
Left home at 8.50am for journey to Glasgow airport. No traffic problems and we arrived at the airport at 9.30am. Went into departures. Checked the screen to see what check in desk we had to go to. HURRAY! Were checking in at the St.Andrews building, YIPPEE!!! (Anyone who is familiar with Glasgow Airport will note the sarcasm here). The St.Andrews building is at the other end of the airport, quite a hike when you have luggage. Finally reached our check in area, 4 desks for our flight and we managed to join the one with the shortest queue. We were quickly checked in by Lewis, very efficient, he had hair like Gareth Gates. With boarding tickets in hand and the news that our flight was on time we hiked back to the main terminal building.
Had a look around the shops and questioned, as I do every year why Dixons at the airport sell televisions? Decided to go through to departure lounge. When we joined the queue for passport control the lady in front of us was saying goodbye to her mum. It was all very tearful, brought a lump to my throat and tears did roll down my cheeks when at the last glimpse of her mum she shouted, See you next year and then mouthed I love you. Im very emotional. Through metal detector without it going off and baggage screening without having it searched. Went into WH Smith and bought Irn-bru and magazines for the flight. I had to buy more polo mints because for some reason I put the polo mints I had already bought into my holdall! We then were cornered by some woman trying to get us to enter a competition to win a holiday to Florida, no-one was entering so we figured there must be a catch to it so politely declined. I did consider entering it in Bouncys name but then thought with my luck she would probably win it so I didnt. Had some tea and a cake in the café and watched the planes take off and then set off for the hike to departure gate 30. Why oh why does my plane always take off from the gate furthest away?
Onto plane after a 20 minute wait and find my posh seat in the premium section. Im there before the pilot, Im actually in the aisle blocking his way so I move to let him past because I figure were not going anywhere if I dont. I have to say I was disappointed with the Premium seats and wouldnt bother with them again when flying with Britannia. You do get extra leg room and free in flight drinks but thats about it. I didnt think it was worth the money. We had a choice of 3 films but they only ran once. I watched Absolutely Fabulous and Frank Skinner (Joe Pasquale was on this and I was LOL because it was him we posted a picture of for Cuthbert). No-one was laughing so I looked stupid.
By half way through the flight the pilot had told us twice that we will be landing at 8.55pm, that is 4.55pm local time. Yes you read that correctly, the pilot cannot do subtraction!!!!!! Meal was a choice of chicken or beef. We both chose the chicken. It was alright. Tricia ate the starter, not sure what it was, she said it was horrible. To me it looked like a slice of tomato in a fur coat. Continued writing my notes for this drivel that you are reading and the man in front reclines his seat at great speed almost knocking me unconscious. Okay so Im exaggerating but it could have been sore.
Towards the end of the flight the annoying child behind me started to bounce my chair. He had done so on and off up till now but this was continuous, I glared at him and he stopped. Peace you might think. NO, he decides to kick the chair instead. His mum did tell him to stop but he laughs in her face.
Plane lands at 8.55pm. Cabin crew tell us that local time is 3.55pm. Im so glad someone can subtract. I wonder if anyone told the pilot. The pilot then comes on to tell us that the small engine at the back of the plane has failed so we need to keep another engine on or all the flights will go out.
We were third off the plane and expected Immigration to be empty but an Air 2000 flight had got there first so we had to queue. The Immigration man was very friendly, chatting to us as he did his Immigration man duties. Its about 15 minutes before any luggage appears on the carousel. We were all kept entertained by the annoying child who was sitting behind me and his brother and cousin who were pushing each other and climbing on peoples trolleys and giving their parents cheek. Once we had our luggage we went through customs. The nice man asked us if we had brought any food with him, we told him we had pasta and he said thats fine and sent us off to the left and out the building. Almost everyone else was sent to have their bags x-rayed.
Step outside into the heat and light rain and find the Unijet rep. Soon on the bus. The driver was really nice, when I went to take the holdalls off the trolley he told me to leave them because I was on holiday and that was his job. He was so different to the driver we would encounter on our return to the airport. We drop off at numerous hotels on International Drive and finally arrive at All Star Movies around 8.15pm.
We are checked in by Debbie and we ask if there are any rooms available in Dalmations. She says just let me check. There are and she gives us room 1908 and we are looking onto the Fantasia pool, not directly onto but we can see it from our window. Very happy indeed. Unpack and go and buy new resort mugs and go and look in the gift shop. Go to bed around 10pm and I spend most of the night in the bathroom being sick. Nothing unusual here this is how I spend the first night every year. I think the excitement and the time difference and the flight etc.. all gets too much for me, Ill be fine in the morning.
