Just off the phone trying to get our ducks in a row for a birthday party. We can bring our own cake - but it has to be store bought, not homemade. "Something about liability" was her only explanation. Can anyone enlighten me as to the rationale behind this one?

Store-bought would have a list of ingredients, should anyone suffer an allergic reaction.

plus store bought is cooked in a Health Department liscensed kitchen.

My kids' schools do this too. You can bring up cupcakes, etc. for birthday parties, but they have to be store-bought.

Ironically DS is allergic to tree nuts. Most bakeries use tree nuts in some products. They won't (& can't) state that their cakes are nut free.

I'm not clear how D&B could be liable for food they didn't provide and
I've never heard of anyone getting ill (not talking allergic reaction) from baked goods - unless they ate too much. Dave & Busters doesn't offer cakes.

I couldn't tell you, perhaps the eggs and salmonella poisoning. There could also be a myriad of cross-contamination problems from dirty counters or whatever.

I'm just fairly certain that no establishment is allowed to have food served that is not prepared in a kitchen that is inspected and liscensed by the Health Department.

If somebody did become ill, it would be very difficult to determine which food it was that caused it.

Ask the store for a cake box, and bake your own cake. Is Dave and Buster's going to require a receipt? I don't think so. My kids have food allergies, and I'll bring whatever I feel like, wherever I feel like.

You could go get a cake box from Michael's and they wouldn't know the difference. I normally wouldn't say that but since you are dealing with allergies I would consider it.

This thought has crossed my mind.

the schools around here don't even allow homemade. and it's not something new in policy-a school i taught at over 20 years ago had the same policy in place (could'nt guarantee the health conditions of someone's home).

i would hesitate to try and get one over on a bsns. with this policy-unless someones awfuly good at making a homemade and decorating it's fairly easy to determine it's not store bought. a bsns. could refuse the right to serve it and then leave you with no bday cake at all.
