She just called home! It was SOOO nice hearing from her. She aced her first inspection and got to call home for 45 minutes! I miss her so much, and it is extremely hard trying to be upbeat. I'm so proud of her, that sometimes I feel like my chest will explode! She is being considered for SAR. (Sea Air Rescue).

She said her swim test was so easy. I told her it was because of all the times we went to Blizzard Beach and she went down Slummit Plummit! So there is another prop for Disney!

Thanks for letting me gush.....

How sweet! You should be proud, excited, nervous and happy all at the same time. When will she know about her first assignment? Is she in the Coast Guard?

Please thank her for her service to our country!

wowwwwwwwwwww 45 minutes that is neat!!!! I remember being able to call for like 2 minutes on my first call!! That is really cool!! I am glad she got to call you :) You sound like such a proud mama :)

Her first "I'm here" call never came through. So, I guess technically this is her second call. LOL! After she graduates (PIR) from bootcamp, she goes to her A school. She is going to be a Ligistics Specialist. She is a grad and go which means she only has about an hour with us after PIR before she has to leave for the airport. She did say we were able to stay with her at the airport until she leaves. For now it looks like she will be doing her schooling in Mississippi.

I miss her. We are really close. She was my little 3lb pre mature baby. Now is is my 100lb soaking wet NAVY recruit! :lovestruc

I have one at bootcamp too and I always like the phone calls although they usually aren't quite that long. I am very proud of mine who seems to have adapted well.:cool1:

Oh, yay!

I'd be beaming, too! You must just want to tell everyone! I would, too!

Awww, I know full well how much you miss her. My girl is in the national guard, basic and ait was difficult for all. Hang in there. :)

 I'm glad you got to talk to her.

My 16 year old is pretty certain he wants to join the army, so I may be making a post like this someday. :scared:

I'm really happy for ya both! Sounds like she's doing great! She's going to have lots of adventures and she will learn SO much, but she will also always be your little girl. :goodvibes I hope boot camp passes fast and you see her real soon!

-Dorothy (LadyZolt) (proud Navy vet -- went to boot camp in Orlando when there was a Navy recruit training center there, and to Disney World for my very first visit just after boot camp; proud wife of a Navy / Coast Guard vet; proud mother of Navy son who just made E-5 this month -- Oooh rah!)

Congratulations.

I remember the first call I got to make home when I was in Basic Training for the Navy. I tried calling my mother, and there was no answer. I was 17 and had never been away from home before, and I hadn't talked to anyone for over a month. I was completely destroyed. Then I got to call again two weeks later for acing a test. So it was okay.

OP, glad to hear things are going well! DD20 is strongly considering joining the Navy after the next school year, so there's a good possibility that I'll be in your shoes this time next summer.

Same here. I remember calling hearing my dad answer and then it was time to get off the phone. 45 minutes is awesome! She sounds like she is in good spirits!

45 minutes is a really long call. Glad you got to have a long talk with her.

I don't ever remember being able to talk to anyone that long when I was in basic! There were about five phone booths and the entire flight would be lined up to make calls. We were a little tolerant of the people with kids but everyone else pretty much got 10 minutes and then it was someone elses turn.

Wow, that is great that she was able to call you.
My son is a Marine and they were allowed to make a phone call the night they arrived at Parris Island. They had to read a scripted call: this is recruit Chris D. I have arrived at Parris Island and have begun training. I will be writing you soon with my address. then click, they had to hang up. I never even got to say anything. He said that he would have rather not called than make that call, he said it was cruel to the families.
I didn't hear from him other than letters for 13 weeks. They had 15 minutes before bed to write, once a week.
Now he has a phone and is in CA and I hear from him every day. My son is 25 but he and his brothers and I have always had a very tight bond and we miss him terribly. He is going to Japan in December and I hope I can get there to visit him because he can't use his cell from there.

Actually, while your son is a sweetie who calls home, there are tons of young folks who just don't even think of it. When I was in the Navy stationed in Japan, the Commanding Officer regularly received letters from parents (usually, worried moms) who hadn't heard from Junior in months and asking if he was OK (I'm sure there are young women who don't write home, but all of the ones I personally encountered back in the early 1980's were young men). So, while the short, scripted call was abrupt, it served to let you knew he arrived safe and that call was better than no notification. I'm sure they were all required to call someone in order to prevent those worried letters and calls from parents. After training, they're on their own and there are those who fail to call or tell their families anything -- that in my opinion is far more cruel.

My son joined the Navy and we got a letter (scripted) a few days later telling us he arrived, and an address to write back to him. Then I got a box containing his civilian clothes and that was what really triggered the "mom" in me and I cried. LOL! If he got a phone call, he didn't use it to call us, but I'm sure he used it to talk to his (now ex) girlfriend. :lmao:

How thrilled and excited you must be. Mixed with sadness at missing her. Congratulations to her for doing so well. You hang in there, mom!
