Daughter is going to College Intern Program

Is there anyway you can apply for a specific job, or do they try to put you some where that you have experience in? My son has always said he would like to do this program, although he is a few years away from this. He is an avid golfer, and works on a golf course and that is the area he would love to work in.

No you can't ask for a specific assignment. Disney makes the decision where you will go.

Sometimes it makes sense where you are assigned other times it doesn't.

OK, just had to jump in here as I look to be the only guy who has also been on the program... albeit, gulp, 10 years ago.

Congratulations to all of you who have a daughter or son in the program before, now or in the future. It is truly magical.

I will add my nod to all the things mentioned previously. Furniture is sparse. Bring a small TV if you want. Having five other roomies is a challenge, but fun. Cooking is an adventure. An Orlando-area Entertainment book would be a good thing for a CPer to have.

During my stay we figured out somewhere along the line that with rent, food, merchandise, etc, that WE were actually paying Disney about a quarter an hour to work for them. Not really. But it seems that way.

The only thing I'd change now is to stay longer. Now, I'm taking my family to WDW next month for their first trip. (I know, I know, we should have gone before now... it's a long story).

Anytway, everybody Hhve a wonderful and safe holiday.

Congratulations to all the new WDWCP's!

I was a mechandise hostess at Disney Clothiers in the spring of 1991. I loved the college program, and at MK, they still called us "mkcp's" for Magic Kingdom College Program. I had never been to WDW before I applied; my first sight of the Magic Kingdom was during the Disney training class!

I also had an agricultural engineering intership at the Land Pavillion the Spring of 1992. That was one of the best times of my life and the friends I met there are still among my closest. I gave the hour-long walking tour in the greenhouses (it was FREE back then!) and the rest of the time I was responsible for the environmental monitoring of the 11 greenhouses. (Four "on-stage" and seven "off-stage.")

My little boy is only 2 years old and I'm already thinking about visiting him while he's on the College Program!

My goodness, it took me nearly 30 min to read all the posts on this thread :)

I have a question to those of you who have been thru the program. Do you recall any "special ed" students that are given the chance to work thru the program?

My 19 yr old DD is graduating from HS and is planning on continuing her education. She is cognitively delayed, BUT has more common scence than people w/o any disability. She has been a councilor for other younger kids with special needs at a camp just for kids w/ disabilities, as well as a Partners in Policymaking self advocate.

She loves Disney and Mom loves Disney even more :) Hope they include students w/ special needs.
Thanks for any replies.
Gerri

Why not check with Disney to see if they have a program that would suit your daughters needs. I am sure they must do something.

i know i've seen phys disabled employees, but none that i've seem(in 5+ visits) seemed to have primarily cognitive disabiliities. Now, I stay offsite, so there may well be maids, restaurant staff etc who are working there. I know my daughter applied once, and didn't get hired, but she didn't pursue it farther. it might be a good question for cast members who might know more about it.

My daughter is finishing up her second CP program. She started last May and went to Jan. Then she extended. She will be done May 16.

She loves the program. She is going to do an advanced internship with WDW also.

Which advanced internship is your daughter lookign to do, safetymom? My daughter is also looking to do the advanced internship - she wants the Marine Mammals one. But first she is auditioning for a character rols this week. She would like to go back for the fall as a character.

Will your daughter be coming home to go back to school for a semester or two before she applies for the advanced internship role?

Long story with my daughter and the Advanced internship. She applied for one in Guest Relations. She did the paperwork and Interview. Then one dept. decided she couldn't be on the program that long without a break. The other dept. said it was ok. So we don't know what is going on. Some other department called and asked if she would be interested in another position. She has the interview for that this week. She really loves guest relations. She is a Rescue Ranger at Epcot, this means she fills in where needed in the park. I am jealous because Epcot is my favorite park.

Either way she is coming home for a few weeks starting May 17. Hopefully in the next week or two we will find out what she will be doing.

We are selling our house and moving to Florida. It just depends on when it sells but I would like to get a part time job at Disney. I realize that they don't make much money but decided after all the fun my daughter has had maybe it is time for Mom to have a little fun.

So she is going to enroll in school down in Orlando and do online classes if the advanced internship has to wait until Spring 2004.

Your daughters interest sounds like fun.

My daughter leaves next week! She's so excited. She's all ready been through Basic Training & AIT for the Army National Guard so she's been away from home a lot all ready. She'll be 20 in August. They will accomodate her for her weekends with the guards & her 2 weeks during the summer also. She has been assigned as a lifeguard. The website is very informative about this program! She'll be flying down herself, & DH & I will be driving down in November for our scheduled trip...she'll be there until January! I just wish we could afford to go more often while she's there!

Lucky kids!

I can't believe that there are only two weeks to go before my daughter will be at the program. Anyone know how to get on the line for the program. My daughter was fine until they changed something about there website. Now she can't seem to get in. She wrote to them about it but has not heard back. Marla

Montana..... I know how you feel about wanting to be there..... when I told my daughter that maybe if I found a good price and would come down for a quick weekend, she expressed concern that I might be there all the time! She is concerned. I told her that if I come, maybe I won't tell her because it will cut into the time that I have to spend in the parks! HA!

mirmatt where are you from? It's a 5 - 6 day drive from here in northern Montana. Makes for a long trip if you don't like to fly! :p

Hopefully our girls will get good roomies & have nothing but a blast!!! Is your daughter packed yet? Mine is partially packed. She will be staying at her grandmother's in Orlando for a couple days before she checks in. She plans on going over there the day or so before & making sure they know where they are going. She also has to check in with the National Guard unit there so she has a lot on her plate the first few days she is there.

This is so exciting! I wish they had this when I was in college! But that was back in the stone age. :teeth:

I have read of so many of these kids that decide to stay and attend UCF after the CP. How do they establish residency so that they don't have to pay out of state tuition?

We have 37 days until my son goes. I know it will fly by.

Hi Montana..... we are not packed yet..... oops, I mean she is not packed yet! We live in Michigan and have only gone there by flying. It is about 22 hours driving time, which we haven't done. DD has not started packing and I keep saying that we need to see what she needs. This week we'll start. I am going there with her on the 4th of June when she is expected to be there. I am going to rent a car, which I normally do not do, so that I can get her any things that she needs right away. Then she is on her own. I also hope that they get nice roommates. It just has to do with who you are in line with, as I've been told. DD is 19 and this is her first experience away. I will be in Orlando from the 4th to the 8th, and then I will be at home. I will be there with the family in the summer as we are there every summer for vacation. We don't have any relatives nearby, so she is going there directly from the airport. (I've got to get the directions) Talk to you soon

I have found this way to Disney is the quickest. You don't have to worry about traffic. There are 2 tolls but you will be there in no time.

Continue going straight on 535 until you see Goodings on your right at the light. Turn left and you will see the gate for Disney. You will be at Downtown Disney or before you get to the light you can get on I-4 then get off exit for your resort.

Good luck to all the new college Program CMs(and their parents!)! I can't believe that four months have passed since we brought my daughter down to start the program. It's been an incredible experience for her. She loved her job at the Emporium, had great roomates, and learned alot from the Disney course she took. I'm sorry we won't be able to use her as an excuse for visiting so much-we managed to take 4 short trips while she was there. Enjoy every minute!

Thanks, Safety, for the directions. They take us to the Vista, right? (I think that is where they go on the first day)

Hey BuzzMe...... got any little things to know that might help us new parents to the program..... or the kids going? Like....don't forget to bring....... or maybe info. on their days off, or scheduling, etc. Is it hard for kids in the program to request any days off? My daughter thinks that it won't be a problem, but I'm not so sure. Just met someone yesterday who told us that the kids have no money once their rent is taken out of their salary. We are prepared to assist, but is it that bad for them, financially? Just wondering......
