Daughter flying alone (Question)

My daughter will be flying alone this Saturday. She is a teen. What type of ID will she need to board a plane?

If she is 18 or older, she will need a valid government-issued photo ID to get through the TSA checkpoint without a major hassle. If she is under 18, she does not need any ID unless she is traveling on an age-restricted youth fare and then the airline (not TSA) will need proof of age to verify that she qualifies for the fare.

If she is under 18 but does have a passport, driver's license or learner's permit, then it can provide some peace of mind to make sure she has that. As noted, it's not required but TSA can get a little weird about following their own rules from time to time.

Hmmmm. Thanks, but how do I know if she is on an age restricted fare? She is 13. She really only has her birth certificate. She is flying on Airtran (operated through SkyWest).

Age-restricted fares are very uncommon. Chances are she is on a standard fare.

If she is an inexperienced flyer, I highly recommend registering her as an unaccompanied minor and paying the associated fee, unless this is a really short flight with no connections. If there are any issues (delays, missed connections), she will be taken care of. Otherwise, she'll be on her own.
