daughter accepted--questions

How do the extensions work? I'm hoping my daughter can get that. She was just accepted and we have her arrival date of Aug 4th 2014. We're in Az so, it's a long way to take a car. She will be dependent on buses and hopefully maybe roommates with have a car as well. Would love to get her on this board

My daughter's program was originally through May 2013. Extension apications came out in March. She works at Kilimanjaro Safaris and they accepted six kids to extend. One of her managers told her she should be very happy because they didn't take everyone. You have to have a very clean record. That extension took her to August 2nd. Applications for a second extension came out in July and she was again accepted and her program ended January 3, 2014. Disney will allow you to miss two consecutive semesters of school while in the college program. You have to go back to school for at least one semester and you can apply again for another program.

My daughter went seasonal after her program ended. We are at WDW now for her Spring Break and she is working for four days. She will come down when school is over and work for the summer. She graduates in December and plans on moving down to continue working for Disney. That is a ways off so I'm not really sure that will happen! Her boyfriend is from Florida and also works at Disney - so we will see!

That is a good story! I am happy your daughter got to extend. I have a little question... when one extends do they still need to be in college for the extended college program? Or are you all good since you are already in the program?princess:

My daughter did the CP twice. The first time she didn't have a car. The second time she took auto train. She said it was great. She finished in Jan and finished school in Dec so she actually applied for a full time job and stayed. I will let you know she said it was so much easier with a car. Michelle

My son just got accepted and he too wants to take his car. It is a 1998 low mileage Nissan. I am going to have it completely checked over because the furthest it has been in ten years is to St. Louis. We live in central Illinois. If it isn't too personal, could you let me know how much it cost to ship it down and how far you had to ship it?

Her car was shipped from the metro Detroit area and the cost was $800. I was going down with her and my husband wasn't comfortable with her and I driving by ourselves. The nice thing was that she was able to fill her car with everything she was bringing to Florida and we didn't have to fly with extra luggage. Her brother was available in January when her program ended so he flew down and drove her home.

You have to be enrolled in college when you apply. So you could be in your last semester of school when you apply and graduate before your program begins! Once in the college program you would be able to extend even though you are not in school anymore. You would still only be able to stay for approximately a year. If you wanted to stay on working for Disney then you would have to switch to seasonal and/or apply for full or part time. You would then have to find your own housing and transportation.

Thanks for the additional info. That is helpful!

Does anyone have any advice regarding a bank account? I would like to keep his bank account at our hometown bank. Makes it much easier for me to transfer money to it if I need to. He would have a debit card to use for most things. My concern is if he needs cash. I don't want him having the added expense of ATM fees since they can be much higher in high tourist areas.

Any advice is appreciated.

My daughter kept her home account. We have accounts at the same bank so it was very easy to transfer money to her account. She had to go to urgent care a couple of times and get prescriptions filled. She needed to get new contacts while she was down there. She would pay with her debit card and I would reimburse her for those kind of unexpected expenses. I'm not sure if she used ATMs. I'm on her account and I would check it every week to see how much money she had and it seemed like she used her debit card for almost everything.

I used my hometown bank account when i was there. If i knew i needed cash for something I would just go to walgreens (within walking distance of vista) and buy a snack or something i needed and get cash back

That is what I am leaning towards doing for the same reason. If his account is at my bank I can easily transfer money if I need to. Thanks!

Thanks for mentioning the 'cash back' when making purchases. That completely slipped my mind as an option for him. I know he will be buying items so he can get cash that way without incurring the ATM fees.
