Dating Someone Who Smokes...

Twenty years ago when smoking was more prevalent I did date a few smokers and it didn’t overly bother me, but that’s when people still smoked in bars and some restaurants so I was more acclimated to it if that’s the right word.

Now, I almost never see smokers, and when I do the smell really bothers me. There’s no way I could now.

There are still 14 states that allow smoking inside restaurants! We were moving cross-country and stopped for lunch in Mississippi a few years ago and I was shocked.

Those who are non smokers and have dated someone who smokes...how was your experience?

Those who haven’t dated someone who smokes, would you...?

I dated someone who was a smoker once. I found out she smoked on the first date. She didn't get a second.
I can't say kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray because I've never licked an ashtray. But it tasted about how I'd imagine an ashtray would taste if I licked it.
She didn't get a second and I wouldn't even consider it if I was still dating. It would be a deal breaker.
My grandmother smoked and the stench was in all her clothes, her furniture, here house. Everything. Just gross. Smokers really do go noseblind to it.

No. It would be a deal breaker for me.
I admit my opinion about smoking is pretty harsh, but not only would I not like the smell, the taste when kissing etc. I just think it’s a really stupid thing to do (on this day and age). Anyone in the age group I would be dating would have been taught since at least middle school about the dangers of smoking. Plus unlike alcohol or drugs-there is really no upside (it’s not like it’s fun when you start)

I cannot STAND the smell of cigarette smoke, it makes me physically ill. I remember the days where smoking was still allowed in some restaurants and I could barely breathe throughout the meal. Ugh. "Non-smoking section"...Ha HA

I remember at KLM flight from Amsterdam (to Bangkok if I remember right) back when there was smoking sections. We were the row behind the smoking section and for an asthmatic kid that was a very long and increasingly scary flight. My family has never in over 20 years flown KLM again because of the way we were “looked after” during it.

I've gone back and forth on the issue in the past and there have been times my health wouldn't have allowed for it. The man I'm with now smokes...he's an ex pat from Paris, whatcha gonna do? He's probably not going to stop drinking wine, eating gob tons of butter or drinking super dark coffee either.

Even before I had asthma, smoke gave me a headache and made me feel nauseated. There's no way I could date a smoker. DH jokes that if he ever wanted to get rid of me, all he would have to do is start smoking.

As a non-smoker I would never have considered dating someone who smoked.

I'm a non-smoker. I never did and never would have even considered dating a smoker, even way back in high school in the 80's. I can't even stand near a heavy smoker without the small making it hard to catch my breath.

I married a guy who was a chewer. nasty nasty nasty I realized about a week into the marriage that his morning breath was better than his daytime breath.

I would not marry a smoker. I dislike the smell of cigarette smoke. I grew up smelling like an ashtray; my parents smoked, my siblings smoked, which meant I smelled like I did. Yuck!

My husband and I both use to smoke but decided to get healthy.. I wouldn’t again but also wouldn’t date anyone who was not fit or trying to be healthy either .

Since I love the smell of all those things, I'd be cool with that. It's the smell of smoke I could never get past. :crazy2:

My DH smoked when he was a teen (before we met). By the time we met, he had switched to dip (which I honestly didn't know when we started dating). It is a gross habit.
He quit, cold turkey, about 7 years ago when he had to have his wisdom teeth out. I was so proud of him.

But while dip is a gross habit, it doesn't get in my lungs, hair and clothes. It is something that just effected him, even though I would constantly hound him about throat cancer.

I can't say for sure that I wouldn't have, when I was young and dating. - Both my parents smoked, so I think I was less sensitive to it back then.

But thankfully, I happened to end up with dates (and eventually a DH) who didn't smoke.

I definitely notice the smell way more now, plus we know more about the health risks, so I understand people considering it a deal-breaker.

Eh. Probably no, I wouldn't date someone who smokes.

OTOH, when I met DH, he was a non-smoker. In his late-20's, he started smoking the occasional cigarette (he worked in a place where nearly everyone else smoked, and to be social, he started taking smoke breaks with them). For about a decade, he'd smoke a few cigarettes a week (seriously, not much at all). Then, our kids were born, and he stopped. Hasn't smoked since. I am very grateful. It's a foul, disgusting habit. He agrees, but found himself "needing" it, at only a low level of smoking.
