Didn't the TV show check any of the backgrounds on it's participants?

Why did the young lady that chose him, back down from their date?

They likely did, but in the 70s we didn't have access to databases via computer and have lots of info in seconds like we have today. To get info about a police record in another state, county...heck, even another town...was not easy.
