DD7 has a dark ring around her mouth, it is not really dark but looks like it is dirty. I have scrubbed it numerous times and it will not go away. Has anyone every had this or heard of this.

I know i'm probably reaching, but my cousin gave himself a cup hickey once that freaked everyone out until they figured out what happened. He sucked up on the cup until it left a hickey like mark around his lips.

That's funny, but it has been there for a few weeks now and I think a hickey would be gone by now(if I remember correctly , been married 23 years so its been a long time) and the coloring is different then a hickey.

Is he a lip licker? My DD used to do this, particularly in the winter and would wind up with almost like a scab around her mouth from the constant licking or biting of her lower lip. If it wasn't raw it did look brownish.

I remember my daughter having this years ago but for the life of me can't remember what the heck it was- it was related to dry lips I think? It wasn't anything major enough for me to remember and I remember it going away on it's own after using some blistex.

Good luck.

It has never been raw or have any type of raised area. She is not really a lip licker, but she does have sensory issues and I thought maybe she was doing something with her teeth or tongue but if she is doing that I thought there would be a rough part or sore.

Has she recently had very chapped lips? Try Aquaphor (you can find it near the Eucerin lotion). It helps with all sorts of skin irritations.

I have also heard of this kind of thing as a symptom of iron deficiency.

I thought the same thing! My kids used to try to suck their lips into a bottle. They thought it was funny until they had the ring around their lips. They didn't repeat it after that.

It might be broken blood vessels from doing something like that. If it isn't coming off, that might be what it is.

Does she have allergies? I just did a Google search and found that hyper-pigmentation around the mouth can be related to allergies.

No allergies, but the iron defeinency got me thinking, she doesn't really like red meats and her older sister was anemic and had to take iron pills.

That was my first thought. My oldest can be a licker especially if he is worried about something and it can get a dark/dirt like look as it heals up/isn't raw.

Have you tried putting anything on it like Carmex or Aquaphor for a few days to see if it helps?

My DS8 is a lip licker, too, and this is exactly what happens to him. It starts out red and raw looking, but then turns brownish.

That was my first thought. My son did this to himself when he was around 9 years old. It was extremely dark and looked hideous for quite a few days.

OMG I was just going to post that my DD8 has done this and that was the first thing that came to my mind when I read this post.
