Okay so my dd (8) has recently had flakes in her hair above her ears. I am not sure what to do about it.

I bought some head and shoulders shampoo/conditioner. Is there anything else I can do? This has never been a problem with her before and I want to get in control before she goes back to school.

My daughters had what I thought was dandruff. I was using Head & Shoulders and it was making no difference. Then I went to get their hair cut and was told it was actually buildup and to use clarifying shampoo. That got rid of the flakes.

It sounds lie its just a small area, in which case you can just part the area in the area in a couple of places and massage a little bit of moisturizer into the scalp.

is the H&S helping at all? Oldest son has dandruff and this helps quite well. Middle son has spots of eczema and actually the doctor told him to wash that area with it. He gets it bad behind his ears, sometimes in the winter it will crack so bad, it bleeds. We now treat in the winter with the H&S and some intensive moisturizer that my husband has.

Do be careful and watch it carefully. When we first noticed the dandruff on the oldest, we tried a different shampoo. He was at school and his head started itching real bad and felt like it was burning. He ended up in the nurses office. We switched to H&S and he doesn't have that problem.

Well, we just started the HS shoulders today. :goodvibes She has been complaining that her scalp has been itchy lately. We just moved to a new home - so the water could be contributing to that. Also we have been swimming almost every day.

Thanks for the tips/suggestions! It helps to talk to other people who have dealt with this.

It could actually be dry scalp instead of dandruff. especially if they've been swimming so much. make sure they slather on a good moisturizing conditioner and massage it into the scalp.

My oldest DS and DDIL were afraid to rub my DGS & DGD's scalps too hard. They both had the worst cradle cap I had ever seen! I had to gently tell them both that they needed to scrub the scalp harder. That may be all you need to do!:)

Just make sure it is not lice. When you say above the ears and itchy, that is what I think of having gone thru lice twice with my dd.
That is where they hang out.

MTE, especially because of the itching part. If you try to brush off the flakes, do they come off? If not, you might be dealing with lice. Check the base of the neck, too.

DD2 scared me half to death one day last month, when her white-blond hair was full of dark flecks. I was *sure* they were bugs -- but it turned out that the Little Princess had been rubbing DIRT into her hair! It took me about two hours to comb it all out.

I have found that most of the time when kids get dandruff-type flaking it is shampoo residue -- they tend not to take the time to rinse well enough and fail to use their fingers to lift the hair so that the water gets all the way to the scalp for the rinse.

Nizoral is the only shampoo that has ever worked for me. It's kind of expensive, but the good news is that once you use it a couple of times, it takes care of the problem and then you only have to use it every month or so (using other shampoos in between, of course ;)).
