Most of these singing or dance competition shows tend to come down to the demographics of the viewers and the popularity of the contestants The judges critique the dances based on various technical aspects which likely most of us aren't even familiar with (i.e. did they keep their shoulders square or always had one foot on the floor type of things). Nothing wrong with that, but the winner may be more about popularity (or their back-story) and less about their proficiency as a dancer.
