Dancing With the Stars: Fall 2016

From what I remember Val knew and played a part in it from her as well.

Right. But I can't imagine that the decision was made w/o at least some input & then agreement from her parents.

I'd be interested in knowing who approached whom first...

Did the producers go to her parents & say, "Hey, is it okay if we keep this from her for 2 days, so we can make it more of a story for the show's sake?"

Or did her parents go to the show & say, "Laurie's grandmother has passed away. But, so that she can practice & perform w/o the added stress of knowing, we think it might be a good idea if we didn't tell her right away."

Or was it some kind of joint decision?

EDITED TO ADD - It does bother me a bit that, no matter how or why the decision was made, Val was told & knew before Laurie did. What benefit was there to him knowing before her - unless he was consulted for his opinion? (I'd have to go back & read the article to see if this was the case.)

That doesn't bother me. He's an adult and her coach. He should have known in case she got wind of it earlier. Now ... if the whole REST of the cast knew ... that's a different story.

This is true on both points, & I think I agree.

I was just thinking it's kinda sad that all adults in her life knew & kept it from her - and I guess the reasoning behind them keeping it from her makes all the difference.

W/ Val though, w/ him knowing, it gave him a chance to work it into the dance - w/o her knowing why the dance was being choreographed in a specific way.

"Surprise! This dance is a tribute to your grandmother!"

However, for me, it's one thing to make that kind of decision so that the person can continue on w/ whatever his/her "have to" duty (performance, exam, trip, etc.) is at the moment & wait to tell the person when he/she has the proper space to grieve, if that makes sense.

It's another thing, though (at least to me), to withhold that kind of information & then purposefully use it in the manner the show did for "entertainment" purposes.

It's not just for "entertainment" purposes. Laurie gets thousands of dollars per episode that she stays on. And she probably gets several thousand more on top of her weekly salary if she wins. Plus, if she wins, she gets to negotiate for even more money as a headliner in the DWTS tours. She's sweet, she's cute as a button, and like Bindi, she's an incredible attraction for the show. The show has been subtly pushing it on us that they've been positioning her to win.

Every other star that is in the Finals has another successful career to go back to that will continue. They can literally afford to leave. Being a gymnast, Laurie's days are numbered and they will depend on product endorsements and doing things like the DWTS tour once she stops being a competitive athlete. I'm sure this is also one of those situations that her parents had to factor in. And would her grandmother have wanted her to continue dancing in spite of her death?

I DO find it an interesting coincidence that VAL is the pro partner of both Laurie and Ginger, whom we all know the producers had also pushed on us to win. I have to wonder how much power/input he had in any decision to keep this from her? He's not Derek and the power Derek seems to have. How much did Val HAVE to comply with what the producers ordered him to do? And how much does he also really want another win under his belt, having been so close last season when he & Ginger expected to win, if it hadn't been for the backlash from the audience who caught onto ABC's obvious hand in the manipulations to have Ginger win with all her "Perfect 10's"?

That might not have been his decision. The producers pick what songs they dance to, for the most part. They probably handed him the song and said, "You are doing a tribute to her grandmother."

All this is true too.

I don't necessarily fault Val. Like you said, I'm sure he was doing what the producers (his boss) told him to do.

I just felt really sorry for Laurie - again, all the adults around her knew &, for different reasons (both good & bad) didn't tell her, and, in a sense, turned her grandmother's death into a performance - that Laura had to play out in the spotlight.

And I'm sure her grandmother would have wanted her to dance. I would want the exact same for any of my children or grandchildren.

But for me, again, there's a bit of a difference in the following 2 scenarios & how one, to me, feels more "manipulative" than the other:

Olympic Announcer: "And, now, ready to do her floor routine is Laurie Hernadez. As you know, Bob, 3 days ago, Laurie's grandmother passed away, &, when I talked to Laurie earlier this morning, she told me she was doing her routine as a tribute to her beloved grandmother. Her grandmother always supported Laurie, and I know the 16 year old gymnast feels her presence with her this afternoon. And, of course, she has America behind her as well."

DWTS Producer: "Okay, let's show the video of Laurie w/ her grandmother. Then cut to a black screen w/ the announcement. And then we'll play some sad music while pictures of Laurie & her grandmother scroll across the screen. Oh, & then, at the end, let's have a clip of her grandmother talking to the camera. I've spoken to Val, & he's choreographing a nice routine."

While she's *now* a celebrity gymnast, it's a very recent life change for her - unlike some of the other celebrities, I would think she hasn't yet really had a chance to know exactly how to handle all the "stuff" that goes w/ being in the public eye. That said, I thought she handled herself very well & was very poised & gracious.

After she received 3 10s from the judges, DH commented & said, "Of course she received a perfect score! Who's gonna give the girl whose grandmother just died an 8?"

Anyway, it's not the first time DWTS has used a star's personal life to their advantage, & I'm sure it won't be the last. And, admittedly, I'm sure many of the stars capitalize on their personal stories too.

Here we go! The Finals, part 1.

Calvin's little son, Caleb is so cute. :lovestruc

Carrie Ann's an idiot for seeing a lift. Lindsay's shoe looked like it got stuck when Calvin was pushing her and she picked up her foot to re-position it, and Carrie Ann calls that a lift. :sad2:

Carrie Ann now says that Jana did a "lift" too.

LEN (the only REAL ballroom dancer and judge,) finally addressed Carrie Ann's obsession with lifts, saying that if one INTENTIONALLY does a lift during a dance that shouldn't have a lift, then it should be penalized. If the foot just happened to come off the floor while being swung around, it shouldn't be considered a lift.

THANK YOU LEN!!! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Is someone going home tonight? I'm wondering if I need to wait until the end of the show to vote ;)

Yes, one more person is going home tonight. Only 3 couple in the finale tomorrow.

The Freestyle dances are coming up later. Save your vote till then.

Jana's freestyle: I'm not a fan of emotionally tortured dances for the Freestyle. And Jana's journey - moving from victimhood - is getting a bit old.

Calvin's freestyle: That was the most openly energetic, personality-wise, we've seen of Calvin. He's usually so laid back and easy going. It was fun to see him having so much fun. :dancer:

I think Laurie is going to win, but I liked James' Freestyle the best. Laurie's dance was fun & sweet and of course, being an athlete, she can dance. James' dance was really personal. :thumbsup2

Totally disagree. I thought it was very moving. That said, James remains my favorite and gets my votes, with Calvin a close 2nd. I'm sick of the cutesy Laurie and hearing that she's America's sweetheart.
