Dancing on DCL?

Got another question from friends considering DCL that have only done other cruise lines and I didn't know the answer to this. They are a middle aged couple that like to dance, but more like the classic ballroom, big band, etc. type, and not the 'disco' type that they have in the adult clubs. I never noticed this on my cruise, but that could be because it's not my thing so I wouldn't have paid any attention. But are there any dancing opportunities like this anywhere on the ship? To my knowledge no, but I don't want to tell them no if they did do this and I just missed it.

On longer cruises, they offer ballroom classes and freestyle practice sessions in fathoms/azure and sometimes promenade lounge. On 7 night or shorter cruises, it depends on the band playing in promenade lounge. They typically offer family dance time with live music there.

Those were listed in the Navigators? I'll have to go back and check mine. It's possible that I just skimmed over it since I wasn't interested. Mine was also the 7 night Fantasy, so if it's only the ones longer I guess I won't find it. I could tell them they'd just have to take a longer cruise.

I just found the old Navigators and looked and I do see Family Dance Party. This was a 7 night Fantasy cruise. So Family Dance Party is more like classic dancing, big band, etc?

On the Magic and Wonder there is a small (very small) dance floor in the piano bars (Keys on the Magic, Cadillac Lounge on the Wonder) that people do ballroom and swing to the piano. I don't remember if the Fantasy or Dream have this. Only 2-3 couples can dance comfortably at the same time, though I've noticed a few spread out to the nearby carpeted area.

We were on the 2015 WBPC cruise and a few nights a big band set up in the atrium and people made a makeshift dance floor and got their dance on. The captains were out dancing on the Gala night in their dress whites (most people out dancing were in formal wear). It was a lot of fun.

No, the Family Dance Party will not be classic, big band dancing. It will be most likely Disney or Pop music.

Speaking of Keys, is that like a sing along type piano bar, or just where there's background piano playing?

When we were in Cadillac Lounge over the summer, it wasn't a sing-along type piano bar, but there was a man playing the piano and having people guess what movie/broadway show the songs were from. We only went 1 night, but found it a nice relaxing place to get away from most people. It was the 1 night the kids went off to their clubs after the theater show, so we checked out the adult areas, walking quickly by the very noisy Wavebands (now Azure), and settling into the relaxing atmosphere at Cadillac Lounge.

It can vary a bit. Depending on the style of the piano player. I've seen ones that have some sing along stuff but do the bulk of the singing themselves, and others who basically just play the piano for background music (no singing).

You could request some songs to sing along, and see if the piano player will accommodate.

Nice in theory Shmoo, but I assure you no one would want to hear any singing of mine. I'd be happy to request for others though.

I thought you were asking because you wanted to sing. :)

Mostly in the piano bars (on the Magic & Wonder) the piano playing style is more of a background music thing. Unlike some other cruise lines that have gone to the dueling pianos concept. There is also at least one cruise line that the piano players in the bars are of the "let's see how we can change the lyrics to make the song more sleazy" variety.

I would love to if I could but unfortunately that's not in my skill set.

Let me guess, that cruise line starts with the letter C?

As others have noted, it's pretty much just piano music, and sometimes the musician sings. Occasionally, he/she will play an old favorite that some people will softly sing along but mostly it's music to listen to as you relax, socialize, and enjoy a drink or two in a relatively quiet lounge. We often go before or after dinner (we have late seating), though not every night.
