Dance recital hair help?

Hi My daughter is in her first dance recital. She is 8 and has think hair. They want it in a side part pony tail with no flyaways. My daughter always gets flyaways, will hair spray help that, gel? I'm not sure what to use. Any specific brands work best?

My daughters were in dance ten years. We used lots of hair gel and hair spray. You knew it was done when the hair was solid and didn't move.

We always used cheap hair spray which worked better. One year my younger daughter counted bobby pins as she took them out. She had 70! She had long thick hair and had to wear it up.

Yup, cheap gel (think Dippity-Do from the 80's- LA Looks makes a similar version) while her hair is still wet, and lots of aquanet and bobby pins! Just be prepared to shampoo it a few times to get it all out!

I always found that if I wet the top of their heads, and then pulled it back and THEN sprayed it, that it stayed put much better with no flyaways.

I will be doing this myself pretty soon for the DD's recitals too!!

Yep, Spray and spray and then spray some more, and the cheap stuff. If you can't see a cloud of hairspray mist in the bathroom you don't have near enough.

My DD used to say you could bounce a ball off her hair and nothing would move.



Also don't worry about some bobby pins (matching the hair color of course) around the back of the hair line near the neck or behind the ears if you need to. They won't be seen from the stage.

My daughter is not in dance, but she is in competitive cheer, so same kind of hair requirements. Our gym does a high, straightened pony with no flyaways.

Absolute best product: Got To Be Glued hairspray. Our coaches recommend it and it really works. It is the yellow can that looks like an air horn. 99.99% of the gym (300+ athletes) swear by it. It is hysterical to see us running around a venue all with our yellow air horns in hand. And even though it is a bit more expensive than say, Aqua Net - you don't need to do the "cloud of spray." A can will last us 2 seasons.

I spray hair as I am putting the pony up, so it is a little wet with spray and then spray again after pony is in. You don't need many bobby pins with this stuff. It really glues your hair down.

My daughters don't dance this year, but when oldest dd was competing we also used the yellow can of Got to Be Glued .... amazing ... literally like we glued it in place! My daughter has VERY thick hair too! So we would mist it with water so it was a bit wet, put it in the desired pony and then spray it with GTBG ... voila - helmet head! No movement! We also used a few clips that were the same colour as her hair and like someone said previously, you can't see them from the stage!

Good luck ... this is what I don't miss about dance - the hair and makeup! I am just not a hair and makeup kind of gal, so it was a real learning curve (and stressful!) for me!!!

my oldest is a competitive gymnast so same sort of thing for meets..only a bun not a pony. The got 2 be glued is good and I also love the "monkey brains" brand of gel..works great! I slather her damp hair with it and comb it into a ponytail. then tons of spray

I have actually done this to her the night before and she has slept in it (early morning meet) and had minimal flyaways...nothing a little spritz couldnt fix.

I also love the monkey brains shampoo..gets the stuff out of her hair in one washing. I find it at walmart

I'll have to remember this for our girls at dance. Everyone at our recital wears their hair in a low bun. The only ones that don't have to have a bun are those that have hair too short to put back into a bun.

I do the hair for one of my daughter's large group dances for competition. Thank goodness one of the graduates has come in to help, and she's an expert at odd hairstyles. This year it is a bun with a styrofoam ball in the middle...

Lots of that yellow can hairspray - which reminds me to go get a new can for the competition this weekend - and I'm in the process of growing another arm and hand

For gymnastics (and figure skating) we couldn't use bobby pins, so we would sew the bun in place using a hairnet and fishing line.

This is my last year of having to do hair! 15 years of competitions, recitals, galas, and skating shows. I am sooooooo looking forward to the last recital!

I hate doing buns, they never stay in for me. So, that will really help. I would be thrilled if they could do a ponytail...of any kind. So much easier for us. Dang....why the bun????

Be sure you're using a hair net for extra security. My girls never do a bun without a net because their hair is so thick and full.

The heavy duty hair sprays and gels may be wonderful if you have one look for the entire show. I recommend trying out some of the styling pastes such as Bed Head products if you've got style changes. Nothing like the pressure cooker back stage of trying to get from a competition pony style or a ballet bun into "big, big, curly 80's 1/2 up/1/2 down" in four songs.

I swear I heard choirs of angels sing the year my oldest DD had the most numbers she'd ever been in AND decided she was ready to handle her own hair. It never looked better either.

When I was dancing, I had long thick hair and I would spray it with a water, then run gel thru it, and slick it back, I hate it being anything but smooth, then I added a ton of the cheapy hair spray, like aquanet. At the end of the night it was so stiff when you comb it, it would flake, but it would stay in place. I was usually in 3 or 4 numbers with several different hairpieces.

I would also use the small bobby pins and what I call pop barretts that were the same color as my hair. I am not even sure the still make those barretts, they were the best.

my daughter has thin hair and I have a really hard time getting it in a bun and staying. I took her to a hair salon to get it done and they taught me a trick that is great. She put it in a pony tail and then split the pony tail into 2 sections. she braided each section and then wrapped one around the pony tail in one way and pinned, then wrapped the other one the other way and pinned... it stayed perfectly!

Another fan of Got 2 Be Glued here. I start with wet hair and a little gel, slick into a low pony and spray. For fun we can add sparkle using a sparkle powder onto wet spray or there is sparkle hairspray too. The girls wear a low pony (part left) for everything except ballet. It's easy enough to put into a bun on the fly with a hairnet. Twist the ponytail into a bun, cover with the net and then twist the extra net around the bun a couple times, pin 3-4 times. The net hold in any whispies from layers.

You can usually find Got 2 Be Glued at Walgreens or Walmart.

I had trouble with buns staying in too..until one of the other gym moms told me her trick. She puts DDs hair in a pony tail, then braids or twists it into 3 or 4 sections, then wraps them around the base of the pony pinning them in. I have done this and the bun has lasted several days DD wanted to see how long it would last so slept in ti for a few nights once.
