"Dance Moms" on Lifetime

I have no problem understanding being ribbed because of being in a certain group. I mentioned soccer & hockey in particular because that's where some recent comments came from, completely out of left field, that were directed at me because they either knew my kids are dancers from past association or it came up at that time. I have seen soccer & hockey moms in rare form, but I know that doesn't apply to all. I have a dear friend who is a soccer mom. She's a wonderful friend. I love her. She's a complete nutter in all matters soccer. I cannot understand it or explain it. She's my friend. I love her dearly. I could never be a soccer mom with her. I am grateful I don't have to try and I get to keep my friend.

I'm not objecting because I'm overly sensitive about being teased or ribbed about something. I'm talking about a real shift in the perception of what it is to be involved with dance through a studio. An outsider hearing us busting each others' chops in our dance group might think we're being vicious with one another. It's all in good fun. Heck, the kids are in on it & we show them no mercy either.

Before the PC police swoop in, the youngest kids are now finishing middle school. We treat one another like family, love them all like they're family -- and take wisecracks right back from all of them like they're ours. If you were listening in you'd probably realize the kids have not been traumatized even a little bit by the smack talk -- because one of their favorite ways to pass the time is, oh, do you remember when we were at Jump and Mrs. Smith said X and then Mrs. Jones yelled for all of us to shut up or she was going to pee her pants if she laughed anymore?

And for the third time, I think that concern is unwarranted. I do not think that most people are that stupid. Some, yes. Most, no way. And the some that are that stupid, you don't want to deal with them so no great loss.

I absolutely could not stand the show when I first saw it. I thought it was disgusting. How it went from disgusting to a guilty pleasure I don't even know.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Cathy and Abby are friends. Abby requested that Cathy be on the show. Most of the time Cathy is smiling when she is fighting with Abby. I bet that almost 98% of this show is fake. Just like when Maddy fell last week, in the real video, she got right up and finished the dance.

:thumbsup2
If people believe that Dance Moms is real, do they think that people living in apartments are like The Real World and that all of those housewives are real too? Surely all girls are bad and "Friends" that work at low paying jobs live in large Greenwich Village apartments.

Yup and I know they misrepresent many of the results. Maddie and Chloe are shown to compete against each other and they are in completely different age levels. They have shown Chloe lose to Maddie when in reality , she won her division.

I do have to admit that the mom's at Candy Apples do seem more real and less dramatic. Actually Kendall's mom almost seemed out of place with them .
That could be a function of the show not being there constantly and priming the drama pump too. Or every single one of them could be in on the show's plot.
But, when I saw Cathy making fun of Abby's choreographer, I just thought "oh, yeah that is really mature".
Some of Cathy's mannerisms are hilarious. When she did her finger thing a few episodes ago. We were ROFL.
And the having her child and the little boy just running across the stage a time or two to keep her team in the younger division is just ridiculous. Maybe its just for the show, but I would be concerned if I was the mom of one of those older girls.
That was something I questioned when I saw it. I interpreted that they were entered only as part of the show's Cathy the cheating villain thing and not a genuine entry. But I could be wrong. I wouldn't think the contests would genuinely allow it. Everything I've ever participated in, it was cut and dry. Whatever age you are at a certain date, that's the age group you're in. I expect to see Cathy dancing carrying two babies as props in the Junior trio at some point with Abby jumping up and screaming "THOSE ARE DOLLS, THEY AREN'T REAL BABIES, THE CHEATER!!!!!

They could afford that apartment since it used to live to Monica's grandmother and the rent was low and never went up!! :rotfl:

I disagree. Business owners striving to maintain a successful business model don't breathe a sigh of relief at circumstances keeping paying customers walking through their doors. If I'm noticing a shift in attitude in a few social situations because of this show, I absolutely believe it's likely having an effect on attitudes in general and the business of operating dance studios in particular. People are frequently sheep, often not even understanding quite why they have certain opinions, a fact not lost on political campaigns.

To be clear, I am not moaning about the cracks made to me that I've referenced in this thread. I was surprised, but that's just life sometimes.

Again, thank you.

This show has had an affect on the way people think about dance studios, owners and instructors, unfortunately, and not in a positive way. Believe me, I'm a big part of the dance world.

Abby Lee and her entourage, including camera crew, recently showed up at a competition and were turned away by the directors of the competition. There were parents/owners/teachers in the background voicing their distaste by saying "if she was allowed they were pulling out and would not be back".

The loss of any potential or current client can turn out to be a great loss. As cabanafrau said:

I did not sign up to try to disspel rumors and myths about the dance world. I signed on to teach dance and pass along my love for it & the passion it can bring to someone's lives. My job is to teach, mentor, keeps kids involved in something they love and off the streets. I am teaching them about commitment and being part of a team. I am teaching them time management and how to succeed at everything they attempt.

I get phone calls, texts or e-mails weekly from parents asking how they should deal with their child in certain situations (not necessarily about dance). I had a sophomore student text & then call me a few weeks ago at 11 p.m. in the evening. I talked with her for 45 minutes about what is going on in her life and how she is struggling with things and decisions. I followed up the next morning to make sure she gets the help she needs. I sat down with a junior student at the beginning of the year who was cutting herself. I hugged her & told her everything would be OK. I followed up to make sure she gets the help she needs and she is no longer cutting. One student came to me telling me she had been fighting with her mom too much, especially over financial issues as she is trying to become financially independent. We came up with a budget together which she has been following.

They don't show those type of things on the show...........too boring, but THAT is reality.

My job is to give them a positive experience........regardless of the score at a competition. A show like this certainly makes my job more challenging as it in no way portrays the way a positive dance teacher and role model interact with her students.

The show was made for shock value with the public, so I guess it has accomplished what it set out to do. Unfortunately, at the expense of others.

Whew......I'm off my soapbox now!

Rent control-I always laughed when I'd see people who were unemployed as often as they were employed living in a large apt in the Village.
