Dance mom's are wack

I think most people know/have heard of hip hop, break dancing, popping & locking and even krumping as a dance style but "black" or african-american is not a dance style. African is a style, yes but Abby was calling it ethnic or african and IMO it was neither of those. Traditional African dance has actual moves and is beautiful. What Nia was doing would most likely be considered just street dancing but I wouldn't even classify it as dancing at all, like her mom said...she basically walked around the stage and worked her afro and costume.

My DD is mixed and I too was annoyed at the episode where abby had Nia wearing an afro and leopard print catsuit. Nia's natural hair would have been beautifully perfect for the "dance" regardless of what style Abby was trying to pass it off as.

I've been wondering about school as well. I can't remember which episode it was but Maddie said something among the lines of dancing from six to ten, and not getting home most nights until eleven forty five. It left me wondering when she had time to do homework or even sleep properly? I wonder if she's homeschooled.

Chloe did say she had a ton of homework in one episode.

One mother did say that they sometimes but dance before school but I can't remember who it was.

Didn't one of the mom's say the girls miss a ton of school?

I wonder how many of them attend private school. I don't think the public schools would be ok with the number of days they must miss.(funding, funding, funding) Private schools may be a bit more understanding.

I almost passed out when Holly said she pays 100k for Nia's school. If I paid that much, my kid would never miss a day.

Thanks for the history lesson, but I grew up doing those dances(not krumping) and it didn't cost my parents one dime for me to learn them. I didn't/don't know any kids that couldn't/can't do those dances.

That is just plain old dancing that eveyone I know grew up doing. It's like jumping double dutch. You didn't pay to learn it, you just went out and learned from the other kids on the block.

Yes, but I'm guessing Nia isn't walking outside and street dancing with the kids on the block. I think it has evolved into into a judged form of dance, even if it wasn't around 100 years ago. Most studios here offer at least hip-hop.

My dds' dance a jig, which, back in the day, was just a fun dance - I'm sure people weren't going for their jig lessons.

Really? We have a very good dance studio we've been to, and they have a great African dance program:

This is just a small section of their junior schedule. It is in a prominant, very diverse community.

Is this studio in Montclair? Do you go to a studio near there? We went to a studio in the totowa/little falls area and are now at a studio in Boonton.

My daughter took dance lessons for years. She did not go to competitions because her teacher did not believe in them. She wanted the kids to love dance and not to worry about competing. They did have recitals each year. The dances and the costumes were totally appropriate.

Not all dance teachers and dance moms are nuts any more than all stage moms beings nuts. There are those who are, but they are not the majority.

I I'm wondering if Vivi is a better dancer than we all think she is. If she's a bad as we all think, why would Cathy take her to the show down? It seems to me she would have her top dancers there to beat Abby's kids. Why take Vivi?? I think she may have hustled Abby to get an up close look at her dancers.

I could be wrong. Maybe Vivi really can't dance and Cathy is just a space cadet.

Wow. It's really a mess out there, isn't it?

The mom's are mad, the girls are sad, the teacher is nuts.

Almost makes Toddlers and Tiaras look sane. I saw it for the first time last night. The outfits. They dance to a song saying "I want to be your fantasy girl" as they strutted and bent over chairs they brought out to the stage. It was awful and completely inappropriate, flip to T&T and there's a 3 year old dressed up like the Pretty Woman hooker, complete with fake building to sautner around and hang out in front of.

What...in...the...heck.

So, all the dance mom's that were complaining on the last T&T thread about how inappropriate the outfits are and how the whole thing is so wrong. Um...yah. Got a glimpse of the Competition Dance thing, not pretty either. I'm not sure which is more disturbing.

All for the love of reality TV, right?

Is this a new reality show? Aside from catching the weather, I haven't really watched television for a couple of months now.. I just got sick of what was on - even ditched my soaps.. LOL.. Seems like no matter what I turned on, people were yelling at each other; creating family drama; backstabbing like crazy; spending huge sums of money on things they couldn't afford; etc.. Not really entertaining when you consider that most of this stuff is real..

Now you have me curious though and I might have to take at least one "look see".. When is it on - and what channel? Is it the same mom's and girls each episode - or do they change each time?

I was reading on the BB about some other new reality show that I haven't seen either - something about outrageous birthday parties for little kids or something?

When and if I get back to watch tv on a more regular basis, I think I'll stick with National Geographic; the History channel; reruns of "Little House On The Prairie" & "The Waltons"; and that sort of thing..

That one's called "Outrageous kids' parties", another show I always watch. I know it's on TLC, but I'm not sure when-I record all my shows, then watch so I can skip thru the commercials. I THINK it's on Wednesday, though. I can't believe the thousands of dollars they spend.

I'm not sure she meant it was all for Nia's education. I'm pretty sure the rest of Nia's family was shown briefly in one shot and there were several other children... And maybe she was including her grad school tuition, too. I think she said something like, "I pay $100,000 per year in private school tuition and you think I can't afford you?!" She didn't say "Nia's tuition." or maybe she was totally exaggerating.
