DAN doctors/alternative meds/vitamins

Okay, that's really funny... we have the Tropical Fruit liquid and DS takes it no problem. Okay, he does make a face, but he doesn't run away screaming.

However. We tried to hide it in his juice. And it affected the flavor of the juice (duh!) so he just wouldn't drink it. And we had a little "chat" with him and explained that the vitamins were in his juice and if he didn't want to drink the juice, we'd have to give him the vitamin in a squirter. (we now use a measuring spoon) And he decided that he would rather have it that way, to just get it over with, without the vitamin messing up his entire cup of juice and prolonging the nastiness. He always has a chaser when he's taking his morning meds anyway.

I see his logic.

That is awesome that he will take it and that he understands the concept behind why he has to take it. As I have read this thread its so "funny" to me...my child is the healthiest autistic kid you could ever meet. He has a "regular" gut, no skin problems, he never gets sick, has never been on antibiotics, etc. etc. However, I guess its a good thing he doesn't because he eats about 10 foods, and the idea of putting any kind of supplement, vitamin, ANYTHING in his mouth thats not on his "list" is virtually impossible. Its always something! :upsidedow

Okay, my first thought is to go to the compounding pharmacy and see if the pharmacist can somehow spin this stuff into something palatable. If not, then maybe the "chaser" method when she's a little older.

I took my DS with Classic Autism who is now 16 to an allergist when he was 2 years old because he always had a runny nose and a funny cough. He turned out to be allergic to all things with cow milk, soy, eggs, corn, and others. There were no DAN doctors back then. His symptoms cleared up within 2 weeks of starting an elimination diet for all things with cows milk, soy and corn syrup in them. All other foods we did a rotation diet with. He still is allergic to all things with cow milk, but can tolerate some foods with soy, egg and corn in it. The other foods he was allergic to he can now eat freely. Mostly he is a fruit and vegetable man but loves chicken tenders and hamburgers if they are from one of his favorite restaurants. Granted, our grocery bill has been higher than most people's because of the fresh fruit and vegetables, but we have managed. My son does take a multivitamin but only in a "gummy" form.

I am often astounded at what DAN doctors charge and the cost of their supplements. When there is no exact science behind their DAN diets and supplements, I can't see how they can get away with charging people so much. And when I hear stories about how people spend their life savings on unproven medical interventions and their children get no benefit from them I am truely angry. Just MHO. :cool2:
