Wow, people... it's all for fun.

If you are going to go to the World wearing a flower print tunic, and crew length black socks with sandals, then you are obviously in your own world of fashion.

Do you really care what someone on the internet says? I'd hope not...

I'm comfortable in my sense of fashion to know that I would never fall a victim to Dame Doris. But if I were to, then so be it.

Or maybe just spend more time thinking of something attractive to wear... You do know it is very possible to be well-dressed and comftorable at the same time!

But if you don't care about you attire, then apply that to all aspects and don't worry about a silly section of a website, or what a few people might say. It's all for fun and let's face it... It will at no point directly affect you.

Sit back and have a laugh, and if you don't want to see it, don't go to her section!

As I posted on another thread...."I had to quickly check the link and look through all the pictures to make sure they didn't look like me! :scared1:

(It's like TLC's 'what not to wear' - I'm always crushed when they toss 'my clothes' into the trash! - I will NEVER give up my 'scrunchies' not matter what they say! LONG LIVE SCRUNCHIES! :goodvibes )"

I'm always dressed for comfort on a family vacation - not a fashion show!

I guess I simply (as do so many who have already posted) to higher standards. I have never turned the other cheek when something was so blantantly wrong and I have no intention of doing so now.

Since when is laughing at and or making fun of other people right? Yes I will admit to whispering something to my husband or a close friend if I saw someone wearing something that was shocking..but I would NEVER EVER EVER stoop so low as to go out of my way to embarrass them. Posting those pics here on the Dis is as tasteless and classless as it would be if someone walked up and down Main Street USA purposely pointing out someone they thought had made a bad fashion choice.

OK so the intent wasn't to hurt people..but that could and probably has very clearly been the result of the action. Everyone makes mistakes. I am just amazed that this mistake hasn't been corrected yet.

The information that I find on the Dis is wonderful. This medium is wonderful. It is made up of terrific people and I truly enjoy spending a lot of my time here while I am planning a trip. But like I said.. I wouldn't stand on Main Street USA saying nothing while someone was clearing making fun of another human being and I can't just sit by and watch it happen here without saying something.

Shows on TV such as "what not to wear" don't set out to make people look bad.. they intend to help people look and feel better about themselves. Dame Doris does neither.

I do believe it was supposed to be all in fun but the comments are fairly carcastic! Sure the outfits may not be all that flattering, to be perfectly honest I've seen much, much worse, but why do the comments have to be so nasty!

Do you know what the odds are that someone in one of those pics will EVER stumble upon their pic on this website?

Let that sink in...

Imagine the TENS of THOUSANDS of people that go to WDW on a daily basis...
Now only a very small number of those (miniscual in proportion) get a pic taken of them and posted on this board.

Now, do you really think that person will not only:
1) Find this board
2) Find/Click on Dame Doris
3) Find THEIR picture
4) No it's them, and get insulted!

Pointing out and yelling something on Mainstreet WILL get their attention and hurt their feelings.

This is more like your "Wisper to your DH" except that the person would have to have AMAZING hearing to actually be affected by that...

The odds are slim...

I hope you are right.. but what were the odds of you finding this site? Or me finding this site? With over 60,000 registered members and the numbers increasing daily (due to the fact that this is an awesome and informative place to learn about disney) those odds are growing larger each time someone registers. Maybe the person themselves may not see thier pic, but it is still possible for a family member, an aquaintance, a co-worker to notice it and wonder.. gosh. could that be so and so. Doesn't he/she have that same outfit.. and then casually mention it to the one that was made fun of.

Maybe my point shouldn't be focused on the person actually seeing it. Instead it should be ... how right is it to number one post a picture of another person on the internet without thier consent and then do so in a demeaning manner?

I am a very tolerant person.. but I do still recognize right and wrong.

I am a very tolerant person.. but I do still recognize right and wrong.

Wow, amazingly enought I also have a consience and a sense of morality. It appears we have more in common than one would imagine.

BUT, the fact remains there are 60K registered on this site (which is a great site), which leaves quite a few MILLION that have gone to WDW and have never even seen this site... Let alone the 6 people that are currently listed by Dame Doris. And even those are are to come, the fact remains...

Plus, seeing as their is no faces (w/ the exception of the guitar player) you can not truely decipher who is who in the real world. Therefore no consent is needed, no photo-release forms, none of that.

I read lots of posts here where people make fun of the people they meet at WDW. You know ... the ones who don't know what FastPass is or who don't make PSs during Christmas week or who walk around Epcot looking for Splash Mountain. So there's plenty of ridicule going on already. Remember the poster who said that the most disgusting thing she'd ever seen was a "pooh-sized" family sitting on the curb eating turkey legs? Making fun of people has been on this board long before Dame Doris got here.

The thing that bothers me about Dame Doris is that the DIS webmasters sat and brainstormed and said, "OK ... how about a fashionista thing where we make fun of people who dress inappropriately?" and then didn't really set parameters. Many people have said that the clothes aren't that outrageous, and I agree. The "pants from outer space" seemed fine to me as vacation fashions. I would find them outrageous at, say, a funeral, but at WDW? Perfectly appropriate.

The other problem I see is comments like the one about being a redneck and having Cops filming in your neighborhood simply because you're wearing a beer shirt. Maybe I'm wearing the shirt because my dad won it at a baseball game, but I'm really from California and I'm a high school history teacher. I just know that if someone made the stereotypical assumption on some other thread that another poster was a "redneck" or something like that based simply on one piece of information, there'd be a moderator by to warn people against name-calling.

Finally, I think that the whole "fashionista" thing falls flat because you're making fun of someone without knowing the circumstances. Maybe the lady in the flowered pantsuit and not-matching purse doesn't HAVE another purse to carry. Maybe that pantsuit is something she bought specially to wear at WDW because this is her once-in-a-lifetime Disney trip. She wanted to look special and "springy" for the Flower & Garden Festival, and she's thrilled to be there. And then she comes back to someone telling her that she's on Dame Doris' sight being laughed at. And now that once-in-a-lifetime trip has this cruddy little ending. Here was this person, feeling like they had the time of their lives, until they discovered that they were being made fun of on an internet website. THAT's the biggest problem, in my opinion. Apparently Dame Doris thinks that the people she's taking pictures of and ridiculing on her site are never going to see them. But you don't know that. And if you don't have the nerve to walk up to a total stranger at the parks and say, "Oh my gosh ... what ARE you wearing," then I don't think a nom de plume, a website, and the guise of "all in fun" should give you permission to do it either.

:earsboy:

I voted "Yes".

I'm a snappy dresser, and others should dress more like me! God, where do those bad dressers think they are- on vacation?!?

I poke fun of course... it doesn't bother me, or my values, so I voted yes. That is all I can do.

:flower:

I voted that she should stay. Honestly, who cares? It's all for fun, so laugh about it or not and move on.

I didn't care for the article by Dame Doris. I wasn't that impressed. First, the sole purpose of it was to mock people. I've never been comfortable with that. And no, I don't watch things like Saturday Night Live, Jay Leno, or things of the sort. I just don't get amused by jokes that tend to be crude. It's not my preference. But that's just me...so personally, I find this in poor taste. I am uncomfortable with laughing at the expense of others. I've had it done to me through all of grade school and high school and it hurts...a lot. I've learned to never treat others in that same manner. I would hope that a website where threads are closed when people start to get too personal about heated issues with be consistant with ALL their aspects of this, not just posts. There needs to be an example set here...and all this is asking for is a disaster (and it's already started).

BUT, the fact remains there are 60K registered on this site (which is a great site), which leaves quite a few MILLION that have gone to WDW and have never even seen this site... Let alone the 6 people that are currently listed by Dame Doris. And even those are are to come, the fact remains...
Yes, but simply because a person may not find something, doesn't mean making fun of them is right. Not to mention that 60K is just the number of people who have *registered*...that doesn't even begin to count the number of people who visit/lurk that never bother to register (I was one for some time).

The thing that I'm curious about is the legality of this. Blurring out someone's face doesn't seem to be that great in my opinion. If someone found their picture on the site (blurred out or not) and they were never asked permission to utilize their likeness, they could have a very fair and legal complaint about it. In fact, for this reason, there are some websites that require the explicit permission of people in photographs if there is more than just the poster's likeness in the photo. They want to cover their behinds with it. Understandable...because I would dare say that most people don't want to see themselves treated in this manner. Is the DIS website prepared if a person comes across their photo (and they can prove its them) and they decide to take some action if their permission was never asked? Or has this "Dame Doris" asked each person for their permission to use their likeness in the manner she is doing? I understand that people will post vacation photos where others roaming may be in the shot, but how many of those people are using that photo to mock them? This is not done to build up anyone, but rather to tear people down for the sole purpose of getting a laugh. That's more my concern than my own personal preferences...because if it was solely based on my personal preferences, I would simply ignore Dame Doris as I do late night shows that mock people in the same way.

I would agree with other posters that maybe the APPROACH just wasn't very well thought out. I admit to looking in magazine for various do's and don'ts, but I think on this board, it would be MUCH more entertaining to see VERY outlandish things mentioned. You all know what I'm talking about. Those people that are obviously trying for a "stand-out" look. I think you could even post (of course with faces blurred) their pictures with funny phrases. Funny doesn't have to mean degrading - it could just be funny. All in all, I don't care whether it stays or not and it's not a matter of being offended by any means, just not my preference for time and energy spent in DIS time.

What I noticed and wondered about was the fact that she "seemed" not to realize until very recently that the DIS color was lime green. I've only been on here since December but I couldn't help but notice with the first day or two the "official" color of the website without even looking. I would like it better I think if the person writing such an article for the Dis was someone who was already in the "family" of DISers. Maybe she is, and if so, I'm sorry for saying that.

Again, I'm not offended by any of this, they can leave on here what they want. I just happened to think that was interesting. :confused3

After reading this thread, I just can't stop shaking my head. There are so many that have said some very mean things about Dame Doris. You sure felt like you could share your opinion about her, at a place where you know she will read it.

How is this new column any different from some of the stories we have all told and laughed about? What about all the complaining we have done about the parents with strollers? The kids who talk during a show? The people who abuse the use of wheelchairs? Nothing, except we do not have pictures.

I hope that Doris stays. I for one will read her articles and laugh. If I find myself in one of her pictures, I will laugh some more. If you do not like the idea of the fashion police articles, do not read them. It is as simple as that!

I voted definetly that it should go.... for the many reasons raised here... and I also have to agree with Mking624 about the legality... heck if it was me or someone I knew I would test the legality of it as hard as I could... and why not... it is your image/likeness being used without expressed consent not to mention the slander and I am sure a good lawyer would have a field day..

ITA. I'll be honest - I'm overweight, and I even cringe when I see pictures of myself during my vacation in some of my clothes. However, I then remember, "Yes, but I'll never see these people again." I wear shirts that are a bit snug and show my "rolls" but isn't that my business? Who has the right to say whether or not I should have purchased that shirt or had the AUDACITY to wear it in public.

I do have a problem with girls who wear shorts so short or shirts so low-cut that they leave nothing to the imagination. I saw a girl whose bottom was literally hanging out the bottom of her shorts. That is inappropriate. I don't make fun of that - I just wish she had more respect for herself and others than to wear it.

I don't think we should avoid making fun of people to set an example for our children; I think it's an issue of decency. Honestly, I would hope people would no more criticize perfect strangers enjoying WDW for what they wore than they would ostracize fellow Disney lovers for their beliefs. This type of thing just makes me sad.

I think it would be contrary to Walt's vision of creating a place where families can come to spend time together for us to ridicule one another for how we dress when there. I just think there's far better things to do with one's time than photograph people who one person believes have dressed poorly.

Bad taste all the way around. :sad2:

Wait until the first DISer sees themselves on there.

As legalities go...When I was at WDW last week during the 50th celebration, there were signs up stating that your likness might appear in print or video just from having purchased a ticket. I pretty much believe that if you're in public, and your face isn't used it's fair game if no one is profiting.
How many times do you see a news broadcast with people walking by with their heads cut off when a piece about obesity is on? Do you think those people were notified that they were being taped? Not a chance! I feel sorry for those people!
In WDW you know everyone near you has a camera, video camera, etc...
I have tons of people in my personal photos from WDW, and I'm sure I'm in other peoples as well. How could someone go to Disney World and not get caught on film in some form or another? What if I posted my personal WDW pics on a website? I've seen many photos people post here with others in the background without their faces blurred...that seems more liable to me.

Heck, I'd laugh even harder if my picture showed up.

Maybe there should be a sign-up sheet that says : "Ok Doris, I'll be there
x - y Take your best shot as I don't care what anyone else thinks about my clothing choice".

WD: we may disagree about your buddy 'Mike'....but God Bless you - the thoughts you've put forth here are why you are a wonderful Cast Member! :)
I couldn't agree more. :)

I voted to do away with the whole fashionista thing. Made me feel like we were all back in High School or Middle School. Ugh!

well they closed the other post about this so who wants to bet they close this one soon too..... nto going their way so.... takes bets
