Will someone familiar with the Daisy Girl Scouts clarify something for me please? I've tried looking online, but I'm not finding the same information as what the troop leader is saying.

Do the Daisy's still work towards their petal patches?

The troop leader says that the petal is done with and that they will only work towards regular badges. The petal is still being sold on the official site.

Also, the troop leader told us that the Daisy's used to work for pebbles. Several of us asked her to clarify this. We specifically said, "like little rocks" and she replied that yes, the Daisy's were given small pebbles as token, nothing on uniforms. She said this was done away with recently.

Just confused. This is my dd's first year in the scouts. It's the troop leaders' first year as well. Some things aren't making sense to me.

And what is the required uniform? In my GS days we had the vest or sash with council id, troop numbers, pins, etc. I did read that nowadays only the vest or sash (for the older groups) are required. My DH joked that without some type of patch / troop insignia, the little girls are going to look like they work at K-Mart.

I'm trying to find out, because the leader has said she doesn't know, yet she wants all the girls to have something within the month. She told me to order online whatever I wanted my daughter to have.

Welcome to the world of girl scouting. If you go to gs usa store you can order what you need. Depending on where you live your local council should have a store and you can go and purchase at the store.

My girl scouts only where the smock as daisies and the vest for brownies and junior scouts. Most of my parents buy them a t-shirt to wear on girl scout days.

Daisies still earn petals, when they are done with that there is a new program called journeys that they do. Daisies are kindergarten and 1st grade girls. It take about a year to do all the petals.

I have never heard or pebbles. So I don't know anything about that.

Have fun. I am off to pack for a very cold weekend of girl scout camping.

Thanks for the quick reply, madmom.

Everything I'm reading is that they should do petals first, then the journey badges. Every girl in this troop is kindergarten and brand new to girl scouting and they are starting off with the journey badges.

I don't want to be "that pita mom" but it really seems that this leader is confused and needs to do a bit more research. This issue is not the only head scratching thing she's said!

Plus, I want to buy my dd what she needs for now and for later.

Right now the petals and journeys are parallel programs. Petals can be done first then journeys, or vice versa.

I have been leading my dds troop for four years now. We started as daisies in K and never had the pebbles so "recently" must be a pretty loose term. LOL!!

Please remember that your leader is a volunteer and it can be a lot of work to start up a troop especially if she is new girl scouting. I know I was and it took time to learn - as a matter of fact I am still learning four years later.

You may be able to help her with the research and plan some of the meetings if youare concerned.

Like a pp said your GS store will be able to guide you through what to by. A basic list would include tunic (or vest), troop numbers, flag patch, insignia tab, WAGS pin, and Daisy pin. Your leader will tell you if you are wokring on petals or journeys and you can get those patches.

I haven't really looked at the new daisy stuff, but I know that some of the journeys for the older girls take a while to complete. This may be the case with the daisy journey. So she may be getting a head start.

All you really need is numbers, council set and flag for the daisy smock.

I agree with tink's mom you may want to volunteer with the troop. We can never have to many adults helping.

The Girl Scout Council is pushing for journey award patches to be done first by new troops. This is to help new troop leaders acclimate to leading as it is a pretty well structured program and easy for troop leaders to get a hang of the process.

Daisy Leader here.. and Junior Leader and Sum lol.

We are doing the petals the first year and will do one of the Journey books the second years of Daisies. There are 2 versions of the journeys. One cam out last year and one this year. Personally. I dont like the whole Journeys. My Juniors are not doing it. I think its a good idea to have something for the for the Daisies since it is now 2 years vs 1. But with the other age groups there is no need for it. The whole point of the petals is each petal helps teach them a part of the girl scout law.

For the uniforms, I went with the Tunic but did have one mom buy the daisy vest. It doesn't matter to me. As they got older (with my Junior troop) we always go with the vests instead of the sash. I have a very active troop and the filled up theirs vest when they were brownies.

I gave my moms a list of each item and the cost. You cant find it online at www.gsusa.org or at your local council shop. It came to $25 for the tunic, daisy pin, troop numbers, american flag and council ID. The insignia tap I believe is $2.25 but I bought the older felt verision for $.25 each and gave them to the parents. I am buying the petals out of the troop dues.

Also if you can spare the time ask the leader if she needs helps. She will need a fall product sales mom , a cookie mom, maybe a snack mom. Since she is new she might be overwhelmed.

I felt bad at my first meeting I handed out the fall sales forms. Its only for a short time period so I had no choice.

this lady needs a hearing check. It's been Daisy flower petals for many years and never rocks.

This is the 2nd year of the new 2 year Daisy program. Previously there was just the 1 year (Kindergarten) Daisy program and the petal program was a great way to introduce them to scouting. And the little smock with the daisy on the front was so cute. Now that it is a 2 year program, and there is more to it than just the petals, I would get the vest.

And do you know anyone else involved with scouting in your town? I'm not sure I'd trust info this leader gives out. Pebbles??:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Who knows what else she has mis-heard and taken as gospel.

I am slow today but I had to laugh at pebbles=petals!

What a huge mis-hearing! The poor girls who will get rocks...

All I know is that my mom was my troop leader and she knocked herself crazy making everyone happy in our troop. Can you become a the junior leader to assist the new lady?
