Daisy Girl Scout Leaders

I'm not sure if anyone needs but I ended up with an extra, still cellophane wrapped, Daisy Activity Book. If your troop is already using and you have a new girl or you just need for the coming year for a troop member, let me know. They are $8.25 listed through the GSUSA store but I will sell it for $7 shipped (via media mail) to get it to someone who can use....PM if you need, please, so I make sure to see your note and get back to you. :-) Thanks!

Hi, I'm starting to plan for next year. I know I want to do the Journey book - Daisies in the Flower Garden. Has anyone done this yet? I'm looking for ideas of activities to go along with this journey.

The Leader guide states that you should do a mini garden as a team project. To me, this is just not practical. I think I'm going to let each girl do their own mini garden. Someone told me that last year at Wal-mart - there was some mini garden kits that you could buy. I'm going to look for something like that and give one to each girl - we can plant the seeds at the meeting, but then they each bring it home and they can report on the progress at future meetings. Did anyone do something like this?

Thanks.

Hi Kelly,
I did this journey along with my troop over the past year. We've completed the first 2 pieces but I left the final one to be earned at the end of our 2nd year. Although not the most practical, we did do a mini troop garden last year. At our first meeting, I bought the color-a-pots from the craft store and one of the insert had bumblebees and flowers on it, similar to the patches they earn in the journey, so I had each of the girls put their name on it and then they colored them in and put them in the outer rim of the pot. That way, everyone knew which flower pot they planted. We got soil and had them plant and water marigold seeds, and one of the parents volunteered to tend the mini-garden for the troop between meetings. Each meeting (including the 1st, so 2 additional meetings after that for a total of 3...went from Sept to early Nov for us....), the parent brought it back and we had the girls water it all together at the meeting. At the 3rd meeting, they earned the first part of their journey and each of them took home their flower. We were reading the journey book as well through this process (though I will say the only negative on my end of year form was that one of the girls wrote "the book was a little boring").

Then, coupling the journey with our cookie sales "service" goal, we got permission from a local historic house to clear out their garden bed and purchase & plant perennials and a few annuals to make up a garden for them on the site. This was the girls' big service project this year plus it earned them the 2nd part of the journey.

Since the final part of the journey has to do with living the law, I felt since we only did 5 of the 10 petals so far, it was pre-emptive to have them earn it before we finished going over all of the parts of the law and earning their petals, so it will be one of the final pieces they get this year.

Hope that helps a bit, and good luck! :)

I'm planning to do the Daisy Flower Garden Journey, also. I am thinking about just planting some oxalis (clover) bulbs like these:

http://www.willowcreekgardens.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=188

We'll plant them in used yogurt containers and that will earn the girls their Use Resources Wisely (Clover) petal, too. Oxalis are supposed to be easy to grow and bloom in a very short time. We may not plant them until chapter 4 in the Journey book, when Clover is mentioned. We may also plant some pansies somewhere at the church where we meet to earn their Journey awards. Why aren't any of the Journey flowers winter blooming flowers? Whoever wrote the Journey book activities was not taking into consideration that most Girl Scout troops don't meet regularly in the summer.

I'm just don't feel very confident about planting seeds in the fall, and I live in central Alabama. The seeds will probably sprout, but keeping them alive all winter until it is time to plant them outside in the spring sounds doubtful, not to mention, a real pain.

Hey Ladies!! I'm gearing up for the year! We have some great activities planned already! Here is the help I need!!

I need ideas!! This is the 100th year of Girl Scouts. So the girls are being encouraged to do 100 acts of charity. So what are some ideas?? Keep in mind that they are 6 and there are 12 of them... so that means the troop needs to do 1200 acts of charity to get their badges. I was thinking 100 cans of veggies each to the food bank... but that seems pretty BTDT. So I'm looking for something original!

Is anyone else planning to do this year long activity with the girls??

Here is what we did for a mini garden: http://www.amazon.com/Crayola-Pop-Pixies-Herb-Garden/dp/B003WRNLJ0

I know they aren't flowers... but the girls still loved it. I transported it back and forth and we looked at the progress each week and talked about what it takes to make your plants grow.

Oh, I havent' heard of this 100 acts yet but I like the idea! I was thinking about this a bit and here is what I'm proposing to my co-leader...she may have other ideas, too. I think we'll try to break up the 100 acts into 5 -- 20 each.

20 canned goods
20 Christmas cards for seniors (we work with a senior center in our area)
20 Valentines cards for seniors
$20 for SHARE or other charity (for those who can't afford maybe we'll take from our cookie money but I don't think $20 would hurt anyone.)

I think for the final 20 we'll leave it up to each individual girl. Some may want to do 20 hours of volunteer work; others may want to donate 20 items of clothing or toys to give away; and who knows what else they'll think of?

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, SueEllen!!:goodvibes

Cute herb garden idea.

I hadn't heard of that 100 acts of charity but love the idea and will try to work it into our plans for the year!!!

Working on 2 + field trips for the fall and getting Sept-Dec plans finalized (I have some ideas, need to check with my assistant leader)

...$20 for SHARE or other charity (for those who can't afford maybe we'll take from our cookie money but I don't think $20 would hurt anyone.)...

Great ideas, but I would change this one. In this economy, $20 may hurt - you just don't know. And to single out those who can't afford it may be embarassing for them or their family. Maybe they can raise $20 by collecting $1 from 20 people for a specific charity.

Some other ideas: 20 cards for Veteran's Day, to soldiers currently overseas or veterans; 20 items for an animal shelter, such as pet food or old blankets/towels; homeless shelter; kids in the foster care system; lots of people to help by just asking what they might need.

I'm thinking for the 100 acts of charity, you can have each girl lead a project and they all work on it together. So, like one girl would have the canned goods project - she needs to collect 100 veggie cans - but the whole troop will help get donations. Then another girl could collect 100 books to be donated and another girl could do 100 cards (with the whole troop helping make the cards) - and so on. So, you with 6 girls you would need 6 ideas and you can work on one a month.

Our SU pushes us to great contribute $25 from each girl for SHARE, so if I only suggest the $20, it'll actually be less than last year. And no one complained at all last year, so I'm really not expecting anyone to this year either.

However, I also like the idea of having a list of 8-10 different things the girls can do and then they can choose 5 of them. That way, if money is an issue, they can just not choose to do that. Or if they really hate making cards, (I have one non-crafty girl), then she can choose other things instead.

Thanks for the ideas!

I think I mis-used the work Charity... our SU used the term community service... one and the same? Not sure. Here is the link to our PDF.

http://girlscoutsofmaine.org/activities/patch_programs/centennial_patch.pdf

So here is what we have on our agenda (so far) for the fall:

Apple Picking/Hayride
Cornfield Maze
Juliette Low birthday party
Food Pantry visit
Police Station visit

I also asked my moms if anyone would be interested in becoming a trained adult to help us be able to do more field trips and I got FIVE moms to volunteer! Woot! Help! I love it. We have the best moms!

Awesome on the 5 moms!

Last year I just asked each mom to do the training and they did. This year we get 2 new moms and I'm just going to ask them to do it as well. It came it handy last year when both me and my co-leader were unable to attend an event. The girls could still go b/c we had certified volunteers.

We have ten girls in our troop who will be first grade Daisies this year. Nine are coming back from last year. One scout is moving so we are permitting one new girl to join the troop.

I just went through the "3 Cheers for Animals" journey book and wrote out a tentative meeting schedule for this fall.

We are planning on meeting after school every other week for 1 1/2 hours, plus having one Saturday field trip each month. By "field trips" I mean a parent brings the girl (and the whole family if desired) to a location other than the school. We are looking at doing a Beach Sweep cleanup and a trip to a local wolf preserve. We are also contemplating doing an overnight stay at the zoo about 2 hours away, but it requires 24 participants and so we'd have to go in with a few other troops to make up those numbers and it may be too difficult and stressful to get organized. I don't know. It would sure be fun though!

I am also checking with the local high school Beta club to see in any of their members would like to come volunteer to assist my co-leader and I with our meetings. The extra set of hands would be nice since we often have that "herding cats" feel to the group!

Looking forward to seeing what other troops do with the Animals journey. :dog:

We have our training for the Girls Guide and Fall Product Sale this Sunday. I am looking forward to it, but I think I may be disappointed. The email I received said about 100 leaders had signed up for it. That sounds like to many to ask questions and review materials.

Let me know what other councils are doing as far as training.

Rae

P.S. We have several fun council activities coming up in October that I am looking forward to, also. One is called the Scooby Doo Kamp Kaper and we have a big celebration on October 29th for JGL's birthday.

No formal training announced yet for our SU. They won't get the guide books in until September so we'll have to wait until then to look at them. Right now we are not planning to purchase the books but may start them in January instead.

We have two big events coming up. Oct 29 is a fall festival and Oct 30 is a GS sing-along. It'll be a busy weekend.

I have volunteered to lead our SU in the 100 Acts of Charity. I came up with a first draft of the flier and once approved, we'll introduce that at our Sept SU meeting. My SU leaders hadn't heard about it yet so don't know if it's a local thing or will be national, but they loved the idea so we're going to go with it!:goodvibes

Hi, I wanted to share with everyone a great website I found. It is colortime.com

They have Girl Scout T-shirts, pillowcases, tote bags, backpacks and bandanas that you can color with fabric markers. They also have some for holidays and such. :cool1:

I think I'm going to do the Girl Scout T-shirt at our 2nd meeting and then the girls can wear them to future GS events. I'm also thinking about getting the Halloween tote bags to do in October. For the meeting the week of Halloween, I plan on bringing a big bag of candy and have the girls earn the Honest and Fair petal by having to equally (fairly) divide the candy amongst themselves and then they can take their share home in the Halloween bag that they decorated.

Thanks.

Kelly
