Dad punches teacher for innapropriate behavior!!

I live in Bradenton. Lakewood Ranch high school, was my high school rival.

I dont know anyone involved. but its neat to have a story with my town in it!

And now for my opinion:

The man did not MOLEST the girl. I think the Father was out of line. As a teacher he shouldnt touch or comment on anything sexual about a student. But neither should passerbys on the street. So next time Im on my knees at publix, grabbing a can off the shelf, and man walks by me and tells me "i like to see a girl on her knees" I'll make sure to call my Dad so he can knock him out. (that actually happened to me - ew)

-Out of line you cant take the law into your own hands. Especially with no evidence, other than your daughter's words.

And FYI - Lakewood Ranch the community is full of all the Richest people in Bradenton. *most* of the kids who go to lakewood ranch expect things to handed to them, and paid for by their parents. From what I hear from people I know who go to the school, this girl wasnt Ms. Innocent and she was quite the attention seeker. And the teacher was a friendly joking around kind of teacher, who not only let you call him by his first name, but would let you skip school, as long as your brought him some fast food. Every high school has one of these teachers, and every high school has some girl seeking attention.

I flirted with my teachers. (trust me it didnt influence my grades :-/) There was always sexual banter going on between the students and some of those 'friendly' teachers. (espcially at Marching band practice) And if your THONG is hanging out of your pants, i know some teachers who would have commented on it. And would have thought nothing of it. Because we had somewhat of a personal relationship with these teachers....

Just my two cents...

My very first reaction to reading that story was NO WAY was the dad right to go punch the aide. No Way!

It must be a scary thing to work with kids nowdays. All a kid has to do is take a dislike to you and they know exactly how to bring you down.

In the fall, my DH was outside and caught the neighbor boys doing drugs. He called them on it and told the one visitor to go home. He went home all right and told his family that my DH attacked him. The dad shows up swinging - the BIG brother shows up...the POLICE show up. It was truly frightening.

Sorry, but some kids know the power they hold just by being kids. I always say...kids are people too. And some people are jerks.

Um...maybe. But that's all very inappropriate. IMO.

Not, I repeat NOT, saying this is the situation here. But one of my biggest fears for dh (a hs public school teacher) is that a girl will make something like this up. It happens. I KNOW it happens...I just advise DH to NEVER NEVER be alone in his room with a student, esp a female student, and esp with the door shut. IF the conversation is one on one with a student, to make a point of opening the door, and stay on opposite sidess of the desk. Man, I sort of wish they had security cameras in the classrooms so that he could prove his innocence if an accusation DID ever happen! (DH, I mean).

.

I know how you feel. My DH is a teacher too and I always worry about that. The worst situation was when he was coaching and after an indoor track meet, they got back to the school and two kids were still there at 9:30 P.M. and they couldn't get a hold of their parents for nearly an hour. One of the kids was a girl.

Since it was a freezing January night, they were outside as the school was locked, and it was so late - DH finally said "we'll drive them home". He had the assistant coach (a younger male) drive the boy student home, and he took the girl. Everything turned out fine fortunately. Yeah, it was a big risk...but sometimes you take them. I told him to call me and I would have come to the school to drive the girl home, but I was home with a newborn and he didn't want me to go through all that.

And you are repeating gossip about this young lady. That is wrong. Gossip, false accusations destroy reputations, careers, lives.

I'm just going to chime in and say that teachers have to be cautious of both sexes. I am a female who was accused by female student of sexual misconduct. My high school "investigated" her claims for two weeks before I was even notified. Lucky for me, the girl decided she may have been "dreaming" that I kissed and fondled her in my classroom.

This girl had been my student the year before. For whatever reason, she returned the next school year with this story. I had never been alone with this student. After she decided she "dreamed" up this story, the investigation ended. She was supposed to get professional help.

I was in my first trimester when all of this happened. Luckily, the stress did not affect my pregnancy, and I took maternity leave in April and decided to be a SAHM. I may return to teaching someday (we're expecting our second child in July), but I doubt I will ever return to that school.

The point is that apparently no misconduct happened in this case and the father acted foolishly. Maybe innocent until proven guilty only applies in court cases but perhaps that philosophy should be applied by the public too. At least until the truth comes out.

OMG I found this in the Bradenton newspaper!!!Swafford's daughter was in the in-school suspension program for pouring Coke on a classmate last week.

On Wednesday, Swafford's daughter went home early from school after a group of girls harassed her, according to the daughter.

Prior to being hired at Lakewood Ranch High in 2002, Mathis was a counselor with the Department of Children and Families from 1996 to 1999. He worked at Daughtrey Elementary School from August 1999 to October 1999, and he also worked at Manatee Palms, a mental health facility for juveniles, in 2003, but was terminated, according to court records.

Mathis was fired by Manatee Palms officials Sept. 10, 2003. Following his termination, he damaged numerous doors in the building, confronted another employee and was charged with criminal mischief, a first-degree misdemeanor for which a judge later withheld adjudication, according to court records.

Swafford has been arrested on four different occasions over the past 20 years on charges including battery, disorderly conduct, resisting without violence and obstruction. All charges were dropped except a 1991 disorderly conduct and obstruction charge for which he was sentenced to community service and probation, according to court records.

If convicted of the battery on a school employee charge, Swafford faces up to five years in prison. An arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Swafford said it doesn't matter to him whether he's convicted.

"I don't care about the charges. I just want to make sure he (Mathis) never teaches again, not here, not anywhere. School is the only place your child goes where you can't protect them. Teachers are supposed to be special and love the kids, not harm them."

Swafford's 69-year-old Bradenton father, James, was arrested in 1999 and charged with a lewd and lascivious act on a child under 16 years of age, according to court records.

David Swafford says his dad made a bad call, but claims that the girl was willing.

"He should have pleaded not guilty, but he didn't. He didn't know what he was getting himself into by pleading guilty. He lost his business and had to beg my mom to stay with him," he said.

James R. Swafford was convicted and received two years of community control and 13 years of probation, which ends in 2016. A six-year prison sentence was suspended, but if he violates probation he would automatically be forced to serve the sentence, according to Clerk of Circuit Court officials.

David Swafford said he "smacked" his dad for what the charge did to his mother, but there are two different types of predators

EVERYBODY involved in this is a COMPLETE freak!

I heard this also. Very messed up situation. And I am sorry but two wrongs don't make a right.

The Dad is now in jail facing crimial charges and the Teacher is still free to roam around. There are different steps this father could have taken to make sure the teacher didn't teach again. He can't do that from jail. It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the end.

If the teacher did as accused than he should be punished, but not by the father, but by the COURTS!!!

Sorry this happened to you; and you're right ALL teachers need to protect themselves. This is just one more thing that adds to good teachers leaving the profession.

Yep, my DH is a public highschool teacher and I have drilled that into his head as well.

My first tendency is to always believe the child in cases like these, however I seen too many mentally unbalanced teenagers who would make false allegations just to get attention. It's sad on all sides, but male teachers really do need to protect themselves.

Sad but true. There was a case here in Georgia last summer where two teens(boy & girl) accused a teacher of making them have sex in front of him. Of course, he was removed from the school and a long investigation took place. He maintained his innocence throughout. It went to trial. The kids didn't back down until the bitter end, when they finally admitted that THEY WERE MAD AT THE TEACHER. Apparently he caught them making out at a school function and made them return to the rest of the students. They decided to "show him" by charging him with sexual abuse. The teacher was acquitted, but the damage was done. Charges of sexual misconduct can affect you for therest of your life, whether they are true or not. This trial went on for months and completely ruined this man.

Innocent until proven guilty doesn't mean a thing when a teenage girl is pointing a finger at you. :sad2:

Did you miss the part where it states that the teacher didn't do anything or do you think that he shouldn't be able to teach b/c he'd been accused of it?

violence never solves anything

Actually, it does. If violence never solves anything how can you explain the outcome of the War of Northern Aggression (Civil War), WWI, and WWII.

I won't say the resorting to violence is the best choice, and it probably wasn't in this instance, but sometimes violence is necessary.

I have an idea, why don't we wait until the facts come out before we pile on the dad, the daughter, or the teachers aide. At this point we don't really know much.

um greenyskp...the funny thing about everyone thinking that Lakewood Ranch is full of the "richest" people is not entirely true, sure they have a lot of them but don't forget about all the Myakka people that go there as well...that's what's so funny about LWR thinking they are such a hot little town. There are still lots of rednecks around there.

Now, this morning this father was on the local radio station. he said his daughter was being held in a classroom (like detention) for throwing a coke on someone. He said I am not saying she's an angel but that the teacher locked the door and her thong must have been showing above her pants and the teacher snapped it.

The father also stated that when he asked his daughter to take him to the teacher - the father asked the teacher to come to the meeting and the teacher kicked his feet up on the desk and put his hands behind his head and smirked....

Not that what the father did was right but considering his history it seems as no suprise.

It does seem that the school knew about the allegations or whatnot - I see no reason for an aide especially one that is being accused to NOT be in the meeting.

The OP posted a news story. You posted something to the effect...from what I hear...

That is gossip, about a child nonetheless, that you do not know. Gossip, plain and simple. Like I said, gossip destroys reputations, careers and lives, plain and simple.

Just the OP checking in here, I'm late getting on the boards this morning!
First of all, after reading all the new info I'm getting the idea that everyone involved would be a great candidate for the Jerry Springer Show. Aside from that, if the above story IS true and it had happened to me.....I would have reacted the same way. Both sides are now coming forward with their version of the story but so far it's just each side telling their version of the events. This will be one to follow to see what the actual "evidence" adds up to.
I'm still amazed how we've looked at this from complete different views, I automatically thought the teacher was guilty and many others thought the girl was lying. I guess our backgrounds, etc put us at odds on this one. I guess it just shows us all that waiting for the actual evidence is usually the best thing. :scratchin

also - we all know the media only report the truth......

cindy - I heard the father's side and am waiting to see if the teacher makes a comment. As of early this morning I guess he wasn't talking. Haven't seen the news since then.
