Dad is Diabetic

More so a type 1 then type 2. It sounds as though her father is type 2. It has been my experience that type 2's are less likely to eat correctly or monitor their blood sugars enough. So, if he is set in his ways and feels that SF is the way to go; when clearly it is not there is nothing we can do to change those facts.

I for one feel boosted that so many people were taking carb counts and blood sugars run lower with exercise. I have 2 type 1 kids and very rarely do you find people even begin to understand what is the best route for a diabetic.

Couldn't agree more about type 1 versus type 2. My type 2 DH isn't nearly as diligent in his own care as he and I are about our type 1 son.

However, it wasn't clear to me from the OP if it was her father who insisted on SF or if she was just trying to be helpful and assumed as many do that SF would be the best for him. He could be a brand new type 2 as well.

I suspect you're not diabetic nor have anyone close to you who is. It's not something about which someone should "lighten up." And managing it at WDW can be a real challenge. Every other poster has done their best to give good advice that might help the OP's father.

I think we all agree that it is great of her to be concerned. That's why we all tried to help with our experiences.:goodvibes

Guess again, I am insulin dependent diabetic and so is my father. I am all to familiar with the problems of SF things having more carbs than the regular versions.

Okay, I don't want to jump into the fray of how to manage your diabetes (I'm a type 2), but when dining out I do use SF foods as a guide.

Another good SF option is the SF cheesecake at BOMA. You'll have to ask either your server or one of the chefs behind the dessert pod to get it for you. It's served with a SF mango sauce, no artificial sweeteners, and is very low-carb. Also, if you tell your server, they will arrange for a chef to take you around the pods to guide you through their diabetic/low-carb offerings and will offer to modify dishes to suit you. Chef Carlos was my great guide a couple of years back and his advice is still valuable. BOMA has always been our favorite buffet at WDW and is even more so now.

I've also found this helpfulness at many of the WDW restaurants. I've had many diabetic dishes and desserts specially prepared. Just let your servers know when you check in for your table.

I find the fruit at WDW to be amazingly tasteless, I wouldn't waste the carbs.

However, you can watch your diabetic diet at WDW and eat your cake too. :thumbsup2
