I am so bummed! My Nikon D80 decided today, after 4 years, it would have an err message. Doesn't it know it is supposed to be going to a family reunion on July 7, my grandfather's 100th birhday on July 10 and to Arizona in 5 weeks to bring my babyDD to the University of Az? The shutter sounds sickly:sick: and only 1 out of every 5 or so clicks results in an image:(

Wow, that stinks! Is it still under any warranty? I lucked out a few years ago when my Minolta 35mm SLR died 4 yrs to the day I purchased it with a 4 yr Best Buy extended warranty...I ended up with a brand new camera..better than the one I had. Hoping some of that luck comes your way. If not, what a great excuse to get a new camera:)

What error message? Never know, it could be something simple wonking you up. When the contacts on one of my lenses got dirty it made my camera hang like the shutter wouldn't fire (it wouldn't register the focus). I cleaned them and all was good. Not saying that's what's going on here, but sometimes there are simple solutions for seemingly complex problems.

I agree - check it out first. Use google if necessary :rotfl:
My D90 gives error messages for a number of reasons, some of which I have programmed it to do by way of an alert and others which it just does if there is a problem.

Anything from no SD card, a corrupt memory card, lens not properly fitted ..... all these and more will bring up an error message and lock the shutter button from firing. Hopefully it's something small like this.

It isn't under warranty, unfortunately:(
Its an ERR message. My manual says its a shutter malfunction, I can hear that it doesn't sound right. I tried a fresh battery, new sd card, different lense, reset the factory settings.

Do you have an authorized camera repair center nearby? Could you see if they could do an emergency quote and repair, explaining your situation?

It could still be something simple like dirt causing the shutter to stick (which is a cheap and common repair) or it could be something a lot more complicated. But you won't know unless you have it checked out.

I say buy a new one then send the other in for diagnosis. You won't need a kit lens this time, so that will help. If it's a cheap repair, do it and keep it as a spare. Life gets much better with a second camera. Takes all the stress out of situations like this. And besides, it's much more fun to spend someone else's money!

Seriously though. I kept my Xsi when I bought my T2i. It's so nice knowing I have a backup on hand. When I decided to send my T2i in with some lenses for calibration, I didn't miss a beat.

B&H Photo is great and could have a camera in your hands in a couple days with express shipping. (See? Still spending more of your money......)

Good luck!

I like the way you think! ;)

I am liking that new camera talk too! But honestly I am hoping its something as simple as photo chick said, just a bit of dirt gumming it up. Of course, I will buy a new body if necessary but with one kid having just graduated college and the other starting college(almost clear across the country!) in Aug. I really don't want to spend $$ on a new camera, though I have already checked out prices on the D7000, just in case;)
