What the heck is it and is it worth joining or will it just flood my mailboxes?

D23 is Disney's official fan club. Depending on the level you join will determine what you receive from the club.
I haven't investigated the free option that just opened up to everyone recently. There is also a Silver and Gold membership.
The gold membership will send you thier magazine 4 times per year, a small keepsake, a calendar, and discounts to various disney events (primarily in Disneyland). There are a few events at Disneyworld. From what i remember, the Silver membership does not include the magazines. If i get an opportunity, i'll post a link with more information.

I am a first day charter gold member and have made it to several events. The events have been priceless, seeing old guard Imagineers as well as newer ones, hearing strories about all things Disney from those who create it, hearing John Lasseter talk several times (and meeting him too!), the Pixar teams, the Disney teams, music by Dick Van Dyke, Richard Sherman, Alan Menken, seeing Carsland before it opened, watching a mock up of the Black Pearl rise up from a cloud of smoke and seeing Johnny Depp step out at Captain Jack and so much more. Yes, events are more often than not in the LA region (makes sense, right?) but they are making great efforts to have events country wide. The club provides Disney opportunites no one else can.
