This weekend we spent some time at the parks and since it was our last trip to DHS before our passes expire, I spent some time slowing going through the Walt Disney: One Mans Dream exhibit at DHS one last time. I have been fascinated with Walt Disney since I was about 10 and enjoy all the history but was upset at the latest addition to the exhibit. D23.

There is a office looking scene set up with all types of D23 stuff on the desk walls, even a D23 bag hanging on the back of the office chair. It is in the last room of the exhibit before you enter the movie and it is behind glass.

I noticed it as I was entering the movie and had to snap pictures fast so they are not as good and extensive as I would have taken if I had more time but it is an idea. If we did not have an ADR I would have stayed longer.

I don't want to replay any debates about D23 that have already played out here, but IMHO this does NOT belong in a exhibit named Walt Disney: One Mans Dream. The exhibit is about his life, work in animation and television, and the theme parks he began. A club that basically allows you to purchase merchandise and provides a NON exclusive magazine does NOT belong. IMHO Disney has stooped to a new level.

NO where else in the exhibit does it push "clubs" you can buy into such as DVC, or the Disney limited edition figurines ect....... Why is this relevant to Walt Disney's life and work?????

Oh and the last picture is of the HUGE sign as you exit the movie. Nice, huh?

Ohhh my. Not good. Seems tacky.

I forsee a poo poo storm brewing over this.

ITA! I think there would be better places for a D23 ad. I do understand the thought process behind it. I am sure their target audience for the club is interested in Walt history, but it puts me off because it comes across as inappropriate and pushy.

Yep! I am suprised that they don't dump you out of the movie into a store with wall to wall magazines and people ready to sign you up as a member! :cool2:

Isn't THAT the Disney way these days????

I have to say, this isn't a big deal to me. A bit tacky maybe, but it's not really a bad place to advertise D23, better than the lobby of TOT or something. D23 is afterall for Disney history fans. And seriously...how many people really do the One Man's Dream attraction? I personally LOVE it, but I don't think I have ever been in there with more than 10 other people and several times I've been the only one in there...which to me is sad, but for those who do check out One Man's Dream, they might appreciate knowing about D23.

Okay...this is going to be angry....no hard feelings to anyone and not looking to debate (lol)

THIS TICKS ME OFF and makes me feel all sorts of inappropriate emotions that I can't post here!!!!!

I personally really enjoy the exhibit because I'm OBSESSED with finding everything out about Walt that I can and it's really cool to see some of the actual objects I've been reading about for years.

But THIS is just pushy. They HAVE to know the response that this "club" has received, but putting in an exhibit like that, knowing that a majority of people visiting there are probably people who are Disney history buffs just proves even more to me that this club is CATERED to only one portion of their fan base, and completely insults EVEN MORE the people who are a different kind of fan, like a theme park fan, which is the majority of the people who are in your park ANYWAY!

It's pushy sales. I have already spent tons of money to be in your park, eat your food, and buy all your stuff that I could probably get at a local Walmart for way less.....QUIT PUSHING ME TO GIVE YOU MORE OF MY MONEY! And if you're gonna push, they could at least do it in a more subtle way.

Okay. Venting over. AGAIN---not meant to offend anyone or anything, just my honest thoughts on seeing this in the exhibit.

Ugh. I suppose I can see where they figure this 'fits' (even though I disagree), and I guess the little items aren't too offensive. The banner screams tacky, though.

This whole D23 debacle has been such a turn-off. :sad2:

Everything in this display is part of the Disney Achieves, exactly what D23 is and only is. If you want to know more of the Disney Achieves, D23 is it.:thumbsup2

This is pretty calm compared to DVC kiosks in WDW and DL. There is no more PUSHY than having DVC in the theme parks!!!

That's why D23 has left such a bad taste in my mouth. They keep saying they are giving something back to the fans. Yeah, for a $75 price tag.

totally agree with you.

and with you! lol

I don't see this as an issue. D23 as of right now is about the archives and history, and One Man's Dream is about the history and has a lot of props and displays that are most likely from the archives.

If there was D23 signage in ride queues ruining the themeing I would hate it, but this seems a logical place to put it.

Like everything D23 this will turn into a debate but I don't see it as inappropriate. There is a whole section of the exhibit that has the original concept art and diagrams of Walt Disney World that was shown off on the Wide World of Disney. That was just as much about marketing as the D23 display IMO.

What is that bag supposed to be? You don't think that'll be the special gift people get for $75?

+1, Well said.

The online fan community is now part of Disney history. It is nice to see Disney recognize that community. I feel fine about D23. It is a take it or leave it kind of thing and I don't feel it ruins my experience at the attraction.

I can understand the criticism better now. This makes it look a lot more like a marketing gimmick than a fan, history, archives site.

Mentioning the site... "for more information and articles, read more about it" would have been fine. instead, they went with product marketing, let's advertise more stuff.

Heheheheh...not to look an expensive gift horse in the mouth or anything, but to actually get anything more than the upfront items (the 4 magazines a year, the 'free' gift, the *framed* 'OFFICIAL DISNEY FAN' certificate, etc.) it will cost more than $75 :yay:

agnes!
PS - I want to see that $800 pen too.

I don't know about all magazines, but the magazines I subscribe to give you a nice discount for subscribing. Half off newsstand price or more. So if the D23 magazine is $16 at Barnes and Nobles, subscribers should be getting it for $8, so really the magazine should only be $32 of the $75 for members, then say a buck for the certificate and even at $20 for the lithograph, that still just comes to $53.

I thought I missed something so I read the description of D23 from this again and browsed around the website looking at all the articles: http://d23.disney.go.com/articles/031009_NF_FS_MadeForYouAndMe.html

I don't see how "D23 is and only is" about the archives...... The Disney archives are not even mentioned until the last paragraph of the article:

Last paragraph:

D23 community members — or anyone else for that matter — can head to this Web site for behind-the-scenes features, up-to-the-minute Disney news and the latest news from insiders from every part of the Company. The site builds on the content of twenty-three magazine by publishing behind-the-scenes features and interviews with Disney stars of today and from the past, the latest celebrity images and breaking news fromevery part of Disney. There's also member-exclusive merchandise at Boutique 23, and even more exciting, this online experience will, for the first time ever, open the Walt Disney Archives to fans, sharing stories and treasures that previously only Disney employees and Cast Members could access.

Anyone can read the info posted on the D23 site, it even says so LOL.......to me this is very much the same as the old Disney Insider emails i use to get that had stuff about Disney history and the archives and have the Ask Dave section....... have reinvented that into D23?

Notice how the member exclusive merchandise is mentioned before the Archives are??????

In the 4th paragraph you are told all about the features of D23 and the archives are not even mentioned unless you count a line of collectible inspired by them:

Members will also receive a special gift from the Walt Disney Archives Collection, a new line of merchandise created especially for D23.

I a am not trying to debate or argue D23 but I still stand by my opinion that this does not belong in the One Man's Dream exhibit. JMHO:confused3

If i may ask those that are members, what kind of "insider" archive info are the D23 members getting that is in addition to that on the website the general public can read????
