D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

Thanks! I was thinking about Kathy all week and hoping that Mark's surgery went well. I'm so glad that it did!

I think we did decide on Illuminations and then possibly Jellyrolls after. I was sitting here thinking that I should PM you my cell number but then I thought...ooh, I didn't ask you if you have a US cell. :cutie: One year I was meeting my friend from Greece and I sent her my cell totally forgetting that she couldn't call me on it. :scared1:

I DO have a cell phone, but not a number yet. As soon as we arrive in Bowling Green, I will go to T-Mobile and get a new SIM card, and will definitely forward my # to you! Please DO go ahead and PM your number, and I'll get it written down in my trusty MICKEY book :)

just remember, Illuminations is the 10th, BUT Jellyrolls won't be until the 11th. After our Boma ressie at 6;50.

GENERAL QUESTION for you all...

If you have used or looked at Steve Soares site, (I know some of you have!) do you think the information I could pull off of there now would be useful for the first week of September??

It says at the top of his site that the info. doesn't change that much, but what has been your experience? How far in advance did you use it to plan your days?

A game sounds fun!

Love your onion volcano. I'd try it at home, but I doubt the FDNY wants to visit. Jen + cooking = trouble :scared1:

HA! I think TK had a bit of fun with the funnel cakes too! :rotfl2: But really, the onion wasn't hard- an onion, a fry pan and a little oil are all you need. ;)

I typed a big long response the other day at work and the window just closed before I could post!! :headache: Thne yesterday I had to box up my work pc and ship it to corporate to get some work done. Not a happy camper!

Anyhoo. . .

The Magic Meets cruise?

Nah...I am going on a Be Our Guest Podcast cruise next June, though. :) On the new ship. :) Wanna come??!?

The Dream? I would love to take a Disney cruise but they are very $$$$.

So funny how fads come and go every few years. I don't think we are THAT far apart in age, my dear. :rolleyes1 Seriously, the difference between the Sunshine Family and Cabbage Patch must have only been like 5 or 6 years. ?

I'm 37 but in my mind still think I am in my early 30's! :rotfl:

"Make it so."

(Jumping ahead to a different series here, but by far my favorivte Star Trek character.)

I love ST:TNG! Maybe when Liesa is at the GF she can order "Tea. Earl Grey.Hot."

I use Steve Soares site all of the time and it is pretty accurate - the times don't change a whole lot. You could pull the info now and then maybe double check it at your sister's before you go. I bet not a lot changes. The biggest difference might be more shows now because it's summer.

I love photography! I take a 1000+ photos every vacation and have gotten some great ones. I love digital cameras because I can click away and take five of the same shot and discard the four that aren't as good and only keep the great one. I may have to hijack and post a photo or two. Though I would still like to do a mini-TR for my last trip if I ever get around to it.

The Germany trip sounds great! We want to go to Europe but will probably wait until Jordan is a little older and take her too. I spent two weeks touring Spain, Portugal and Morocco when I was 17 and it was amazing!

I told you on FB the other day but mark me down for an AK outfit for Tate.

I DO love Earl Grey- one of my very favorites!!

Got Steve's stuff printed off today, and will spend my NO computer day seeing how best to still do WS IN ORDER yet, see the majority of the major entertainment stuff too. We'll see...

Please, feel free to post any photos you want- we LOVE pix around here.

OK, Tate will be happy when I tell him he'll be able to see the animals in style!

The information changes little, however, I have always verified it the week before we go on our trip. That seems to be the most up to date info and includes any changes/additions Disney makes as they adapt to crowd levels.

And I'm close to you guys in age too. I'm 50 but I feel like I'm only 39. :)

I know it!! 40 days from now, in fact, I'll be there!:banana:
Wow, are you at 40 days already?! 62 for me today

I make little cards with the info on them for each park. Several weeks ahead of time. I always check back to see if the info has changed, and so far - it never has for when I'm going.

Hey, I think you forgot something - weren't you going to PM me about the music from the Living Seas?

GREAT!! So that's my work for this weekend- need to finish up the backs of those Minnie book pages :yay:

I'm just wondering since it really will be the change from before Labor Day to after Labor Day, if it really will make a diff.?

Yes, I feel 25 in Disney World and 60 on the track- odd how it changes depending on where you are. ;)

Just PMd you!

I know!! 40 days!! :scared1::woohoo: Amazing, Really!

Yup, my cards are this weekends jobbie. The challenge is to hit the major thing in each WS Pav. but still stay somewhat in order.

I have found it is bascially the same - although they may have more things scheduled right now because it is summer... it may be more slim picking in September.

And you don't have to worry about writing it down so much, because I have his site book-marked on my iPhone for easy reference. I always check it on the bus on the way to AK, DHS or Epcot. :)

The thing it did help me with was knowing which days certain people performed in Epcot - because they take the same days off each week, if that makes sense.

Can I play the game?

Oh no! Not another Liesa game! (groan....) I was going to say that I haven't read enough of the banter to be any good at playing, but the last time I said I wouldn't play because I would certainly lose, it didn't end up being a great excuse. :lmao:

Hi-ya!

Kathy

I haven't seen you around in a long while. :confused3 How are you? WOW June. :thumbsup2

Liesa you are killing me, usually there is so much going on, I'm anxious to get started on the Ready set remember, things are slowing down here (my home life-extra time for DISing) as we near school :)

Oh, gosh, the funnel cake fiasco. They did come out well once I figure out how not to burn down my kitchen making them.

And Monday's game involves having a good memory???

I'm out! :lmao:

Didn't get around to posting yesterday!! Came home from the graduation and fell asleep within an hour and slept 14 hours !!!:scared1:

First, I love your soy sauce volcano! It looks really tasty! :thumbsup2

Second, sorry, but I won't reply to every tiny bit in our epic conversation - just the highlights! I think otherwise we end spending all our spare time carrying multiple conversations on in your PTR...

and to answer your question about gado-gado- it is one of our favorite summer meals on a hot day. It's an Indonesian dish made of steamed veggies with rice and spicy peanut sauce. IT's delicious!!!

Sounds wonderful! I need to try that myself! :thumbsup2

It truly is fair. I would love to hear what Germans REALLY think about Americans. (Be nice!) I have been away for so long that I probably share some of them. ;) Loud, forward, wasteful and extravagent come to mind. Those are the negative ones. Positive ones might include, generous, creative, and fun-loving. :confused3

I better not post this on the DIS... :rolleyes1 Might be a topic that is more apt for a private discussion!;)

I think the German - American relationship is very complex (at least from the German side), since America was on the one hand the "good" allied power which gave us freedom from the Nazis, but then when the cold war dragged on, it was more and more seen as an occupying foreign force. I think that shaped the way we see Americans a lot.

The things you mentioned are seen the same way here. I think on the positive side we also admire the American believe in that you can acchieve anything if you set your mind to it and the general friendliness and excellent custormer service people experience when they are on holiday in the US. On the negative side, Americans are considered superficial (or shallow?). Also they are seen as the foreigners that are least prepared to accept that things are different abroad than what they are used to at home - and don't hesitate to let everyone know about it.

yes, I was thinking that a "loop" walk is what we'll end up doing- hitting the wall, then down from there, and along the river to the depot, and back up.

:thumbsup2

Yes, you can get fabulous views of the strip malls built as recently as 1975. :lmao:

You know, I don't think American strip malls are beautiful, but they are interesting to me - I think in a way that camels were interesting to you when you first moved to the steppe! :goodvibes

Yes, I think you're right. I suppose if truth be told, we think that anything with a turret or tower is a castle. So, for us even the Berg ones are castles.
Neuschwanstein is the one we really wanted to go to, but you weren't there :goodvibes Meeting you trumped the prettier castle.

Katharina's DH was just over for dinner at my place and brought some pictures from their trip to Southern Bohemia last week (she is still in the Czech Republic). You need to bug her to post some pictures of castles. Wow! They do have pretty ones there!!! :woohoo:

REALLY?! By the way, they DO live in Nuremberg right?? Will they also get to join us for dinner??

Yes, they live in Nuremberg now. I think they might think it fun meeting you and your family, so that might be an option. You would get a chance to experience my father's "special terrific grammar free English"! :scared1::scared1: Just don't be surprised when Katharina and I will be sitting under the table when starts talking... :rolleyes1 No, actually my father is amazingly able to converse in English even though he never learned it at school, and only picked it up from American military during his time in the German army (he was a captain with the engineers, but they made the mistake to send him to university to study engineering and he figured out that civil engineering was much more to his liking...). Once when we were on one of our walking trips in England we arrived at a B&B and had a cup of tea with the landlady. And my father wanted to excuse himself and his not so good English and kept telling the poor landlady how "terrific" his English was - he had gotten mixed up about the meaning of the words terrific and terrible!! :scared1::lmao:

You learned some German! :yay: I saw you using it on other threads as well. ;)

For some reason the tour website made it sound like there was actually a tiny little brewery down IN the tunnels?? Hmmm...

Well, they store the beer in the tunnels, so the brewery really uses them. And it is a small brewery in itself. At the end of the tour they will show you the boiler/cauldron/kettle (please pick the correct word!!) where the beer is brewed in and it is small.

Ok, here it is: How to take a train in Germany!!

First, you know already that you have to find the long distance railway station at Frankfurt airport (called „Fernbahnhof“). And there your train is supposed to leave from track 4. But better check this on the departure board.

Once at the track you will find various signs to help you around. First there are these monitors which will show the next train leaving from this platform:

DSC07119-1.jpg

For your train it ought to read:

train number ICE 527 and final destination München - Nürnberg should be listed as one of the stops along the way.

At each platform there will be huge boards like this one:

DSC07120.jpg

They show for every train what the set up of the train will be like and in which section of the platform your coach will be in.

Here you can see more detail:

DSC07122.jpg

Your position on the platform will be marked with a red dot:

DSC07121.jpg

Your train will most likely be made up of two train sets. One with the coaches 21 to 28 (including yours, 26) and one with 31 to 38. Make sure that you get into the set with the 20s, there is no way to walk from one set over to the other, but all the coaches are connected. So as long as you get into 21, you will be able to walk to your seats. But in case you would otherwise miss the train, just hop on!!

You ought to be able to figure out the best area to wait for your caoch, but be prepared that sometimes they change the train layout. If you hear an announcement (which ought to be in German first and then in English at Frankfurt airport station) and you then see people starting to move to the other end of the platform, you better ask someone, ideally someone with a blue uniform.

When the train arrives, you will be able to see its destination and the coach number on the monitors on the side of the train.

DSC07117.jpg

And a closer shot:

DSC07118.jpg

These might only become switched on just before the train stops, so don't worry if you don't see them at first when the first coaches go past you.

You don't have to hurry into the train (and it is considered polite to let people get of the train first ;) ), they won't close the door as long as they see people getting on. But don't think you have plenty of time. These trains normally just stop for two minutes or so. So if you find out that you are nowhere near coach 26, you might want to still try to get the right set of coaches as I said above, but then just get into 28 or 21 (even if it is a first class coach, you will be allowed to walk through first class to get to the second class).

Once inside the train there is another monitor telling you which train you are on and the coach number:

DSC07097.jpg

Here you can see the location of the monitor in the entrance area:

DSC07096.jpg

You can then enter the coach through some nice ´glass doors – and if you turn around once inside you will see a monitor again which shows the coach number and the train:

DSC07115.jpg

Now you can go and search your seats. They should look like that:

DSC07110.jpg

Do you see the small black rectangles above the window? These are monitors again which will show the seat number and if the seat is reserved:

DSC07103.jpg

In your case it would of course read Frankfurt-Nürnberg for all your seats!

And then it is time to relax and to enjoy your train ride!! But I even have some more information for you!

This neat little leaflet will give you all kind of information about the train, its arrival times at the various stations and possible connections. It will also help you finding the buffet car:

DSC07107.jpg

DSC07113.jpg

Luggage can be stored above your seats, or between some of the seats that are back to back. But in the walkways where the coaches are connected you can find some luggage racks as well:

DSC07102.jpg

This is also where you find the toilets and the garbage bins:

DSC07099.jpg

There are so many because we also recycle on the train!

I hope you will arrive in Nuremberg well rested and without any train problems!!

Now I am looking forward to the game tomorrow!! But I am still stuck in Part 1 (at post 90 now...). It is so much fun to read it all, not just the updates! :goodvibes
