Cycling from POR

DH is a keen cyclist and wants to hire a bike whilst at POR. Does anyone know if there are cycle routes that take him round WDW which avoid main roads and let him cycle for several hours? Thanks

Alas, Disney's view of cycling is to go very slowly along a one mile path. The bikes they rent aren't good for much more than that. And while it is perfectly legal to bike on most of the roads within Disney property, Disney basically hides that fact and does everything it can to discourage serious cycling. They want you piddling along their designated bike paths.

If your DH is serious, best bet would be to find a bike shop in Orlando and pick something up. This requires car access of Disney property, as well as a willingness to ride on some main roads - pretty much everything immediately surrounding Disney has traffic.

go to FW and rent a bike there. He can cycle a long time.... - after you ride the bus to the rental.....

there is a lagoon that goes around both POR and POFQ that he ride the bike on - but it is only a mile (might be less) - so for someone who wants to ride - FW.

the bikes at Disney must stay on the property they were rented at - I think.

might just be on property. Different people have different versions.

I used to be seriously into cycling, so I understand your DH's needs. I don't think there is much around WDW for serious cycling. I think he would be best to give up the bike for a week and run instead. If not, he should consult with a bike shop in Orlando and get some info on rural routes in the region.

The only place where he might be able to ride is the Wilderness campground. I think there is a back route that the buses take to get into there which the regular traffic can't use. I may be wrong about that.

There is not going to be one bike path that your husband is going to want to use. For a serious cyclist, that is just an exercise in frustration.

There is a lot of bus traffic around Disney, even in the early morning. I have run on some of the access roads and it can be hairy. I imagine riding a bike would be the same.

MEK - FW has walking/biking paths that are all around FW. some are next to the buses - but they aren't in the road.
