in response to some pp, yes, it is the policy. Under no circumstances..
This piece of information made it easier to vote on the poll. If the policy is clear and unmistakable, including the likelihood of termination, then it would not surprise me for the company to follow through and terminate a worker who violated policy.

Where I work, if someone wasn't cursing we'd probably assume they were taken over by a pod person in the middle of the night and hit them with a shovel or something.

Why is it such a big deal anyway?
I mean, I cuss an lot but dont mean anything derogatory by it. It is just how I talk. Good times and bad... that is what flys out of my mouth. Geeze, people act like you're going to HE!! for saying A WORD. It's a WORD! It's not an act of murder or anything. :confused3

Came back to actually adress the OP's question LOL!:rotfl: I sorta forgot that part: If the place of business was such that it was really wrong, like a church, school or various other places... then no, I wouldnt cuss and might expect to be talked to or fired if I did.

Clearly, it depends on the context. If I were to cuss out another employee, I would definitely expect some kind of repercussions. However, if I hang up the phone after talking to a particularly difficult client and let loose with a comment about said client's parentage it wouldn't shock anyone.

Of course, now that I work from home, I can cuss out anyone I want and only the kittehs are witnesses.

I worked in a call center and saw people walked out the door for foul language.

I tend to use "language" when I'm driving more than anything; people around here are notorious for leaving their brains at home when they get behind the wheel.

At work, people get this shocked look on their face if I let something out; not because I swore, but because they're not used to hearing such things out of my mouth, tho everyone else here swears like a sailor.

I voted "no", but it would really depend on the situation. I am sure I would be fired if I went off on a customer, or in front of one.

I worked on an ambulance for many years and the station language was totally different from the public language, however, there were times when you had to get rather rude with people, but it was not often did I use bad language in public, but it did happen, and sometimes it slipped out due to the stress of the situation I was in or whatever was going on.

I did have a partner who was driving with the lights on while I was standing in the back working and did not slow for a red light as he should and had to lock the brakes and I went flying and hit my head on the action area and hit it hard enough to bust the shunt I have in my head. I let a string of colorful words fly. I then apologized to my patient, who said, you did good...I would have called him worse.

PS...my partner wanted my wrote up for cussing him out...he told the supervisor I cussed him out...supervisor told him if it was him he would have done it too.

Agreed, but that would apply whether curse words were used or not. Treating others with contempt should always be grounds for termination. But the simple use of a curse word does not always convey contempt for anyone or anything. The poor choice of a word should never get a person fired, IMO...

I don't think I'd be fired for cursing at work, as long as I didn't make a habit of it.

No I work in the office of a construction company. When I first came to work it became apparent pretty quickly that I'd better be able to take hearing colorful language.

I have to say that I don't curse at work. As a matter of fact, there was once a situation (about 10 years ago) that somebody claimed I had done so, but, the person handling the situation was incredulous at the claim I had done so. But, then, I am a physician, and if they actually fired physicians on the spot for cursing, no questions asked, likely there wouldn't be any physicians left to see patients. So,no, I wouldn't expect to be fired if I cursed on the job.

My World Geography teacher curses a lot, and lets us curse in class. As long as we're not calling someone a bad word, or intend to hurt anyone's feelings, he thinks it's fine.
