Current turn-around time for getting a US pasport?

DS is supposed to go on a weekend trip to Canada with the Boy Scouts in just over 3 weeks. His passport expired and of course it's not just an easy renew because he had a child's passport and now he's over 18. When we got his first passport card 6 years ago the turn-around time was supposedly 6-8 weeks but we had it in-hand in just over 2 weeks.

Has anyone had recent experience with getting a passport? How long did it take to get your passport in-hand WITHOUT paying the expediting fee? I'd REALLY hate to pay... well, I really hate for HIM to pay ... the expediting fee if people are receiving their passport within 3 weeks without expediting.

We renewed back in the spring. I wouldn't chance it. Pay the expediting fee. It took a little over 3 weeks for the new passports to arrive.

DH got a new passport last spring, took a little more than 3 weeks. I agree with Marionette above, expedite it.

We (family of 4) got ours either very late last year or early this year (overseas trip was this past April). It was around 3 weeks. You should not risk it and should pay to have expedited.

my husband payed for expedited shipping and it still took 20 days. I realize that it's an aberration, but it can happen. Pay for expedited shipping and get it taken care of today.

Signed my daughter up for a new passport 2 weeks ago, have heard nothing yet. I say expedite.

Thanks everyone. He has an appointment this afternoon and I told him to have it expedited. Hope he gets it in time but it'll be a learning lesson for him if it doesn't. He's known about the trip for months but procrastinated on the passport until I brought it up the other night.

I think mine took closer to 4 weeks in May of this year.

We just received 4 updated/renewed passports last week. It took approx. 4 weeks.

If they are driving across the border both ways look into an enhanced drivers license for your state. Probably a faster turnaround and you can use it when driving into and out of Canada.

My children just received theirs . My DD took two weeks exactly and my son took an additional week. I was surprised how quickly they came. Luckily they don't travel until next summer.

My DD16 got her first passport this summer. It took 5 weeks.

DD (18) applied for her first passport and DH renewed his passport

Both of my DDs passports arrived exactly 2 weeks after we applied for them back in March.

It will be 3 weeks for us tomorrow and we have not received yet. Site still indicates 4-6 weeks

I did mine in June to update to my married name. It took well over a month.

Too late now that I see your date, and don't know where you live but there are now a handful of US Passport offices where you can make an appointment the day before, walk in and walk out with it. We've done this on a few "emergency" situations, one being DD having the child passport and I'm thinking it expired with mine. For others, always check if you have one close to you.

My parents just renewed theirs (they had not expired yet but were soon to) and it took a month from the date they mailed the forms and old passports in to get new ones in their hand.

It took just over 4 weeks to get DD's in the mail, and we applied in July. Didn't pay for expedited processing.

I just got my children's first passports. Appointment to in-hand, 6 weeks. Expedite or do same-day in office.
