Current Trip Cost Toward DVC Purchase?

I saw a video where a guy said Disney credited the trip he was currently on toward a direct purchase. Is that a common thing? I've been getting very interested in buying in but the direct perks aren't much of a draw for me, but this could make a minimum purchase a bit more tempting.

How old was the video? My understanding this was something that DVC stopped long ago. Perhaps others can join in to offer their experiences.

I believe it was 2016 at the oldest. Dang that would be nice though.
Link?

I have a hard time believing that this was offered in 2016 or later. The economy has been too good and DVC has not had to incentivize buyers to that degree.

They've not done that for a long time. Incentives are also way down from the days they'd throw in park tickets or a cruise.

If they promised 3 fast passes for every booked trip (even with "premier ride" restriction) husband and I would be much more tempted by direct... :crazy2:

I remember when I was doing a DVC phone tour my guide told me that if I were to buy direct (he knew I was looking at resale) they would cancel and rebook a trip I had already booked using my new points, and in that way, the trip would be covered - so a welcome home visit of such - but I would still have been paying for it, with my own points. Maybe that's what the guy in the video meant? I didn't end up buying direct, so I guess it wasn't that nice a of a perk ;-)

I got an offer in early 2018 that was pretty amazing, but we couldn't get the dates to work. It was staying in CCV at 40% off and then applying the trip cost to DVC purchase.

We were planning on buying DVC (and did), and it was impossible for us to make the dates. It was painful leaving a free trip on the table.

That was a super specific offer, though. They don't just have you walk in and ask that your stay be applied to the purchase and have that work.

Now if they had that offer for RIV I wonder how many people would jump into DVC or catch addonitis.

Now, that was some incentives to buy, but it looked like you had to be somewhat interested in DVC to book with that offer. You couldn't just sign up at the many DVC kiosks throughout WDW.

When we bought, the cost of the points that our stay would have been had we already been DVC members was credited to us as a down payment on our direct purchase.

However, that was in 1997 and we were staying in a standard room at the Poly. I believe it was 97 points for the 7 nights. BTW that stay, with four of us (DS 13 and DD 9) in one room, with one bathroom and DD barely fitting in the daybed to sleep, confirmed that we needed to buy DVC and we needed enough points for a 2 bedroom.

We had that offer in 1997 and applied what we paid for our Polynesian reservation towards our OKW purchase.

OK. Thanks for the heads up. Here's the link. It was published in 2017, but hes talking about a purchase in 2005.

For sure. Prior to getting that email, I had requested the DVC DVD and did a lot of "learning" on their site and here. I had not talked to a guide yet. Someone had called a few times, but I was in independent learning mode. I didn't talk to a guide until I knew I wanted to buy.

From what I remember there were a LOT of blockout dates. And that was the problem with our trying to schedule the "free" trip. We were ready to buy DVC at that time anyhow, so it would have been perfect. But the 1/7 - 5/24 dates were a lot more restrictive than that range sounds... any week we could have made it work was blocked out...

I was offered a deal called Magical Beginnings by DVD back in 1997 or so.
They took the DVC point cost from the DVC point charts if you traded out to Disney Resort hotels, of what Disney Resort you were staying at, and applied that to your purchase, (not the down payment if I remember correctly). Moderate resorts were $5 a point. I was staying at Dixie Landings for 5 nights. So how ever many the points cost was, hypothetically say 50, they offered $5 times that, so again in our example $250 toward my purchase. I thought it was not a good deal, had already paid for my stay, and wanted my points for the DVC resorts.
I think it was aimed at people who perhaps couldn't really afford DVC, but would get caught up in the magic, and do an impulse buy. It really didn't take much off your purchase price, and was certainly not entire credit for your current stay.

I bet that's in lieu of the "developer incentive" credit. In other words, say you spent $3500 on 6 nights in a 1BR and you got that deducted from the purchase price of 200 points. Going by the current promotion for Riviera, you'd get an immediate $3400 discount simply by buying. I could be wrong about that, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Yes, that might be correct. Looking back at the email, the fine print does say that you must purchase 200 vacation points or more. It doesn't say anything about getting (or not) the developer credit in addition.

And this makes me feel better, too. haha. So I didn't really waste an opportunity for a "free" trip...
