WIthin the last few months, I've found out that "Papa's Den" is named after Ernest Hemmingway (affectionately called Papa) and that Slappy Joe's is named for a bar in Key West, Sloppy Joe's. Does anyone know the significance of any other names there-like who was Olivia? Good's to Go? Does Gurgling Suitcase have any significance? I love these Disney "name" touches. Did you know Jelly Rolls is named for the Jazz Pianist, Jelly Roll Morton? I never knew there was a person by that name! And Scat Cat's lounge at POFQ is because Scat is a well-known beebop style of jazz singing. So what else can anyone tell me, most especially about the names at OKW?

I forget the exact story but the Gurgling Suitcase had something to do with bootlegging liquor in the suitcases during Prohibition. I think this was in one of the VM issues many moons ago. There is a story about "Olivia" opening her restaurant and the captain -- can't remember the whole thing -- but I'm not sure if that's based on any real Key West tale or just Disney imagination. The name "Conch Flats" (what the resort "story" name by Disney was when the real name was Disney Vacation Club) reflected the conch in Key West -- I'm not sure if there's someplace there that is called Conch Flats.

The Gurgling Suitcase is from Prohibition days, when people smuggled alcohol in their suitcases.

Believe it or not, I still remember that from our original tour in 1993!

I'm sure there are great stories behind the rest of the names at OKW, but I can't remember any others. (I'm still wondering how I remembered about Gurgling Suitcase!!)

Sorry, we must have posted at the same time -- glad you have a better memory than I do!

There was also a Scat Cat in the Aristocats. He was the leader of the Jazz Band.

Is that the Captain who for years sat in the back of Olivia's in one of the booths? I cannot remember his name, but somewhere I have pictures of friends with him!!

Yes, that's him! I can't remember exactly what the story was.
