I'm planning to make cupcakes for the very first time ever.
Do I really need a cupcake pan to put the paper liners in, or will it also work if I put the paper liners on a regular baking sheet?

You really need a cupcake pan, if you put them on a regular baking sheet they will spread out and not puff up as good.

You really need a pan. I also recommend a plastic cupcake carrying case if you are making more than a dozen and need to transport them. I've been making cupcake for my kids' classes for a few years now and that carrying case is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

You need the pan. I'm sitting here kind of chuckling, because in my mind, I'm envisioning your cupcakes coming out of the oven looking more like pancakes.

Good luck with your first ever batch of cupcakes!

Do you have the kind of cupcake liners with foil ones and paper ones over there? I was always under the impression that if you used the foil/paper liner combination then you could do them without a cupcake pan. I have never tried it though.

Anyone know if this is correct about the foil liners?

You are correct. I've made them with the foil cups before. I only have one cupcake pan and I've been in a hurry not wanting to wait to use it twice when making a box of cupcakes. You just line up the foil ones on a baking sheet and fill them like you would if you were using a cupcake pan.

I don't even have a cupcake pan anymore. I just use the foil cups on a regular baking sheet.

Well, cupcakes are not that common over here, so there is no such thing to buy as a real cupcake carrying box. i'll go to Ikea for some generic plastic boxes, and use those.

The liners I have are just paper ones, they came with the cupcake pan (it's still wraped in foil), and I am not even sure i'll be able to buy replacement paper liners (they don't sell them at the store I bougth the pan at).
I might have to import everyting from the US, buying it on eBay...

I just thought cupcakes would be the easiest to sell here at work for the fundraising thing, because it doesn't involve plates and cutting etc :)

A quick other question: how much icing do you normally put on it?

THe amount of icing depends on what look you are going for.

For a large amount of cupcakes- I like to use a cake decorating sleeve and swirl it on. It adds about 1/2 inch of icing to the cupcake.

Using a knife gets a little messier, but you may not have a sleeve and cap to use. Try looking up some pictures online to get the feel of how much to put on.

I will buy you some cupcake liners. Then we will finally meet for a drink and I will hand them to you secretly like we're in a movie and I am giving you something illegal.:cool2:

Ice them as you would a cake, thick or a little thinner, but just the tops. You can also decorate them with sprinkles.

I think it's a matter of personal preference. My mom uses a spatula and thinly spreads her icing. I use a pastry bag with a big star-shaped tip in it and pipe on a huge mound of icing. My icing is almost as large as the cupcake itself, LOL.

I'll just do the best that I can regarding teh icing, and if I don't forget, I'll take pictures!

Oh, that would be so cool!

Last week, I had to think about you! There was a white-ish ford something (SUV) with a Virginia license plate driving in front of me, and I wondered whether it was you are not. It's not like we see that many US cars here, and I know you have yours here!
It was on the Leopold 3 lane in Evere, going to the Delhaize.

We should really meet up for drinks.

Can you get flat bottomed ice cream cones? I love to make Ice Cream Cone cupcakes. I put the ice cream cones in the cupcake pan and you fill them with batter and after they are baked you ice them with a star tip to look like ice cream and add sprinkles if you want. My kids love these for school treats.

Here is a link to a recipe so you know how long to cook. I don't add as much icing as this shows though! Just about an inch.http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50158

Oh, and my husband made a carrier for me by just cutting holes in a cardboard box.

A chef after my own heart! I love a good icing.  The cake part is too dry otherwise.
