culture is defined by two mediums. material and non material. material cultural objects are things like mcdonalds, clothing, jewelry, cell phones, cars, architecture, and art. nonmaterial cultural objects are things like religion, feelings, ideas, etc.

today in my sociology class, we have to represent an aspect of the culture we identify ourselves as. it could be anything from race (which is an idea) to your religion (also nonmeterial) to a mcdonalds hamburger (material.)

so what would you bring in, or talk about? how do you identify yourself with a culture?

I'd probably bring in my dance shoes since I've been Irish step dancing since I was 5. That's a big part of who I am. Also I'd probably bring in something Disney related because I've grown up going to Disney.

really interesting. i identify as canadian, i don't know what generation canadian i am, but my family has been here since the late 1700s, so that's really the only culture i know.

within canada i identify as both a quebecer and an ontarian, as i've lived my life equally in both provinces, i find that i identify more as a quebecer because that's where my family's roots are and that's where i was brought up.

to be honest it's really tough to decide what i'd talk about/bring in! it's going to take some time to think about it. i think an idea that represents my culture is misrepresentation -- everyone in the rest of canada tends to assume that quebecers are all french speaking separatists, which is completely untrue. while there is a large population of separatists in quebec, it's not the majority. (for those who don't know in the late '90s there was a big political upheaval in canada where the bloc quebecois (a political party) wanted quebec to become a separate entity from canada (becoming it's own country)...as RIDICULOUS as that sounds it's true, there was even a referendum vote. A lot of quebecers (mostly french speaking) still believe in separatism, but it's not a political issue anymore really)

whenever people find out i'm from quebec i get scoffed at...so that's what i would talk about probably, how my culture is misrepresented among the rest of my country.

what did(/will) you talk about/bring in shelby?

i'm a little torn between bringing in mickey ears, or mukluks. i really think i'm leaning towards the mukluks right now, which references being native alaskan.

shoes say a lot about people, because there are so many different kinds, and i bought these at target, so something so inherent to my culture as shoes has become a mainstream commodity in department stores.

my class is at 4.10 today, so i'll let you guys know how it went afterwards.

I guess I'd bring in a mini superlambbanana
This is the original giant one if you don't know what it is:

It's a Liverpool thing (:

And I'd also bring in my minnie mouse wish peral necklace, since I've basically grown up in Disney and my earliest memories are Disney related.

I'd also talk about being a non-fisheterian, if that counts as like beliefs or something (:

Wow Shelby, you sound just like me when I was taking sociology last spring. It's really interesting isn't it? And that sounds like a great assignment.

I think I'd bring in a book. For me, at least right now, my entire life is focused on education. Plus reading is something I love to do in my spare time anyways.

I'd bring in...

my pentagram necklace that I never go anywhere without. I've spent a lot of time in the last four years explaining Satanism/Paganism to people to help dissipate their prejudices. It's a major part of who I am, my religion.

my disucs shoes. If there's one thing I love more than anything else, it's discus. I live in the circle in the springtime.

my copy of "Le petit prince" because I'm a French major. It's something I really enjoy and this is one of the most defining books in French culture. The Prince was even on the Franc when it was around.

i guess i would bring in my ugg boots because they are a bogan symbol and i live in one of the most bogan towns in australia

a portfolio of fashion sketches. fashion design is what i want to do with my life.

probably also a collage of pictures from my youth group. youth leadership is probably one of the most important things in my life. it combines my love of worshipping God and my love of helping young people find and grow into who they were designed to be. and its fun :)

Something Disney related and something music related. Both are big parts of my life.

Non-material I would bring my bible, because my faith plays a huge role of who I am. As for materialistic items, it would either be my cellphone or lip gloss. Both are essential to me.

I identify myself as an American, but we definitely still celebrate our german and irish ancestry. Every march we do our annual irish party. I also just found out I have some distant relatives living over there. I'm hopeful one day I will get to go visit them.

I would probably bring my USB in because most of my valuable work from HS is in that thing. I have two of them attached to my keychain.

Other than that I'd bring my mickey ears.
