Cultural differences?

I see people on both sides of this judging others. If some people are uncomfortable seeing exposed breasts, that is how they feel. If some people think it's great, that's how they feel. Neither side is "wrong" IMO.

Nursing Moms, I say just do your thing and quit worrying about it. If you don't feel uncomfortable more power to you. But also respect those who do cover up or do go elsewhere. They just simply don't feel the same and that's their right.

You asked her why she did this, and this is what she told you?

With all due respect, I really believe that you're projecting your personal hang ups onto her. I'd venture to guess that she probably gave the entire matter little, if any, thought.

I was in the choir so I never even saw her actually do it. However, I did see her "interactions" with ushers, with one of the Sisters and with one of the Priests-all who had asked her to please use a blanket when nursing in the sanctuary.

Am I the only who looks at that photo and thinks "Just put that silly thing away". ;)

Ok ok ok... show me yours.

Seasoned not withstanding. (where did that ducking smiley go??)

Oh my curlers .................... :scared:

Seasoned? You go from being a 36C to a 42long. :lmao:

Does anyone know if sex crimes against women have increased or decreased since the sexual revolution? Sometimes I really think it backfired.

As I understand it, rape rates are fairly constant globally. Women are in just as much danger in Saudi Arabia as they are in Miami, FL or Nome, Alaska. Clothing doesn't matter so much. Women dress modestly in Saudi Arabia for cultural / religious reasons. Women in Nome, Alaska cover themselves just as throughly due to the weather. Heck, it was just in the news that a 90 year old woman in Italy was sexually assaulted.

That's funny. You're embarrassed because some people feel the need to be modest, discreet and have not so much of a "if it feels good, why not?" attitude. :lmao:

That's hardly what I posted. The people you described represent many people in this country, but not all. What I am embarrassed about is the number of outright prudes in this country. The ones who not only do what is right for themself, but expect to control the lives of others (breast feeding moms for example) as well.

Just because I point out the number of prudes doesn't mean I support everybody going to the other "Austin Powers" like extreme.

And I see you ignored the other part of my post. So are we ahead of other countries or not? Why is it OK to say we are ahead of other countries and not say were are behind?

That's because most experts admit, that for the most part, rape is not sexual.

This makes complete sense. Rape is about power and control. So no matter what you wear or did not wear it would not have helped.

For me it is not an issue of ahead or behind but that women are treated equally in that particular society. If dressing modest is only required by women then IMHO it is wrong.

Oh, okay. I was wrong. I apologize.

You know what dangers they say lie with assuming anything...

Good point. Modest dressing should not be restricted to women only. However, I don't see too many young men dressed as sexually as young women. Young men seem to be going for the most baggy and covered up clothing they can find, while young women are working on getting everything shorter, tighter and exposing more skin.

Agreed, rape is about power. Our repressive society is often listed as a secondary cause for people to act out sexually and it really has nothing to do with it.

ITA with that, but I believe what people were talking about goes much further than that. IMO the media can tell you a lot about a society. Look at how much America freaked out about the Janet Bowl and then look at what is allowed on the standard soap opera. You can show people basically getting it on, and showing mucho skin in the process, but show a nipple and get fined mucho bucks.

Ohhhh good grief!!!
This thread has degenerated just like all other threads on this topic.
And, it is still here on page one??? On and on and on.... Another energizer bunny.

I have to say that it gets really old hearing the liberal, let it all hang out, crowd try to use the issue of breastfeeding to justify their views.

I am PRO breastfeeding!!!

And, it is very obvious that breastfeeding with a little discretion is completely different than displaying a bare, engorged, nipple on the front page of the media. HUGE difference.

Try to accuse me of being anti-natural-breastfeeding.
Try to call me prude.
Try to call me repressed.
Try to blame all the ills of society on me.
Try to call me 20 years behind.
Try to call me whatever you want.

Name call all you want, but you would be completely wrong.
And I just ain't buying it.

QUOTE]

A minor point: you've used the word "engorged" several times to describe the nipple in the picture. It isn't: that would be a normal lactating nipple, looks likes it has just been used for feeding. I infer from the term "engorged" either a sexual connotation or a biological mechanism, neither of which is relevant to the picture (in my opinion).

But then, maybe I'm a prude. But then again, I'm European, so that can't be true........ ;)

So let's elevate the level of discourse.

I have to say that it gets really old hearing the liberal, let it all hang out, crowd try to use the issue of breastfeeding to justify their views.

Let's not generalize. There are Republican, evangelically conservative women who are aggressive about breastfeeding in public. Ever been to a La Leche League meeting in the deep south of the USA? There are also Democratic, Massachusetts liberal "mother earth" types who are aggressive about breastfeeding in public.

There are also Republican women who breastfeed, and are very cautious about using receiving blankets. When I was in Glendora, Mississippi that was the norm. Coincidentally, up in Rhode Island, with more Democrats than Massachusetts, most of the women use receiving blankets too.

And of course for the women who use bottles (do you think they are liberals or conservatives?*) they wouldn't have the breast exposed for nursing at all. So are they more modest than conservatives and liberals who don't use bottles? You can clearly see the difficultly here with judging a woman's politics by her 'aggressive' breastfeeding, or lack thereof.

*I suspect both! Because women are diverse in their values, feelings, health, options, and comfort zones. The problem comes in when we generalize instead of looking at women as individuals.
