Anyone else's son making a Pinewood Derby car right now? Our race is Sunday.

That is too funny. I get to work this morning and I hear someone drilling. I go and see what is going on and find a co-worker helping another build a derby car for his son.

Tell your Son I said Good Luck!

Oh the memories! DS's have been out of cub scouts for 2 years now, and are in boy scouts. Last January I did a happy dance as we do not have to make those cars anymore! Then DS comes home this past week with his 7th grade technology project, a wooden car that is 12" long. He only had to paint it so that wasn't too bad, but a neighbor who has been sick a lot this past quarter, didn't get to cut his car in school. So I told his mom to bring it here as we have had some experience, so there I was again with the band saw carving out a car

We really did have fun with the pinewood derby cars though. One of my DS's won for most creative car three years in a row, one for an alligator car, a crest toothpaste tube car and an Iguana car. He decided it was too hard to go for speed, but his twin was still trying to build a fast car. He came in fourth one year and we had over 100 boys in the pack.

Pinewood Derby is so much fun! To attend and to scrap! I have one of my favorite photos of DS from a Pinewood. He was in 5th grade, all dressed up in his Webelos uniform and is standing at the top of the ramp as he car crossed the finish line first in the last heat. His arms are pumped straight up in the air and there is the BIGGEST smile on his face.

Have fun with it. My DS is 17 and a junior in high school now. He is waiting on the committee to convene for his Eagle Board of Review (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting - they are being really slow) but he still has all of his Pinewood cars lined up on a shelf in his room.

Don't forget the camera Mom!

DS won 1st place Wolves last year. DH and DS are not very artist so they go for speed. LOL I'm the artist one, but DH doesn't do a lot of things with DS so I let it be a guy thing.

yep us too! I already have been taking pictures. Them on the PC finding a pattern, then at the ban saw.....etc.....
DH has been working on the the "truck" with our son. He is a Tiger scout! Our race is in Feb. I can't wait!
Wonder what scrapping embellishments I need to find! LOL!

I was just looking at my Disney Magazine winter 2004 -2005 edition and a reader sent in a picture of her son's pinewood cerby car - it is a WDW monorail car! Very Cute!

Zandy595 I see your pack divides the competition into rank? We tried to get our pack to do that, but they said it would take too long so all the boys Tigers to Webelo II were all in the same competition. I think it would be less frustrating especially for the younger boys to do it by rank.

Twigs ~ Yep, we divide them into ranks (it's the only fair way to do it) and they only race against other boys in the same rank. It does take forever. We turn it into an all day event. We sell hot dogs and chips for lunch. And this year we're also having a bake sale. I just finished baking a batch of giant chocolate chip cookies. All the money from food sales goes to the pack. Since we live in FL we hold the derby outside, well kind of outside. We have it in the fire station's garage with the front and back bay doors open. It's supposed to be kind of cold tomorrow though 62. We're used to it being around 75.

We're back from the Derby. DS came in 3rd place Bears!

My son is a boy scout now, but when were in cub scouts, we did ours by cub scout rank. Gave medals for top three in each rank. Then the top ten times overall competed for the three spots to go on to district. We do our car rankings for medals by average time--each car runs four times--once in each lane. Had about 45 cars from scouts;10-15 open cars in a separate race(parents and siblings). We were done in about 2 1/2 hours with racing. With set up and clean up, about 4 hours total. Had door prizes handed out and judging for coolest, most unique, fastest looking cars as well.
