Cruising The Canal May 1, 2015 (Roll Call in Post 1)

Ooh that had not occurred to me yet! Since I'm traveling with mom will need to make sure I do something special for her too!

Take her to brunch at Palo! If I wasn't with my too young kids, that's where I'd want to be on Mother's Day!

I am about to book this cruise on Monday. For me (38M), the wife (36F), and the Daughter (8F). It will be the wife and I's 3rd cruise and the daughter's first.

Does anyone know if you will get a better credit from Small World Travels or just by using Costco? Prices are basically the same everywhere as far as I can tell.

And, can we fly in to Miami (From No. Cal) the day of pretty safely?

Already looking forward to this trip.

NO WAY!!! There are to many things that could go wrong and you would miss the ship. For the cost of $100+ for an extra night the peace of mind is worth it. Your plane could be delayed, your luggage could get lost. Do not plan on coming in that day it is not worth it. Read thru these message boards and you will see.

OK, ya'll convinced me, I can fly in the night before :) Though it does look like fort lauderdale is cheaper to fly in to for us.

Roll Call:
Corey(38)
Amber (36)
Callie (7)
Second Dining
Deck 6

From Norther California.

I have a feeling quite a few people will be flying into Fort Lauderdale. I'm not sure if we will shuttle into Miami and stay there, or if we will get a hotel in Fort Lauderdale and shuttle into the port in the morning, but we will almost certainly be flying into FLL.

I have read about this forum in cruise reviews. We are booked for our first cruise! Any tips or hints are welcome.

Hi Everyone! I'm super new to this DIS board posting stuff BUT I am SO excited about our Disney Cruise that I just had to join in! This will be our first Disney Cruise - DH, DD -8 and DD- 4. We are going with our good friends jdlong37. I just joined the FB group too! We are very excited to experience our first Disney cruise! I love reading all of the tips on here. We are located in Northern CA. Is there anyone on here that has thought about starting a FE group yet...or is it too early lol. Look forward to meeting new people and enjoying this cruise altogether!!

it's our first cruise as well, and we couldn't be more excited! we have also joined the facebook group. We are located in Colorado and are looking forward to meeting new friends also! What exactly is a FE group? I am so happy to be planning anything Disney again!! The fact that it is a cruise is so exciting!!!

Welcome!

A "FE group" is a group of people that exchange small gifts on the cruise. FE stands for "Fish Extender." Outside of each door is a small metal fish, meant as a place for Disney to stick notes or mail. People "extend" it by hanging something along the lines of a pocket organizer from it (though people have used all sorts of things, from the elaborate to the very simple). You are given a list of people (I believe the lists will be broken up into about 12 cabins for this group) and then you come up with little gifts to give out.

For our first cruise, I made Mickey Mouse pendants for the women and teenage girls, Mickey or Minnie ears for the kids, magnets, and for the men and teenage boys I bought Disney calendars/planners and movie theater candy, things like that. Some people did little baggies of candy from their hometown/country... little emergency kits... anything you can think of! It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, but it is a lot of fun!

I went into my trip report to pull out things about the FE.

Here is the FE I made:

This post has a picture of our FE hanging by our door (and at the very bottom of the post a picture of the first gift that was left for us):

Toward the bottom of this post, I included picture of the things I made for the exchange:

The kids loved it and I have to say... as an adult it was still a lot of fun. I'm already working on my plans for this one!

While I realize I am about 9 months early on this... Has anyone started looking in to the non-ship excursions? We could start a google doc or something to gauge interest to try and get some group rates that would probably beat the ships. And there are a few excursions I am reading about that aren't available via the ship.

Of course if such a thing already exists, point me to it. And if you have already been to some of these stops and there is a "must do" excursion in your opinion, we could add that to a doc as well.

We know we are going to do Las Caletas through Disney for Puerto Vallarta, but I am open to non-ship excursions for Cozumel and Cartagena. For both of those places, I want something that has some educational value while also being interesting for the kids. In Cozumel I'd like to see ruins, and I like the idea of learning something about the culture of Colombia.

OK, I'll keep looking then. I've only gone through Cartagena so far, but there is a street food tour that sounds fun to me. And it includes some history/site seeing etc I believe. It's reviewed well. Once I have more, I will post again.

A street food tour sounds like it could be amazing! The one thing that seems to be missing from most of the city-type tours through Disney is getting to eat authentic food, and I find that a bit disappointing. When is the next time we will be in Colombia?!

Well I will be a week from Thursday. Honestly I never do anything that involves eating off the ship. I have already paid for my meal, I don't want to pay for another one. Just my strange thinking.

I'll keep you in the loop :)

Thanks... I've been reading up on Colombian street food, and I must eat plenty of it during that day. Whether or not I do a tour that specifically has to do with street food, I'd better run into some arepas and empanadas... and fresh fruit juices... and I might have to drink some coffee from some random person's carafe... I'm getting hungry! They are going to have to roll me back onto the ship - better wear my Thanksgiving pants!
