We are cruising out of NYC this fall...for anyone who has cruised out of NYC on Disney...we want to take in all of the sights when we cruise out & possibly cruise back in to port.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Is the top deck the best? Has anyone woken up super early the last morning to watch? Do you see the Statue of Liberty both times?

Thanks!

On the way out of the city the Statue will be on the starboard side and on the way back in on the port side. We did enjoy the sights on our sailaway in 2012.

I got up at 4am to watch us sail in and we'd already gone past the statue of liberty... I only got up that early because we had a crew immigration and had to be up not much later anyway. But it was cool seeing all the lights as we sailed in.
Sailing out you see pretty much everything. I had to go in just after we went past the statue of liberty.

As a CM, I used the crew area on deck 5 so can't help you with where's best. Out of about 5 sailings out of NYC, I only had chance to watch once...

We've sailed in/out of NYC several times. We always watch from the top deck. Takes about an hour from when you leave the dock to go under the bridge (after that, there isn't much to see). As you are sailing out, the NYC skyline is on the port side and once you are past the Freedom Tower, you can move to the starboard side to see the Statue of Liberty. You could certainly see the NYC Skyline and the Statue of Liberty from deck 4, but if you are up on the top decks you can check progress on both sides without having to walk back and forth. But you definitely want to be on the top decks when you pass under the bridge, that gives you a good sense of how close it is!

Only once have we watched on our way back in and that's because it was a port of call and not disembarkation port. On our last sailings, the captain told us the last night what times they were scheduled to pass by the major points in the morning but that was completely subject to change. We live in the area so we opted for sleep over sights but I think by time we got up, we were ahead of the schedule the captain gave anyway. So if you are going to watch while you sail in, plan on being up early and maybe adding a little time to the captain's estimates just in case.

You'll see the same landmarks going out and in as there is just the one way to the NYC docks the cruise ships are at. (RCCL and others leaving out of Bayonne and any leaving from Red Hook in Brooklyn may not. But where DCL docks you will.)

Its such an amazing view coming back in, when its dark and the city is all lit up. We ran out very very early the morning we docked, me being an airhead thought no one else would have this idea just took a blanket and went up in my PJ's. Needless to say I was just a little embarrassed by all the people out there with the same idea. But it was worth it for that amazing view. We went to top deck front, it was chilly but worth every chill!

We are also sailing out of NYC fall of 2017, specifically Oct 21. Never have been to NYC so we will be there 3 days before to take in some of the sights. Thanks to everyone who replied to the OP. It has helped me and DW to know what we will see when sailing out and in.

We're going on our first out of NYC this fall too and really looking forward to it. I am wondering if anyone recalls approx what time Statue of LIberty and Bridge is seen? Curious to know if this will make us late to dinner on the first night and if that lateness is tolerated by the staff?

It is usually around 5. The crew is use to people being late due to that. I would look at the menu on your navigator and be ready to order when you sit down just to keep the flow of the night in step.

Is this one of the Marvel day at sea cruises?

Typically, you sail at 5 so you would get to the Bridge by about 6. If you have early dinner, yes that would make you late. Personally, I would choose either to go MDR for early dinner on time or eat elsewhere if I wanted to stay and watch until you go under the bridge. I wouldn't watch until we pass under the bridge then go to the MDR late but that's just me. I know that arriving late to dinner can throw off the whole service and the first night is already difficult for the servers with having to go through introductions, allergy review, etc. And early dinner is on a tighter time frame than later dinner because they have to get the dining room cleared and reset before late dinner. If the ship is late in sailing or the tides/marine traffic require a slower sail out of the harbor, you could be even later and end up with Quick Serve or Room Service anyway.

We were able to stay on deck to see the Statue of Liberty and still. And it to early dinner on time (less than 5 minutes late). If we would've waited for the bridge, we would've been too late (for my comfort showing up anyway).
