Cruisers I need help.....please

Have any of you who get sea sick on a regular sized boat gone on a cruise and survived? Hubby gets sick watching a merry go round so I am concerned about booking the cruise.

Also, Catagory 10 cabins....good vs. Bad.....the price is right but will we be disappointed?

That is what we cruised on in January, and were very happy with it. We had four people (2 adults, 1 8year old, and a teen female). It is the same size as a Category 8, just no natural light (except for the 6 Secret Porthole Rooms). This did not bother us at all, because we were hardly in the room other than to change clothes or sleep. The room was probably 3 times as large as the one we had 21 years ago on another ship (not exaggerating - it was less than 5 feet wide).
You'll be fine - just have fun!

MY DH got sick on an AIRCRAFT CARRIER when he was there 2 weeks for an assignment with Texas Instruments, but was fine on the Magic. My Mom gets sick watching me rock in the rocking chair but was mostly fine. She had one night where she waited to take her seasickness med until AFTER she began to feel sick - not a good plan.

Advice from seasoned cruisers is to get meds, get the bracelets or get the patch. There is LOTS more motion on small boats than on the Cruise Ship with the stabilizers.

FYI, the Eastern (the one we took) generally has more motion than the Western and the 4 day Wonder is usually very smooth because the ship is moving slower.

Also, be sure to remember that eating something light and moving around will make you feel better if you begin to get queasy.

DH gets sick on small boats, but is OK on DCL.

I get sick on both small boats and DCL. I wear a patch. I would not be able to cruise without a balcony though. I get really queasy in all the interior spaces/rooms of the ship.

We've sailed about 18 cruises -

- mostly large ships but a few moderate sized ones and one river boat. My spouse only had a problem twice - both times was in very choppy seas. But - as CM_Mom commented - modern cruise ships have huge stabilzers like 30' wings stuck into the sides of the ship. These supposedly help the ship reduce some of the rolling motion.

Aside from this - YOUR best defense is to book as close to the CENTER of the ship and lower to water line. Conversely - the worst place for ships motion is probably high at the front of the ship.

also - we have had great results defensively from the accupression wrist bands AND we have used the electric "relief bands". These bands interrupt the nerves just as accupressure is supposed to - and you can dial the power up or down as needed. You can get them online for cheap OR you can buy them from the sharper image for a higher price BUT if you don'e need them then Sharper Image will take a return and refund your money.... OR if you try them and they don't work - sharper image will probably take a return and refund your $.

We do not like the chemical anti-sea sickness remedies. The patch has to be applied well in advanceof sailing to be effective - and it is a chemical - and we do not like medications if not necessary. And if the seasickness bands or relief bands work then you will not need chemicals.

What floors would be best to book on then if we are looking for inside, close to water level for not feeling the boat move?

My husband just rolled his eyes when I said how about a cruise...poor guy. We have had a couple bad vacations this year weather wise and I am not sure he wants another one stomach wise....

Started out as a good vacation year, income tax money well spent in my book, but ended up horrible. So maybe no one should book a cruise at the same time as us....lol!

Just to confuse things-I get really, really motion sick-car, boat, bus, rides, roller skating - you name it.

We had a verandah deck 6 so I could look out at the horizon if I felt ill (also fresh air helped). I took 1/2 bonamine pill in the morning and 1/2 at night - starting the day before we sailed.

You know - I never had a better time. Did not feel the motion, did not get sick and are taking our second cruise in Dec. Don't fret too much about it-that was my worst problem-worrying too much before I left.

The only time I felt mildly sick was in Palo's in 13ft waves our last day. Took another 1/2 pill and felt great the rest of the day-also ate a fabulous brunch that morning!

thanks! I will let my DH know. He is so worried he won't let me book. I would love to have a veranda but don't know if we can afford it. Will have to price it out and see.

I feel your DH's pain! I too can't even watch the merrygoround or even rocking chairs -- forget actually getting on one! Having said that, I had a wonderful time on our June Mexico cruise. I took bonine the first two days and the last day of the cruise, but didn't need it inbetween. My DD took bonine the first day and used the pressure bands the second and last day. We were Deck 8 forward (so high up and forward) and never had a problem in the room. The only time I felt a bit queasy was in the Walt Disney Theater Friday evening. I had taken a bonine earlier, and drank a gingerale in the theater and I was ok.

If you can spring a verandah, I think that really helped. To be able to step outside and have some fresh air was very good for me.

Cindy, I had avoided cruises for years because of my horrible sea sickness problem. I get sea sick THINKING about getting sea sick.... well... a friend assured me that with daily doses of whichever sea sickness medicine you choose (we used bonine).... I'd be fine.

Sure enough... it was fabulous, no sea sickness... just stupity sickness from the results of the PUB CRAWL!!!
