cruise with points

Okay - I have been off the boards for a long time till today. I am trying to plan a cruise for 8/20 - yes 2006!! I have 185 points to use or bank by the end of the month.

What would you do!

I could use the points, well 174 of them, and bank 9, and save 1246.00 on the cruise, so the cruise would cost us 2732 with the 75 fee and transfers, or pay for all of it and the cruise would cost 3977.80, and bank the points for who knows when!!

If i am doing my math right, my savings by using the points is 1246.00, that divided by the 174 points is 7.16, so that is what my points area worth (lets not get into depreciation, etc). Sure I can rent for the $10.00 per point, but it seems like it would be a hassle for 522.00!!!

I more than cover my maintenance, with some change left, so should I just do it and not put more out of pocket, expecially with such a short notice!!!

Personally, I would use the points now and save the cash. Or use part of the cash difference to pay for excursions, tips, etc. that are cash-costs involved with cruising and then whatever I had left over, set aside to pay for next year's member dues (or if I hadn't paid off my loan, I would apply it toward the loan in addition to my normal monthly payments).

If you have no plans to use your points, I would use them for the cruise, then you have some extra spending money for excursions. It might not be the most economical but it works for you, and thats what matters
