Cruise ships banned from Venice

I saw this. What is unclear as that article seems to imply that cruise ships will be docking like 30 minutes away, so won’t there still be the same number of people pouring into the city? The only thing they would appear to fix is that they are not docking in the historic area, which does not address the complaints the article mentioned such as hordes of tourists descending during the day and not spending the night. If people pay to go to Rome from the port that is an hour away they are certainly going to still come to Venice from a port 30 minutes away.

Perhaps they will work on that next. I think their primary concern was the physical damage being caused by having giant cruise ships navigating the canals. That is the biggest threat.

I'm not really sure what they could do about the tourists. Tourists bring a lot of money into the local economy so an outright ban wouldn't work. Trying to control the comings and goings would be just this side of impossible.

I thought I read something that European countries are trying to ban all cruise ships from docking there.

I think not dumping 1000s of people right at the door step will help. If they are docking a bit further away, then people will have to pay to get in either through a shore excursion or self transportation. The city and islands were just never made to support that number of people.
