Cruise resale disappointment

After the ups and downs with this little purchase, all that matters to me is we were able to get this sale to go through with timing that allows me to view the 2012 points as a "bonus." Looks like we will pay pro-rated dues for two weeks, but we still get the value of the points as if we had them all year.

I'm sure it can be deconstructed that we got nothing more than we paid for, I just prefer to view it that we got just that little extra incentive (the 2012 points) even if merely a function of the calendar. VWL add on points can be pretty tough to get, especially when you need to add on to an existing use year, so I'm still feeling very happy today!

While that's true, I guess I've never understood why this is so often dismissed as a "sales tactic." The buyer IS getting a full set of points for a Use Year that has 15 days remaining. :confused3

The Guides throw out the fact that the buyers are getting back dated points without the buyer being told that they are really getting the points that they paid for, nothing extra. To me that is a sales tactic.

I guess that letting the buyer bank points past the banking cut off is a positive but if they didn't, in this case the buyer would have to book and stay now before the points expire in 15 days.

The fact that the DVC rules don't apply to Disney also rubs me the wrong way but that's a different matter.

I agree with both of you. Adding on so close to the end of your UY got you a full set of 2012 points for only 15 days worth of dues. If you had purchased the same add-on 6 months ago, you would have gotten exactly the same number of points but would have paid an additional half year's worth of dues. Granted, you have less time to use those 2012 points now than you would have 6 months ago but that's not usually an issue for most of us. I would rather have the break on the dues!

Also, compare this to where you would be if your add-on had not become available until April 1st. You would have saved 15 days worth of dues and lost a full set of points.

Again, congratulations on getting your points!

Receipt of the current year points only occurs due to the favorable sales terms offered by DVC.

So late in the Use Year, it would be well within DVC's rights to pro-rate the number of points received. They could provide 1/12 of the first UY of points for every month remaining in the year. Or they could simply refuse to include any current year points with only 2 weeks left in the Year.

There is no obligation for DVC to provide those points.

"Back dated" may not be the most accurate representation, but disdainfully referring to it as a "sales tactic" is a bit much IMO.

Congrats! Enjoy your trip!

The points have less value than if you had them earlier but often do have value. To me this is a sales incentive rather than a sales tactic, that you get full points for a % of the time involved.

With respect, we can agree to disagree. As long as skylynx is happy with the purchase that's all that matters. :goodvibes

You do pay some dues on those 2012 points but you timed it well -- you will pay about 15 days worth of dues on those points. Quite the bargain! If you truly owed no dues on those points, your dues would begin on April 1st, the start of your next UY but since you got 2012 points your dues started a few days ago on your purchase date.

Congratulations!

Aren't dues based on a calendar year and NOT use year. OP would owe a pro-rated amount of 2013 dues (about 9 1/2 months worth) and absolutely nothing for 2012 dues.

many posters here who seemingly enjoy being contentious. Sometimes I wonder. Anyway, really glad it work out for you. Enjoy your extra, virtually worthless points:rotfl2:

Awww, we plan to use our "virtually worthless" points to extend our stay in October. :-)

I'm still feeling happy because:

1) we have 25 new points at VWL that had been proving really hard to find in our use year resale (been looking for almost a year, finding no small April use year resales offered at any of the big three resellers)
2) we paid less than we would have after the recent price increase
3) our first VWL contract was a resale, but closed before the March(?)2011 change that restricted some point usage, so we have full use of all our VWL points
4) due to the timing of this sale, we were able to bank and have use of all 25 2012 points though we will pay little or no dues on them
5) on April 1, we'll have 50 points available to use (and that's a really good thing because we're heavy on point use in 2013 and can now extend our October VWL stay as long as there's availability)

Reason enough to make a girl glad on a cold Colorado morning!

Dues are paid on a calendar year basis but are based on when you get your first set of points and, in the case of new construction, when you are able to use the points.

Example: If you buy a contract with a June UY today and get the June 2012 points you pay pro-rated dues for calendar year 2013 starting today. If they are out of June 2012 UY points and your first points are Jun 2013 points, you pay dues starting from June 1st. In other words, with a June UY the dues you pay in calendar year 2013 are for the last 5 months of your Jun 2012 UY and the first 7 months of you Jun 2013 UY. If you don't get the June 2012 points, you pay only 7/12ths of the dues for calendar year 2013.
