First, reading and learning from the boards was the best thing I did. I got lots of great tips and I met some great folks. Hello to DisneyLisa and family!! It was so great spending time with you. I have some great photos on the way. Our Cruise meet was great Thanks Vivig for the treats. Wish I would have seen some of you more often but with the rotations and varying excursions, you just do not run into each other. PeachyK, I never even saw you again!
So here is my report:
The room was awesome more room than I expected liked the split bathroom, shower was roomy, lots of storage space but suitcases do NOT fit under the bed. Our room had the storage locker-like thing and we really liked that. Would have liked a room with the bed toward the porthole and the couch and desk toward the door but it worked out. The beds were amazingly comfortable. The shower was bigger than expected. The hair dryer was bad. We had some problems with sulphur smells the first 2 days but a complaint took care of it. It was rather quiet sometimes heard the baby next door crying and some engine sounds now and then but generally it was peaceful. We all slept very well. We were in 1060 which is deck one midship so there was almost no swaying. A gentle rocking on the bad nights but it helped us sleep. You always get an empty elevator also. Captains stay on deck 1.
The roll on cooler was a great idea but ours did leak a little (maybe it was condensation) on the last day. No problem getting wine onboard.
A must that I have not heard mentioned is to listen to the boat horn when we dock or undock from a port. In Cozumel we pulled up along side a Princess ship and several people were on their verandahs and when they heard the Disney horn, they all applauded.
Unlike most people I thought the food was just mediocre. Palos was superb but Animators and Parrots Cay were very average and Lumieres was a tad better. Of the 3 restaurants, Lumieres was the best. As others have said, Palos is worth it both for dinner and brunch. We did dinner on Sunday night and brunch on Thursday and it worked out well. We originally had PLA rotation but switched the first day to APL and I did like being in Luimieres for the 2 formal nights and Parrots Cay for Pirates Night.
As soon as I boarded I went to the Rocking D Bar where I was able to make reservations for Palos and switch our rotation. You also can switch your seating time. If you switch your rotation, your tip tickets will have the wrong names but you can scratch them out and put the right name on it and put it in the envelope and give it to your servers.
Regarding the tip, we tipped our room steward $40 more than they say because he really did a good job and as others have said, he kept our cooler filled with ice. We tipped our head dinner server $10 more and out Assistant Server $20 more because they both seemed to work equally hard for us. However, I think our head server was only so-so. I saw some servers that really entertained their guests (spinning trays, suggesting additional dish, etc.) But they were prompt with the food, drinks and so on. Tipping at Palos should be on the value of the meal which for us was about a $150 meal. We tipped $25.
It wasnt until the last night that we really started to take advantage of the food. When we couldnt decide between a desert, we ordered all of them (yes 5 or 6 deserts) and both families at our table shared. Order 2 lobster tails on Thursday is a good suggestion.
We were very lucky on dinner table mates. For this I am thankful we switched. They had kids around my kids ages and they were wonderfully nice. The Dad is actually in the Navy and headed out March 23 for a 6 month stint on a ship. It was funny, when I asked if this was their first cruise, he didnt know how to answer. It was their first cruise for FUN. Anyway, they were great folks and we spent the entire day at Castaway Cay with them in addition to dinners and other get togethers on the ship.
We docked late at Castaway Cay due to high winds but we finally were able to dock around 9:30 and get on shore around 10:30 am. Between 9:30 and 10:30 there was a torrential downpour of rain but it stopped before we got off and it never rained again. All shore excursions were cancelled due to the high waves and wind but all snorkeling and swimming in the cove were allowed.
Hairbraiding fills up quickly but on Castaway Cay, they have 5- 8 other gals come in from other islands to braid so if you are patient, you can probably get your hair braided there without an appointment. But you will miss a lot of things to do while you wait.
Food on Castaway Cay was also average. I took some fruit and water to the gal braiding my daughters hair and she was grateful.
The best suggestion I got from this board is room service. This is so awesome and yes the All Hands on Deck is good but order extra crackers and grapes. Order sandwiches before you get off in the Caymans and Cozumel. Hot coffee Friday night is a good idea but all the restaurants are open Saturday morning as is the drink bar on deck 9. The coffee at the drink bar Saturday morning was cold however.
Cayman Island is EXPENSIVE. For lunch we ordered fries, tuna sandwich, clam chowder soup, calamari appetizer, and chicken fingers, 1 beer and 1 soda at Breezes and the bill was $70 US. Plus we had to tip so it was WAY expensive.
Remember to tip your bus driver to and from port, your excursion boat drivers and helpers. I saw a lot of people NOT tipping them and it should be done.
Palos for both dinner and brunch is a must but if you have to chose, I would go with the brunch. For dinner the calamari is superb as are the steaks. For brunch, crab legs are fabulous as was the stolen bread with jam, whip cream and berries. You may be able to sign up for a second Palos dinner on Friday keep checking with them. This is great especially if you have APL because the only good night in Animators is the first night.
Do not sign up for Palos on Thursday as they serve lobster in the dining rotation. Or sign up for a 6:00 dinner at Palos and still hit dinner at the 8:30 seating.
Second seating does not finish up until 10 10:30 pm so if you have small kids, they will probably fall asleep before the end of dinner. We had 8 year olds at our table and on the first night in Animators where the colors change, they were fast asleep before anything exciting happened. It didnt help that both families had a very early morning (getting the kids up at 3:00 am to catch early morning flights).
Disney is somewhat disorganized on the excursions but in Cozumel for the dolphin discovery, Disney did take precedent over other tours or those who signed up directly with the park. I think this is one area Disney could improve. We waited 25 minutes past the arrival time in the sun in Caymans to go on the sting ray excursion.
The disembarkation process is excellent. Definitely take self addressed labels for the luggage tags this saved us lots of time.
If you are Canadian, you need to take your passport and another form of ID because Disney will keep your passport the entire time but to get back on the ship, you will need ID and your KTTW card. I think Disney should adopt some programs other ships have which is to photograph everyone and when they swipe your card, your picture comes up and they can verify you are the right person. This will help out tremendously if you are on the last run but over all it goes fairly smooth.
The stingray excursion in the Caymans was the highlight of out trip. No need to take snorkel gear, the water is crystal clear and the water is only 2-3 feet deep. It was absolutely awesome.
Chakanaab Park in Cozumel was very nice. We did not do an excursion. We got off the boat and grabbed a cab ($10) and took the 10 minute taxi ride on our own. The cost to enter is $12 adults and $6 kids. We hung out at the ocean and around the dolphins but there is lots to do. We didnt stay out late, as we were all cranky by Wednesday and we needed naps.
As for seasickness, I used the patch the first few days and it does work but it has a serious side effect. It causes blurred vision in some people and it did to both me and DisneyLisa who I met on these boards. We both had sever blurred vision and bloodshot eyes and had to take the patch off. Neither of us got seasick the rest of the trip even without the patch. It took 24+ hours for our vision to return to normal. We did have fairly calm seas but there were 2 nights with rocking. On the last night we went to the premiere of Ice Princess in the Buena Vista on deck 5 and the boat was really swaying. I finally had to tell my daughter that we had to leave (before the end) because I was not feeling well. Our cabin was on deck 1 and I loved it. The swaying was almost non-existent on deck 1 midship and I never got sick.
Deck 1 was great for us - very little swaying, easy exit to shore, minimal noise or traffic, and you always can get an empty elevator. Plus we got to see the crew fire drill which was neat. All decks have their advantages but I would definitely take this level again plus we were 2 doors from the elevator so it was quite convenient.
My DD9 did not like the Lab at all. Actually, when we got her to go she had fun but it was tough getting her to go. She liked the Arcade too much. She spent 40% of her time on the ship at the arcade.
My DS14 had the best time of everyone. We rarely saw him but he met LOTS of friends and stayed out way too late every night (2:30 4:00 am were the usual arrival times). One night my husband had to actually go find him. The Stacks are being renovated so they hung out on deck 2 at the conference center but generally they just wandered around the boat.
The pools were generally crowded but we almost always could find a chair. The best days to do the pool are when the ship is in port. The adult pool is always empty and very nice.
The spa is very expensive but if you are into that it is very nice. The one tip I can offer is to make a hair appointment for Monday and Thursday night at 6:00 pm. All I did was have them style it but they did a much better job than I could in the small bathroom and then it looked good for formal pictures. The humidity was very high and so I just enjoyed not having to deal with my hair. It cost $35 plus tip but was worth it. Vanessa was my hairdresser and she is very nice and fun. The 6:00 pm appt allowed me to finish up about 6:25 and head straight down to the show.
The shows are pretty good. My husband wanted to see National Treasure so we skipped Disney Dreams for the movie but my DD8 went with our table mates and enjoyed it. We also missed Hercules the Muse-ical but saw the rest. One night the show was the premiere of The Pacifier which the kids loved. Take a tripod and your camera and you will get great photos.
The pillowcase or t-shirt idea is great for autographs. Just like the board said, we dropped off 2 pillowcases at Guest Services, along with a set of colored Sharpies in a plastic Ziploc with our name and stateroom number and it was delivered back to us on the last day. Each character signed in a different color so it was pretty cool.
Characters are EVERYWHERE. If you are into it, you can get your picture with any character. I held the elevator for Mickey and his assistant took our picture it was great. Lines were pretty short and our cruise was sold out. Disney does a great job at disbursing the people around the ship. It never felt overcrowded except Shutters around 6 pm.
I say buy the photo package and get them all. They do a great job. And this is another area that Disney could improve. Finding your pictures is time consuming so if I had to do it again, I would just buy them as I see them. If you buy 4 8X10 photos you get a free case which I think is worth it. I developed our underwater pictures on board so they would not have to go through another xray scanner and received my choice of ship or character pictures for each roll. They have lots of great photos you can buy the ship at night, the characters with the ship on Castaway Cay, Mickey and Minnie in formal wear, etc. Photos taken the last night never showed up Saturday morning so try to finish your Shutters business Friday night.
The on-board stores are NOT open when you are in any port so dont think you will get shopping done while everyone is on an excursion. Definitely buy the Christmas bulb and the scrapbook paper if you are into scrapbooking. The Mickey gloves are fun especially in photos with Mickey.
The post office in Castaway only takes CASH. It is a real Bahamian post office not a Disney post office.
The first night we received a note that we were given a $50 on-board credit applied to our bill I have no idea why but it was nice. Also, I charged the cruise on my Disney rewards card and was able to apply the rewards to my bill.
We spent WAY more than I expected. I planned on $1,000 but my final bill was $1,800. But we were frivolous and DD8 spent $200 in the arcade. We spent $250 on photos, $150 at Palos (drinks, tip, and fee dinner and brunch), $350 on alcohol (my husband likes to buy rounds), $100 on smoothies other drinks, $200 on Disney souvenirs, $100 on my hair appts, $50 on DD8 hairbraiding and $350 on tips. And this does not count the extra $70 I gave out to our servers as extra tip, $20 in room service tips, $50 in excursion and bus driver tips, $170 food in Cozumel and Caymans, $295 on excursions, $50 in taxi rides in Cozumel and Caymans, $100 in island souvenirs, and $200 in duty-free alcohol. And this does not include the money we spent before hand to buy 2 formals for me, tropical shirts for the family, over the door shoe holder (which I LOVED), medicine for seasickness and tamiflu as prevention of getting the flu on board, a new 29 suitcase (which does NOT fit under the bed), snorkel gear for DD8 and me (DH and DS already had some), and of course the cruise itself!! This was easily a $10,000 vacation.
A great thing we did was get off the ship in Key West and go 2 blocks to the CVS and bought 2 cases of water to put in our cooler which our room server kept on ice from then on.
Another tip, buy a fun color of duct tape and tape it on top of all your suit cases. It makes it real easy to spot and helps the porters out. I put red duct tape on all our cases, and it helped a multitude of times. Even in customs.
Things I am glad I took:
Overdoor shoe holder
Soft sided cooler with wine
Candy for the movies
Husbands tuxedo
Two formals
Extra hangers
Scissors and scotch tape
Nice slacks and blouses for dinne
$1 bills for room service tips
$10 Barnes and Noble cards for counselors (my daughter did not use but my son did do 3 for his counselors.)
2-way radios
Folder for Navigators
Ziplocs (used for sandwiches to take on shore)
Things I wish I took:
My own hairdryer (theirs are miserable)
Hair clip to pull my hair up
Aloe for sunburns
Things I didnt need:
Duct tape
8 pairs of shorts and 8 tops (used 4 shorts and 4 tops)
dryer sheets, laundry detergent, etc
powerstrip
Regarding Bingo, we played the last day only and did not win. But a woman near us won $5,100 on the jackpot bingo. It was fun. For those who loved James, he left Disney, our cruise was his last.
There is so much more to tell. It was an experience of a lifetime and worth every moment and every dollar spent. If you are debating about whether to go or not then GO. You will not regret it.
