Cruise newbie- what should I do first- when to book?

I have gone to WDW lots of times and I feel like I know how to book there and how to get a good deal, etc. We have 3 families who want us to go on a Disney cruise w/ them and I don't know to start. Of course, they want ME to plan it all!
I have a couple of questions: is there a good season and not-so- good season to cruise? Are there any big discounts to look for? (If it is pretty standard pricing, then I won't worry about researching prices just to save $25 or so.) I've never been on a cruise and I'm a little worried that I won't like it, however, I know if we go with friends, the odds are that we will have fun no matter what. BIGGEST QUESTION- how far out should you book a trip? If we are looking at next May, should we book now?
Thank you!!

How Exciting! After you get through the initial research, you'll find planning a cruise is as much fun as planning a trip to WDW!

As far as prices go, there are a few general "rules" that seem to apply to Disney cruises.

In general, the farther out you book, the cheaper the fares. So once you have your dates settled, it's best to go ahead and book. You have to pay a deposit ($250 per person), but that deposit is fully refundable up to 90 days prior to your cruise. So you really have nothing to lose by booking now even if there are some uncertainties. Also, travel agents often have group rates for cruises that are very good rates, but tend to sell out early.

Cruise fares, especially Disney cruise fares, are substantially more expensive during school holidays. Thus if you are planning for May, early May would likely be less expensive since most kids are still in school.

Start by getting a few quotes for the dates and cabin categories you might be interested in, with travel agents and with Disney directly. We've gotten good rates with Dreams Unlimited. Sometimes there are big differences in quotes, other times they are pretty much the same.

Good Luck!

Just did the same thing except with 9 families. It is true, the farther out you book the better the price. Especially if it is a busy time or school is out. Some of the cruise travel agents who specialize in DCL will have some discounts. This is because the buy large lots of rooms, receive a discount, and pass the savings to you. You will have to call around. DCL will not give discounts until you have 8 cabins. They wouldn't give me an amount but said to call. Cruising not for everyone. My wife never wanted to go. However, we are going to be on our third Disney cruise next year.

You will have a great time. Disney does it up good!!
