Cruise Meet Threads - Still Active?

I don't do social media but always liked getting to know my fellow cruisers on the DISboards.

But apparently everyone is on FB, so for the first time ever we aren't doing FEs on this cruise because I don't have a FB account (nor do I want one -- if I could find an emoticon of someone sticking their finger down their throat and gagging I would put it here as that is how I feel about FB!)

And therein was the major issue for me. We've done FE groups that were very active (upwards of hundreds of pages), and some that were less active. Most of those did all the Cruise Meet group "business" directly here on DISboards, reserving FB and other sites for more personal, specific interaction.

Our last two cruises that we did FEs, basically, everything was "come on over to FB, that's where we are". And, as another "I don't do FB" person, I was pretty much cut off from any participation beyond someone coming back to the DISboard group thread and posting "this is what we've got planned, do you want to participate?" Feeling like a second-hand citizen. That was on one of them. The other, no one ever came back here to even let us know what was going on.

I've participated in FE groups both on DISboards as well as another board I frequent. For the same cruise. Each group was separate unto itself and each was successful. I get it that DISboard Cruise Meet groups should be managed on DISboards and any other site, if they want to set up their own FE groups, more power to them. But what was happening was those people who migrated to FB, and other sites, were waiting until someone would set up a Cruise Meet thread here and then posting "We have a group already set up (and posting the link to it)" Pretty much gutting anything anyone on DISboards wanted to do.

Very sad. I don't do social media but always liked getting to know my fellow cruisers on the DISboards. Unfortunately my next cruise has a dead meet. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 2016 Member Cruise out of NYC. I'm soooooo excited to have been able to book at 9am today. Already checked for a Meet but 9/28 not listed yet. Sigh.

I've begun one, and would love to connect with you!

Already have a list of people interested in a local or regional Candy Echange.

See you over there on the Cruise Meet board!

Well instead of letting them coexist together and still have healthy threads, social media was cut out and I think a lot of us predicted that would be the end of active meet threads instead of driving more traffic to the meet threads. It's too bad there wasn't room for everybody.

There is always room for everybody here on the Cruise Meets board. The problem is that when spreadsheets are created and shared publicly, that information can get into the wrong hands and when it did, the complaints came flowing into our admin because it's where the spreadsheets initiated.

Pretty sure they were doing it for your internet safety. Instead of info being sent by PM, or email addresses being shared amongst the group, people were blasting their info on social media, those running the groups were sometimes TAs who then spammed those people or used the info somehow, etc. Since DISBoards has an active life on social media, they aren't against it.

Bumbershoot, you are correct. The spamming complaints were nonstop for us with folks feeling that their private information was being compromised simply because they wanted to participate in Fish Extender activity.

Disagree. Not for anyone's Internet safety, in fact "other places" are far safer, anyone can read anything here and you do not even need to log in. This was about "advertising" clicks, trying to stop people moving elsewhere by blocking it, and it totally backfired, as when people go, they do not come back. In small groups on other social media, you get to know very quickly if someone is not telling the truth, or a TA. Here, there are some, who do not tell the truth, and hide behind moderation.

While you're certainly entitled to your opinion, the changes that were made earlier this year here on the Cruise Meets forum with regards to luring folks over to Facebook had nothing to do with 'advertising clicks' as you've mentioned above. I'm not exactly sure how you've come to that conclusion, but it's inaccurate. There is nothing that backfired, as the complaints from our users who had their private information used and email accounts spammed stopped having these complaints when we put the new rules in place here.

Also, folks lie on Facebook just as they do anywhere else on the internet - they use names that are not their own, they give inaccurate information, they tell tall tales about locations that they've never visited, and they hide their true identity behind their computer screens. The only difference there is that we don't receive the complaints, Facebook does.
